Chaney Family Farm grew by 6 🐱 today! Our sweet Malificent birthed 6 perfect kittens! 2 black just like her and 4 grey tabbies. She is a fantastic mama already. All babies are latching and eating after some help. Thanks to my mom, Dodie Akers keeping watch for hours to make sure she was doing ok and one of our neighbors, Angie, for coming over to help when I was at the kids sporting events watching the camera from afar and she birthed the last 3!

Tis the season! 🐣 season! While we are not planning on adding any chicks to our farm this year (sweet Hunter, our chick whisperer has been asking to hatch some in the incubator) our neighbor reached out about some so of course we jumped right on it! Checkout this beautiful clutch we just put in the incubator for them. T minus 21 days!

We adopted some barn cats from a lady who was moving and couldn’t take them with her a couple weeks back. Well, Surprise to us we found that Maleficent (the black cat) is pregnant! Fast forward a week and we now see Sarafina is also pregnant! Yikes! We are making sure they are getting all the nutritious food, warm, safe place to grow their babies. Maleficent appears to be close to delivery as her mammary glands are swollen and we can feel the babies moving. We have moved her into the Chaney Family Farm Birthing Suit in the garage where her and her kittens will be safe from the elements and many predators we have in the woods in the backyard. Sarafina isn’t quite as close to delivery. Chloe is beyond obsessed with the cats and is having a hard time leaving them alone.

This sweet pigeon flew into the kitchen window today as I was doing the dishes after the kids lunch. It sat in the tall grass, stunned. A bit later I went out to mow the lawn and it had little to no energy to walk away. It was weak, possibly injured. I saw it had two bands on its legs. This definitely was not a wild bird, but someone’s pet. It let me pick it up 💙. Being the chicken farmer I am, I immediately brought it inside to a quiet, calm area with some electrolyte water, cracked corn and bird food. It has a prominent breastbone, p**p indicating it’s stressed, and sick and appears so weak and hungry. The kids and I settled the bird into a quiet cage with food and water. Quick google search gave me the local pigeon chapter of Seattle (the ID band provided the organization, club and bird serial number). After a couple phone calls we found it’s owner who lives in West Seattle. Him and his racing pigeons had a race down in Battle Ground this last weekend and this poor pigeon got off track and got lost. The owner said it seems as if his pigeon found the right home to get lost and injured at. He will remain in our care overnight with some rest, hydration and food and will be returned home tomorrow. 🐦‍⬛🩶

Our rosemary plant exploded this last year and was taking over the garden bed. I trimmed some of the best looking branches off and dried them! Man it is making my house smell A-MAZING! Thinking of bagging up some into a couple ounces for you all! Would anyone be interested? It would go great in those Italian stuffed zucchini boats, sprinkled on top of your grilled tomatoes, even on top of your farm fresh eggs in the morning! How about adding it to a homemade pesto with this summers basil?? YUM!

We cooked up one of our homegrown chickens, spatchcock style, and holy moly! It was delicious!!! So juicy, tender and full of flavor. The skin was crisped to perfection! This breed (which was either Ginger or Big Red) is known for the juicy and BIG thighs. The breast on it didn’t disappoint either!

Happy 247th Independence Day to the USA 🇺🇸 from our little family farm! We spent this morning of freedom processing 38 meat birds. The rest of the day will be spent with family, fresh food, drinks, fireworks and the sound of our children playing and laughing. We are incredibly thankful for those who have and continue to fight for our freedom. God Bless the USA! ❤️🤍💙

We got our next batch of broiler chickens this morning from McMurray Hatchery! 15 wee little Jumbo Cornish X. One was barely hanging on with significant signs of wry neck but being the nurse I am, I started immediate vitamins with selenium, put her on some heat and giving drops of water. She has already improved some! Videos and pics in comments!

Talk about a beautiful sunset! 🌅 It was a great day on the farm! Got some more starts 🌱 hardened off and planted in the garden beds, the 4 biggest of the baby chicks 🐥 just went out into the coop tonight to be joined with the older flock. A new shipment of meat birds are due to arrive any day now too. We just love this time of year!

Decided to try something new for the chickens! Growing our own organic barley as a special treat for them! Soaked the seeds overnight, place them in a well draining container, water twice and day and a week later they have beautiful barley to snack on! 🌱 🐓

One of the greatest packages to come from the post office! These 27 babies arrived this morning all the way from McMurray Hatchery in Iowa. These are the chickens we will raise for meat alongside our neighbors Elaine and Dave.

It’s been a day of crazy weather here at the farm. It ❄️ earlier this morning, ☀️ early afternoon, and Hunter and I just got caught in a 🌧️ while filling our starter cells with dirt. Hunter said this calls for some hot cocoa! You got it buddy! I may be jumping the gun on the starts but according to the almanac planting guide (by zip code, which is awesome and pretty helpful!) today is the day! We will give it a shot! 🌱 🍓🥦🍆🫑🌶️🥒

Hunter has always been a chick magnet 😏. This little flock sure adores him like crazy. They hear his voice when he goes to tuck them in at night and they come running out from under their heater to greet him. He has the most gentle hands while caring for them! When we had Meryl
Cheep, who was sick, he would take notes of the care interventions we did on her and was so hands on with her care. He is just simply an amazing farm hand. 🥹❤️

Tending to the farm in the winter is by far my least favorite. It’s cold, dark, wet, slippery, very messy and I feel like there is so much more “tending” to the animals needs because of the freezing weather! Making sure the chickens little feet along with Eggs Benedict and Cluck Norris’ combs don’t get frost bite, turning on the barn cats heated bed, and thawing multiple frozen waters. This morning Boone was barking up a storm! I went to the front porch to see him standing on top of the 2” ice that covered the water in their trough. He was not a happy camper so as the sun was rising I was stomping ice and chucking all the pieces. Boone loves the cold and stays warm by doing his “zooms!” so I hardly have to worry about him *peep the pic in this post of his warm body leaving an imprint on the frosted ground this morning*
The kids tolerate the chores as much as they can. They explore and give a lot of treats to the animals. This morning though, Chloe insisted her hand should be warmed under my jacket as we walked to give the goats a couple flakes of hay. Our reward is to come inside to have some hot cocoa and sit by the fire snuggled up together. 🌤️❄️☕️

Meryl Cheep update: after 3 days of holding food and giving minimal water/electrolytes/protein, a lot of crop massages and Monistat her crop emptied to where it was almost empty so I fed her a small amount of soaked chicken food. Well her crop filled up and stayed filled. Back to square one again. Another 1.5 days of nothing to eat and it remained full. I knew one form of treatment was to flush water down her throat to fill her crop a bit more and massage it then flip her upside down to have her vomit the contents out (chickens don’t have a gag), but there is a huge risk of them aspirating and it causing pneumonia. Well, I am out of ideas so I prepped her for turning her upside down. Boy was that successful!! Meryl had been ingesting chicken feathers for who knows how long! I’m hoping that will be the fix of her issues! She sounds congested and was sneezing so I started antibiotic treatment immediately for her hoping to prevent that from being the next issue for our sweet Meryl Cheep. After a week in a box, she hasn’t laid a single egg. We think she is a free loader (hen that doesn’t lay eggs and just hangs out eating all day)! Wish us luck!
