Check out one of our primate keepers, Tina, doing daily training with our Orangutans, Max and Jenny. Max and Jenny have both physical and verbal cues for each command which helps their caregivers check their health, mobility, and build and strengthen their relationships.
Training is a very important tool for many reasons. Training helps build positive relationships between the keepers and animals, provides enrichment, improves animal welfare, and most importantly helps our zoo staff monitor the animal’s health.
All training at the Racine Zoo is voluntary and positively reinforced.
Timu, the Eastern Black Rhino, is one amazing artist!🦏🎨
Timu works with her keeper, Tim, to create the perfect piece of artwork. Timu is given the command "paint" and a whistle. She will then use her prehensile lip as if it were a paint brush to pick up the paint and apply it to the canvas.
Note: This is an optional activity for Timu, if she does not want to participate, she does not have to. She is positively reinforced and rewarded the entire time.

#GivingZOOday is almost here!
The Racine Zoo offers specialized enrichment specific to each animal we have at the zoo. Enrichment is important for an animal's mental and physical well-being, while allowing the animal to exhibit their natural behaviors, like foraging. Our Andean Bear, Inti, is very food motivated, which results in most of his enrichment being food oriented. For a donation of $50, it will feed our Andean Bear, Inti, for one week!

At the Racine Zoo, we strive to give the best care possible to our animals. In addition to specialized veterinary care, our animals need to eat! Our keepers craft specific diets for each and every animal at the zoo to keep them healthy and strong. For a donation of $25, it will feed our Hartmann's Mountain Zebras, like Obi, for three days!
