🎆 4th of July Pet Safety Tip #1: Keep Tags Up-to-Date! 🐾

Fireworks can be scary for our furry friends, and they might try to run away. Ensure your pet's ID tags are current with your contact info, so if they get lost, they can be returned to you quickly.

By now, we're sure you've heard about the total solar eclipse! 😎 The 2024 total solar eclipse will happen on Monday, April 8, 2024. A partial eclipse will begin in Wisconsin at 12:52 p.m., according to NASA data. While we will not see a Total Eclipse (sorry Bonnie Tyler), we will have 88-91% coverage beginning at 2:07 p.m. The solar eclipse ends completely in Wisconsin around 3:21 p.m.

During the eclipse, we recommend keeping pets inside so that they are not confused by any commotion or change to their normal routine. Abrupt changes in light can be jarring to pets, and many may react in the same way they do to fireworks or a thunderstorm.

While we hope you will not need us, it's always good to keep our information on hand in case of a pet emergency:

Easter and Mother's Day are two of the most dangerous holidays for cats for one reason: lily poisoning. 💐

As a part of our No Lilies for Kitties educational campaign, we're kicking off the series by sharing which species of lilies are toxic to cats. True lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats and can potentially cause severe kidney failure. Check out the graphic below for examples, and visit the link below to learn more:

The snow has arrived and it looks like a cold snap may be headed our way next week, so we wanted to share this tip in advance, just in case! ❄️

Doggie bathroom breaks can already be brutal in the winter and get even worse when temperatures plummet. 🥶 If you can find straw (not hay) at a local farm or a garden supply store, now would be a good time to snag a bale. A little goes a long way when spread in a small area of your yard. It can preserve your pup’s paws for a few valuable extra minutes during dangerously low temps, then covers any mud in the spring thaw!

Thankful for all of you!

Many of you know Chauncey, our clinic cat. We are so very sad to tell you he has passed. Chauncey was Dr. Wendy Sherer’s cat and she wanted to share with you his story and what he meant to all of us.

Chauncey was my cat for 17 and 1/2 wonderful years. He came to live at RVH because he loved it here. When I would bring him in, he would wander around the clinic going from person to person giving and receiving love. He had too much love to keep it all to myself. I saw how happy he was here and he stayed. Over the years Chauncey has been our clinic cat, many people have loved him and many clients sought him out. I called him our ambassador.

When I met Chauncey, I had just lost one of my cats a week earlier and a friend was fostering a litter so I agreed to go look with no intention of adopting one. I sat there adoring all these kittens but I was resolved I was not ready. Then Chauncey got up on his hind legs and ran across the room chasing sister. That decided it. I’ll take that one, I said. I was still grieving and I admit I felt like I was “replacing” my other cat so it took a little while to bond with him. But anyone who knew Chauncey will tell you his most prominent personality traits were happiness, gentleness, and love. As I came to know my new tiny kitten he slowly helped me to heal. A few months before, I had adopted a young adult feral cat that was terrified of his own shadow. From the moment I brought Chauncey home, around 5 weeks old, barely weaned, he and my feral cat were inseparable. I would say Chauncey helped him to heal from his previous injuries and to gain confidence. He was just a healing presence.

Chauncey was a friend to all, sometimes to his own detriment. He was snatched back from the gaping maw of a dog more than once. He followed us into exam rooms, or wandered into open doors. I would often come back from doing something only to find Chauncey sitting on the bench with a client getting pets. He even climbed into another cat’s carrier and took a ride down the road! The client was obviously alarmed when she realized she had come with one cat and left with two. We learned to guard our lunches from his probing paws and many distracted RVH employees lost the edge of their sandwich if they got distracted. Dr. Jens lost an entire sandwich one (that’s what he gets for leaving that sandwich unguarded). . If we were ever in a panic over “Where’s Chauncey?!” we’d usually find him in a cabinet or a drawer. His face would light up when he met you in the morning and he would enthusiastically follow you around telling you about his morning.

Since he passed, so many people have reached out to express their condolences and I thank you. Losing this very special cat has been hard on all of us. There are many empty spaces around the clinic that remind us he is gone. But there is comfort for me in seeing how much he meant to so many people. He touched so many lives. He was a bright spot and although that light is gone, the gentleness and love this generous soul gave us over the years will stay with us. Always
