The Animal Nutrition Wizard

The Animal Nutrition Wizard I provide a number of services for pet owners, including low-cost food analyses and nutrition consults. rabbits, guinea pigs). from Holly & Hugo.

This page is hosted by The Animal Nutrition Wizard, a certified Pet Nutrition Specialist with over 7 years experience who provides consults, hosts a free podcast providing nutrition education on your pets, and even provides written guides, too! I also provide accessible and evidence-based information to pet owners interested and invested in their pet's nutrition via guides and an educational podca

st. I use my expertise in self-education and investigation, alongside my years of training under a veterinarian, and time spent sifting through hundreds of peer-reviewed published studies, reading textbooks and taking courses to assist my clients with their pet's nutritional needs. The consultations and support I provide are focused on dogs, cats, and small pets (i.e. While much of the nutrition information about dogs can also be applied to us, I am not a human nutritionist. More details on my training below:

I spent six years learning and working under a DVM with a hard focus on nutrition, Dr. Katy Miller; the in-staff vet for a well-known natural, Northwest Pet Supply store. In addition to training under a DVM, I've received certifications in Pet Nutrition through courses from Canine Nutritionist Nina Luu, and DVM Jean Dodds. I've also completed three nutrition specialist courses from DNM Pro, in Raw Food, Pet Nutrition, and Advanced Canine Nutrition, presented by Dogs Naturally founder Dana Scott and created by Dr. Marion Smart, Ph.D. in Nutrition, & DVM with a residency in clinical pathology. Dr. Smart also studied large breed puppy nutrition and soil nutrients at Guelph, and developed the first companion animal nutrition elective at an accredited vet college! I also have a certification in basic Small Pet Nutrition (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, etc.) My next course will be an 8-month educational journey from Cat Lane, CVM. I may make recommendations for specific foods and supplements, however, I am not here to advocate for specific pet food brands. I am not sponsored by any pet company. And I am also not here to bash on any pet food brand. If a diet I've analyzed is shown to be poor quality, it is not an opinion on the brand itself, but rather a determination of the quality of the food based on ingredients, order and calculated amount of ingredients and their metabolizable energy from different macronutrients, as well as the transparency of information from the manufacturer, and safety and quality determined in the processes used to make the food. My goal is to provide coaching on your pet's nutrition, analyze foods, treats, and supplements, as well as walk you through how to make dietary changes safely while providing recommendations for diets based on certain conditions and needs - ultimately giving you the tools to become a 'wizard' on your pet's nutritional health and enhance the lives of pet everywhere. How pet food is made and formulated, and where its ingredients are sourced, affect its digestibility, its quality, reliability, bioavailability, and the impact it has on the microbiome, the pet's immunity and internal organs, and general health. I specialize in ingredient analysis, label reading, supplemental and diet-based solutions, and energy calculations. My pet passions (pun intended) include diabetes, obesity, and urinary tract issues in dogs and cats. These particular diseases are incredibly common, and incredibly preventable - with the right diet, and therefore these problems strike the biggest chord in me. I have spent nearly a decade in this field, performing consultations for pet owners on diet and supplement needs, as well as making recommendations based on current best knowledge, and I wish for every pet owner to be a wizard when it comes to their own pet's health! I'd love to work together, to empower each other with knowledge, feed that inner scientist (and child), and allow our curiosity and passion for our pet's well-being to take us to new heights! We love and cherish our dogs, our cats, and our small furry pets of all kinds with all of our hearts. So it's time we took more control of their health and stop leaving it all in the hands of pet food manufacturers that are willing to sacrifice our furry family member's health for the sake of making a buck. Remember...

Nutrition is magic! Disclaimer: I am not a vet, and I cannot diagnose any conditions, nor recommend medical treatment. My part in your pet's health is for the food and supplements you provide and providing you with the tools to make good choices for your pet's nutritional needs.

Wizard Tip o'the Day!

There is no evidence that raised feeders can help reduce GDV (bloat).

In contrast, there are some studies that strongly suggest they increase the risk**

If your dog doesn't absolutely need a raised feeder due to mobility issues, it's best to have those bowls on the ground :0)

Wizard Tip o'the Day!

Picking out chews can be tough. There are some simple tips and tricks to keep in mind when doing so.
For starters, your dog's chew should be big enough it can't fit completely in their mouth! But it shouldn't be so big that they can't carry it around easily, or that it may cause safety issues (see photo below)

The secret to keeping your pet's teeth white?
Starting their dental routine early - while they're a puppy - and using a multi-pronged approach!
Don't rely solely on chews; brush your dog's teeth with an enzymatic, vet-approved toothpaste at least a few times a week, and consider adding a kelp supplement to their meals! The best chews are free of carbohydrates, and are tough enough to scrape plaque off teeth, without risking chipping or cracking teeth!

`ANNOUNCEMENT TIME ~

Hello everyone!

Going forward, I will be using a Sign-up Sheet for my weekly, live Q&A's to organize all upcoming sessions.

This is a big change because it means you won't see me on Facebook Live anymore (but that's okay, because it means my sessions will be a lot more personalized - and hopefully less buggy!)

I will still be hosting free sessions for pet lovers to ask me all their dog and cat (or small pet) questions in real-time, Tuesdays at 6:00 PM PST - but they will now be through Zoom, for participants who have signed up in advance!

Just click this link to sign up: https://signup.com/go/TqeeWNt
Choose the date you'd like to attend.
Make sure you hit the "Save" button at the top to receive a confirmation email.
And then you'll receive a Zoom Meeting invitation link with a passcode from me!

You do not need to register an account, and neither SignUp.com nor myself shares email addresses with anyone.

If you prefer not to use your email address, please contact me and I can sign you up manually, and sent the Zoom Meeting invitation via FB Messenger.

SignUp.com makes it easy to coordinate school events & classroom activities, fundraisers, snack schedules, potlucks & more!

Did you know more than 50% of our dogs are obese?
And obesity is associated with more wear and tear on joints, bones, the heart, kidneys and the immune system. Controlling and maintaining your pet’s weight is therefore a vital step to ensuring optimal health!
Old pets need more protein, younger pets need more fat and micronutrients, and both young pets and adults need good weight maintenance!
A lean puppy is a healthy puppy

Got an elderly pet?
Read this article for the signs that a joint supplement is overdue!
https://vitalpethealth.co.uk/aiding-mobility-elderly-pets/

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! As best as we can, we should aim to prevent loss of mobility and joint discomfort, rather than to treat it once we notice it's symptoms.

If your dog or cat is 7 years of age or older, or is of a particular breed known for developing premature arthritis, and they aren't already on joint support, start looking for a supplement to help prevent the discomfort that comes with old bones!

Regular and gentle exercise for our elderly pets is *incredibly* important, too!
