Tuesday Tails : Spider Monkeys

At the Zoo, we have three female spider monkeys. Spider monkeys have a prehensile tail that can support their entire body weight. Their tail acts as a fifth limb, helping them climb through their habitats, forage, and eat. Each tail has a print that is unique to them, much like your fingerprint!

When visiting on a warmer day, you can find our spider monkeys in their indoor habitat in the Castle between the Emperor Tamarin family and the Orangutans.

Racine Zoo is profoundly saddened to report the passing of one of our dearest residents, Jabari the Masai Giraffe. Since his arrival at the Racine Zoo in October of 2017, Jabari has been a fan favorite of the Zoo’s summertime visitors, through his participation in Giraffe Feedings, Education chats, and visits to the Land of the Giants.

This past fall, Jabari helped us welcome Shaq to the Zoo, and they became fast friends this winter in their winter holding area.

On Thursday morning, Zoo staff began working with specialist veterinarians and Animal Care Specialists across Wisconsin to care for other zoo residents. While onsite, Jabari suffered a fall in his holding area and was unable to lift himself to standing again.

Jabari’s care staff immediately reached out to other specialists who could assist with helping Jabari to stand, including Racine’s Fire Department, Milwaukee Fire Department’s Rescue 1, as well as Veterinarians who specialize in large animal recovery. More than 50 animal care specialists from across Wisconsin worked into the late evening, and made every effort to return Jabari to standing, but were unsuccessful.

We would like to thank the Milwaukee County Zoo, Racine Fire Department, Milwaukee Fire Department, University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine, Magnolia Springs Vet Clinic and the many other veterinarians and clinics who responded with a quick and heroic effort.

The Racine Zoo will be closed to the public on Friday, January 17th to allow staff to grieve this loss and care for the zoo’s many residents.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Racine Zoo will be closed today, January 17th.

Wishing a 'Bear-y Happy Birthday' to our Andean Bear, Inti 🐻🎂

Inti turns 3 years old today and is active as ever! Inti is an omnivore, which means he enjoys eating fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes, corn, and oranges (more than any other 3 year olds we know)!

Be sure to visit the Zoo and wish Inti a "Happy Birthday" today!

Check out one of our primate keepers, Tina, doing daily training with our Orangutans, Max and Jenny. Max and Jenny have both physical and verbal cues for each command which helps their caregivers check their health, mobility, and build and strengthen their relationships.

Training is a very important tool for many reasons. Training helps build positive relationships between the keepers and animals, provides enrichment, improves animal welfare, and most importantly helps our zoo staff monitor the animal’s health.

All training at the Racine Zoo is voluntary and positively reinforced.

Tuesday Tails: Wallaroos and Kangaroos 🦘

For the first ever Tuesday Tails, we have our Grey and Red Kangaroos, and our Common Wallaroos. These animals use their strong tails to act as a fifth leg. Their tails help with balance, energy conservation, propulsion, and jumping.

At the Racine Zoo, you can find our troop in Walkabout Creek!

Happy 19th birthday to our Fossa, Kirindy! 🎂

Fossas are the largest carnivore and top predator in Madagascar. These animals are active at night, but also during the day. Often, you can find Kirindy climbing through his branches, or taking a nap in his wobble bowl.

Come see Kirindy today from 10-4 and wish him a "Happy Birthday"

Pic credits to one of Kirindy's caretakers, Sophie
