Maui Humane Society was first organized in 1953, and incorporated in 1962. We have been concerned with animal welfare since our inception, and operated a volunteer-run shelter until 1987. At that time we received a Maui County contract to not only handle all field operations for animal management in the community, but also partially fund an animal shelter and adoption center. We seek private donat
ions and grant funding to provide the monies necessary to cover the remaining programs and services our community needs – approximately 60% of our overall operation costs. We are Maui County’s only open admission shelter, handle all animal management, are the only organization offering humane education programs, and have the largest spay-neuter assistance program in the county. Our humane enforcement officers work with and educate pet owners in violation of county codes instead of merely writing citations. We work to help prepare families for safety in times of disaster and have an amazing adoptions/reunions program. Our 4EverPets program provides free food and supplies to those in need. We are committed to providing exemplary service to our community and encourage the creation and growth of programs, services and partnerships that will enable us to better carry out our mission. We are proud of the services and programs we provide to Maui County every day and are diligently working to reduce the number of neglected and unwanted animals through education, outreach, and spay-neuter programs, thereby increasing the number of happy forever homes in our community.

Our shelter pets need towels! 🐾 ❗
We are always in need of towel donations! Towels are used for all our shelter pets at all stages of their time at the shelter. From handling before and after surgery, to snoozing in their kennels, to our Humane Enforcement Officers rescuing animals across the island, these items are crucial to the well being of our pets.

Scrub-a-dog-dog! 🧽 🐶🐱
We'd like to give a huge mahalo to one of our amazing MHS volunteers, Thomas. A few months ago, Thomas volunteered at Maui Seaside Hotel to provide free pet washes for hotel residents who had been displaced by the wildfires. He even helped wash and trim the nails of one of the residents sweet kitties at every wash. Tom created such strong bonds with the hotel staff, the pet owners, and their pets, and we are so grateful for his dedicated to pets and their people.
While these events have concluded, we are so grateful for his dedication to Maui's pets and their 'ohanas, especially after the fires. Mahalo, Thomas!

Yesterday was a big day for our Foster Team, who placed a whopping 17 kittens into foster homes! 👏🏼 This is no small feat, and an accomplishment like this takes all hands on deck - our Foster team members communicating with foster parents, to our Animal Care & Enrichment team members providing a high level of care to all of our pets, and other staff and volunteers keeping foster supplies stocked for the day.
While we want to celebrate this big win for our kittens, the reality is that this kennel area has already filled back up with new kittens awaiting foster homes. We still need your help!🚨

The Marshall Ohana brought home their first foster kittens about 5 weeks ago, and we are happy to report that they are thriving!
“These sweet 8 week old kittens are headed back to MHS on Monday to finish off their final steps toward adoption as we headed to the mainland for a pre-planned trip to see family. We were devastated to let them go and truly wanted to foster fail every single one.
We fell in love with their unique personalities and the loving playful nature they all share
It was not all playtime and kitten cuddles of course. These tough little kitties had to fight off some nasty bugs and they did not love receiving syringes of medication or baths. But they were all extra affectionate after their treatments and enjoyed being showered with extra love and snuggles afterwards. They are such sweet little spirits.
We enjoyed every minute with these sweet babies. The lack of sleep, worry, endless scooping, and endless sanitizing was so worth it. I know you all feel the same way. We’d do it again in a heart beat. And we hope to. But these four, our first fosters, are always going to hold a very special place in our hearts. Hoping with all of our hearts that they find the best forever homes”.💙

I've been waiting at the shelter for nearly a year now with hardly any adoption interest... I have spent some time in foster homes and did great there, but what I really need is a forever home. I’ve been at the shelter for way too long, and I just know that if you take a chance on me, we’ll make the perfect team. Imagine it: you, me, and my trusty tennis ball against the world!

In January this year, Regina was found tied to a telephone pole in Waiehu. She was left there overnight before our Humane Enforcement team got the call to come and rescue her. She was examined by our vet team immediately. They found masses on her toe and belly, and painful and rotten teeth... she was uncomfortable but remained the sweet and loving girl she was throughout her surgery, treatments and recovery.
Her masses were sent out for testing and the results were that they were benign! After a month of recovery, Regina was ready to start her new life as happy and healthy as she could be. In March of 2024, Regina was officially adopted! She was adopted by a loving Ohana in San Diego!
"Here is an update on Regina Sprinkles now named Kalea. She is the sweetest dog, loves all dogs and people and bonded with our granddaughter at the airport. She loves her walks with her newly retired Dad, shopping at Petco for toys and going to the beach parks in San Diego. At our vet’s office, she sat in the chair next to my husband just like a person. She is doing great! Our thanks to Brittany at MHS and everyone who made her adoption possible!"
