Establish VCPR (veterinarian-client-patient relationship) with our practice while getting your horses floated! This is a great time to update fall vaccinations and introduce us to any new additions to your farm.
The average Arizona horse should receive an oral exam and float/balance yearly, and twice yearly for geriatrics and young horses. A comprehensive dental and oral exam includes sedation, a speculum, bright light source, mirror, and dental probe. We also have digital radiography on all our trucks as well as oral endoscopy.

Here are some fun facts about our ruminant friends:
โจ Cows have a visual field of 330ยฐ almost an all-around view. They can see the colors yellow, green and blue.
๐ฅฉArizona beef farmers & ranchers produce enough beef to feed more than 8 million Americans every year.
โก๏ธThe natural life expectancy of a cow is around 20 years- some get up to 25 years old! The age of a cow can be determined by looking at its teeth.
๐ด Cows donโt need much sleep per day. They only sleep around 30 minutes in deep sleep that is divided in 6-10 short periods.
๐พ In addition to โmooingโ cows use their body language such as the position of their head, limbs and tail (as well as facial expressions!) to communicate.

๐จ๐ด Laminitis in Horses ๐ด๐จ
Laminitis, also known as Heat Founder, is a distressing and potentially life-threatening condition that affects our equine friends. Itโs crucial to be aware of the warning signs and follow proper guidelines to ensure their well-being.
๐ค What is Laminitis?
Laminitis is an inflammation of the laminae, which are the soft tissues connecting the hoof wall to the coffin bone. This inflammation can cause severe pain, lameness, and even rotation of the coffin bone.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) provided guidelines to help prevent and manage laminitis including:
-Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding obesity in horses.
-Gradually introducing new feeds to prevent digestive disturbances.
-Monitoring grazing time, especially in lush pastures.
-Regular exercise and hoof care.
-Immediate veterinary attention if any signs of lameness or discomfort are noticed.
๐ซ Remember, prevention is better than cure!
If you think your horse is experiencing a laminitic episode. Please call us immediately.

Our podiatry trailer is specially designed to safely tilt and trim cattle. It is equipped with a head restraint and palpation gate in the back for herd work as well as processing large groups of cattle on a ranch. We also have a side opening designed for c-sections. It's multipurpose: from hoof care to routine cattle work and surgery.
We have mobile equine stocks to allow for safe restraint of horse for dentistry, reproductive work (such us ultrasound), standing surgery (enucleation, dental surgery), colic work (IV fluid administration, palpation, nasogastric intubation), and other emergency work (retained placenta treatment, lacerations)
Our surgery trailer is a fully equipped surgical suite with gas anesthesia, temperature control, monitoring, and surgical lighting. We routinely perform mini pig spay/neuter and utilize it for c-section in pigs and small ruminants.

๐ Itโs Spring & calving season is here! ๐ฎ
Here are a few things to keep a checklist of so you can do your best to be prepared!
First and foremost, establishing a Veterinary Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) is critical. This ensures we know your herd and understand each animalโs health history in the case of an emergency. Having a wellness exam and/or getting vaccines administered is a great example of this.
Long before calving, consider the health and nutrition of your cows. Proper nutrition lays the ground work for everything else.
Next step in preventative medicine is a vaccination protocol.
As newborn calves arrive, owners are tasked with ensuring the health and vitality of these new additions to the herd. The first step is to maintain a clean and dry calving environments to mitigate the risk of infections.
Do a check of equipment on hand. Essential items include: ear tags, a functioning tagger, colostrum replacers (not supplement), iodine for naval dipping, vaccines, and more.
Having a well-equipped setup can make all the difference in handling various calving scenarios! ๐ฎ
Know when intervention is necessary. If we havenโt seen progress in 30min post calving, time to give us a call.
Post-natal care is equally vital. Ensure that all calves receive colostrum within 4hours of being born for optimal immunity.
Ultimately, the goal of any cow-calf producer isn't just to have live calves but to ensure they thrive in their critical early days.
Working closely with a trusted team of livestock veterinarians, we can guide you to a successful and healthy calving season!
Call to get your herd scheduled & establish VCPR!
