Mrs. Susan Hays brought in this Jasper County sad daddy this morning! 172.4 inches of typical East Mississippi Bones! 😱 She told us they have passed on him the last couple seasons so he could reach his full potential!

Tripp Thompson from, Ellisville, killed his first big buck while hunting with his papaw, Danny Joe Jones, in Enterprise. He has been hunting many times before but has only killed smaller deer. His luck changed the Tuesday before Thanksgiving when this buck walked out. We don’t know who was more excited, him or his papaw but either way, he finally got one that he was more than happy to show off.

As the weather gets cooler and the days become shorter, white-tailed deer begin to transition from their reddish-brown summer coat to a brownish-gray coat. White-tailed deer can be found all over the United States and provided meat and fur for Indigenous peoples. Settlers that arrived in Virginia in the 1600s often referred to the deer as the Virginia deer, which led to their scientific name of Odocoileus virginianus. By the 1900s, due to overhunting and lack of habitat, the population of white-tailed deer declined so far that it was almost considered extinct in our commonwealth! However, after many years of habitat protection and hunting regulations there are more deer now than ever before. This has led to some unwanted consequences as uncontrolled populations of deer can lead to the destruction of crops and gardens, as well as an increase in accidents with cars. During the months of October through December, the breeding season of white-tailed deer takes place, so make sure to stay alert and slow down for deer who may be crossing the street.

A new state record for the longest alligator harvested was broken today!

They harvested this male alligator in the West Central Alligator Hunting Zone. He measured 14 feet and 3 inches long, with a belly girth of 66 inches and tail girth of 46.5 inches. He weighed 802.5 lbs!
