Q: Are Broken Teeth Common in Dogs and Cats?

A: Yes, broken teeth are relatively common in both dogs and cats.

Here's what could cause a broken tooth:

🦴Chewing on hard objects such as bones, antlers, rocks, and even toys that are too tough.

🫨Accidental trauma, such as falls, or rough play, can result in broken teeth in pets. This can especially affect outdoor cats who are roaming around and getting into adventure.

🫦Biting on metal. If your pet chews on metal crates, fences, etc., they may easily cause tooth fractures.

🦷Dental disease. Pets with periodontal disease are at higher risk for tooth fractures because their teeth are already weakened.

In honor of the new Twisters movie🌪, we would be remiss to not mention the now-famous BRISKET, the rescue dog that star Glen Powell adopted while filming the much awaited remake.

To quote Glen in Entertainment Weekly: "Sets can be very lonely places. And it's interesting when you see a dog that's just filling you up with love, how it brings a cast together even more. There's something wonderful about animals, about how they can bring our walls down a bit and expedite friendships and things like that. So yeah, Brisket's been amazing. I consider him the best special feature of Twisters."

We couldn't agree more, and we are happy to see more light being shone on rescue dogs, who can be such a special gift. We love to support our local Pinal County Animal Care and Control. 💜

We'll be celebrating Brisket this weekend when we see Twisters! What about you?

In this Arizona heat, it might look like Sphynx cats have the right idea when it comes to staying cool! But before you shave your head (or your pet's hair off! ❌), understand that there are other risks to being hairless.

For example, Sphynx cats are more prone to sunburn and get cold more easily in the A/C. It is best to work with your pet's natural haircoat. For example, we kept this Sphynx baby warm in a blanket at her Revel visit.🥰 When it comes to dogs with double coats, it is rarely recommended to shave their hair off.

Is it safe to walk your dog?

We'll be honest, for the majority of an average Arizona summer day, it is NOT safe to walk your dog. We sympathize that this can be very tough with active dogs, but just look at those temperatures!🥵

Asphalt gets significantly hotter than the already-hot air and can cause damage in as little as 60 seconds!

☀️Some best practices to follow☀️

1️⃣Before going out with your dog, place your hand on the ground. If it is hot to the touch, it is too hot for your dog, and could result in blistering and burns.

2️⃣If possible, walk your dog early in the morning or late at night after the sun has gone down.

3️⃣Be mindful of your individual dog. Larger dogs, senior dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, dark-hair-colored dogs, dogs with chronic conditions, and dogs with double coats have an extra hard time in the heat.

4️⃣Take water with you! Even if it is a cooler part of the day, it is likely still warm in Arizona.

5️⃣Watch for signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. If anything seems off, call us immediately. Early detection and treatment is critical.

PREVENTION is the best accessory💁‍♀️

During season, conditions are optimal for mosquitoes to THRIVE.

Mosquitoes can be highly dangerous for pets because they are the ultimate vectors, most notably for heartworm disease.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes who carry the larvae of a parasitic worm.

Treatment for heartworm is expensive, painful, and not always effective, so PREVENTION is the best option!

💜How to prevent heartworm?💜

1️⃣Administer monthly heartworm preventatives, on a year-round basis.

2️⃣Have your pet tested on an annual basis for heartworm. Preventatives are not 100% effective, so this is important to continue to test.

3️⃣Protect your environment. Do your best to remove standing water in your backyard and use pet-safe mosquito control products as needed.

Here’s a few other tips from us at the Revel practice for having a GREAT pet sitting experience:

1️⃣Plan Ahead. Don’t wait until the last minute. Pet sitters are busy in the summer and around holidays. Try to book at least 1 month in advance (more if possible!).

2️⃣Look for word-of-mouth referrals. Hello, follow this post and see what your fellow ‘best humans ever’ say.

3️⃣Request references. Don’t feel guilty for asking potential pet sitters about their experience level! If they have experience, they will be able to provide references.

4️⃣Check them out. Some pet sitters will have Google reviews or a social media page. We’re not telling you to be a “social media creep,” but a little research never hurt anyone.

5️⃣Have an interview. Meet them ahead of time with your pet to make sure everyone gets along and it is an ideal fit!

How do we do this?

We get creative!

A few ways we accomplish a more relaxed vet visit, include:

☺️Meeting your pet where they are most comfortable. It’s common to see us on the floor because lots of dogs are more comfortable there than on the top of an exam table!

💨Practicing “less is more.” Too many people and hands can feel suffocating and stressful to a pet. We provide space and breathing room.

🥰We use lots of positive reinforcement and, of course, give lots of hugs.💜
