Holy moly !!! That’s not just a family horse it’s a community horse 🐴

Sampson is the name of the biggest horse on record. This Shire horse was born in 1846 in the county of Bedfordshire, England. Sampson weighed in at 3,360 pounds when he was just four years old! Sampson was reported to be over seven feet tall, or 21.25 hands, too. As you can see in the picture below, due to his unbelievable size, Sampson was rightfully renamed “Mammoth.”

Well said & a great reminder!!

I had to repost this. 🙌🩷

“I was scared today.

I was scared to get on, scared to walk out the yard because I had a bad ride the day before. One bad ride, and it made me scared.

I didn’t know why. I’ve had 1000 bad rides. I’ve had 1000 falls. I’ve broken bones and bruised my pride on countless occasions, but today I was scared.

Why? Because confidence is fragile. It takes months and years to build and seconds to lose and yet we are so careless with it.

When we get on a horse, we wear a hat to protect our head. We wear body protectors, gloves, boots...

We pay so much attention to protecting ourselves physically, we forget that our minds are not invincible, and our confidence certainly is not.

Your bank of confidence needs regular deposits, not just from others... but from you. Self confidence is the most valuable currency in life.

When you go to get on, and you hesitate, you falter and you start to ask yourself “can I do this?”, chances are, your account is almost empty.

Every time you laugh and say “oh no, I’m no good” or “so and so is 10x better than me”, you make a withdrawal from that account, and before you know it, your account is empty and you’re scared to get on.

But every time you say “I’m really pleased with how that went” or “I think I rode that really well”, your balance increases.

We need to learn to give ourselves a break, pat ourselves on the back and allow ourselves to feel proud of where we are - after all, most of the time we’ve worked bloody hard to get there!

Recognising your strengths is just as important as recognising your weaknesses. Never allow yourself or anyone else to empty that account.

Confidence is valuable, don’t bankrupt yourself.”

Who matters more? The mare or stallion?

In a 2015 study, 675 foals were divided into 4 categories.
1. Elite dam x Elite sire (EE)
2. Elite dam x Poor sire (EP)
3. Poor dam x Elite sire (PE)
4. Poor dam x Poor sire (PP)
Unsurprisingly, the best offspring came from the Elite dam x Elite sire group. Here’s a twist… the worst offspring did not come from the Poor dam x Poor sire group as one would expect. The worst performers came from the Poor dam x Elite sire group!!

Overall, the lesser performing foals came from the PE and PP groups. The highest performers were in the EE and EP groups.

Can you say ‘girl power?’ Mares have a large impact in the quality of the foal! Keep this in mind for the upcoming breeding season 😉

This poem does not mean grazing at night will totally eliminate laminitis worries.

It means the risk is less at night. The safest time is actually 3am to 10 am but...

“How much weight can a horse carry?

In my experience, a horse can carry an infinite amount.

They can carry the weight of broken hearts, broken homes, and broken bodies. Countless tears sometimes comb their tangled manes. Moments when parents and friends cannot be there to help and hold a person, horses embrace and empower. They carry physical, mental, and emotional handicaps. They carry hopes and dreams; and they will carry the stress from your day when you can't carry it anymore.

They carry graduations, they carry new careers, they carry moves away from everything familiar, they carry marriages, they carry divorces, they carry funerals, they carry babys before they are born, and sometimes they carry the mothers who cannot carry their own baby. They carry mistakes, they carry joy, they carry the good and they carry the bad. They carry drugs and addictions, but they also carry the celebrations.

They will carry you to success when all you have felt is failure. They will carry you, never knowing the weight of your burdens and triumphs.

If you let them, they will carry you through life, and life is hard, life is heavy. But a horse will make you feel weightless under it all.”

When the weather changes rapidly it can cause a multitude of health concerns with our horses. We want to address just a couple things that we are seeing more often right now due to the rapid changes in weather:

• Colic - Horses often don’t adjust as quickly to rapid changes in temperature as they need to. If the temperature suddenly plummets they sometimes are less apt to drink as much water as their body requires, which can lead to impactions and dehydration. Offering your horse a soupy mash, warmed water, and/or adding a little extra salt in their feed can often help keep colic at bay!

•Hoof Abscesses - When the weather switches from wet to dry, wet to dry, wet to dry our horses hooves are more prone to hoof abscesses. Dry hooves soak up dirty water, manure, and urine all contaminated with lots of bacteria. Any openings in the hoof (no matter how tiny) from a crack or bruise or a little puncture from stepping on a rock can allow that nasty bacteria to come in and create a hoof abscess. Cleaning your horse’s hooves regularly and providing a clean dry area for them can greatly decrease the chances of developing hoof abscesses.

If you have any concerns about your horse’s health during these changes in weather we are here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! 916-652-7645 or [email protected]
Stay safe out there… the sunshine will be back soon 😊
