Another wave out of a mini mare! This happened because she only has 4 upper incisors vs the usual 6. The lower corner incisors started erupting into the open opposing space from the uppers.

Tiny wolf teeth out of a 6yo mini mare! Tooth on the top in the second picture is the one circled- it was practically a fragment and i’m assuming the whole tooth just never grew in (pretty common)! Sharp points are also visible along the outer edge of the upper molars.
Make sure the young ones are checked for wolf teeth before putting a bit in them and I guarantee it’ll be a lot easier for you 😉

SUPER easy extraction done with a single hand on a geriatric mare I did about a week ago. This tooth was holding on by a single thread (circled in the picture). I reached in to feel around for a typical exam, felt that the tooth was sideways and loose, twisted it and started pulling & POP! It was out. Easiest extraction by far🤣

INCISOR WORK!
Incisor work is one of the most important things to have checked on your horses!! Yes, we’re concerned about getting those sharp points off of the molars as well as making sure all arcades are level, but that is practically pointless if they can’t chew correctly due to a blockage in their incisors! Most horses switch sides of chewing from the left to the right.
This little mini with a wave in his incisors could not chew both ways because his lower right (301, 302, & 303) and upper left (101, 102, & 103) were overlong. This most likely stemmed from his lower left canine being in place of his 403 incisor. Canines are naturally smaller teeth so the upper opposing teeth grew into the space around his canine. Once those teeth grew long enough, it created a gap in his incisors allowing the lowers to erupt upwards filling in the open space.
Chewing like this can also irritate the TMJ which is the joint that controls their mandible. The TMJ also connects to their neck & spine and could lead to overall pain just from incisors not being corrected.
However, MOST horses need incisor work every year! Even if they are straight, overlong incisors can cause just as many problems.
Every horse needs to be checked at least once a year.

Last minute opening for this upcoming Friday (4/21) afternoon. Donkeys included!
I will be adding on a $25 farm call fee for appointments 40+ minutes away from 21657 (Queen Anne, MD) with less than 4 horses. There will also be a $30 cancellation fee applied to all appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time.

Miss Sarabi getting some much needed dental work done today! She had very sharp points, hooks on lower 11’s, ramps on lower 6’s, and an incisor wave due to her upper central incisor shape caused by age. She came out with beautiful molars & straight incisors! She didn’t like to stop with a bit before because of the massive ramps on her lower 6’s but that was all corrected with a bit seat and she should ride wonderfully now!
