Humidity update! Around 4pm on Friday I powered up an auxiliary dehumidifier in the farm. It went right to work!!! On Tuesday 9/26 the farm used 295kwh with the Avg outside temperature being 69 degrees. Average humidity in the farm was 73%. One week later with the dehumidifier running since Friday…. The farm used 220kwh (25% reduction in energy consumption) with the average outside temperature being 67 degrees. Humidity in the farm dropped to an average of 68.1%!
Plants are much glossier and crispy too!
This is an enormous improvement but I’m still working on why the existing HVAC system is on the struggle bus.

Stay tuned for a humidity update!! Right now the farm’s HVAC system can’t get anywhere close to a 70% humidity average. Got a dehumidifier coming tomorrow. Hope I can fix the issue! 🤞🏼 Would love to see those numbers not jump all over and be more consistent. Trying to not let my chefs down!

Disease ID! Unfortunately I am seeing quite a bit of powdery mildew in the farm. Started with the kales and now is moving onto the mustards. You can see the fuzzy white growth on the leaves. In the pics there is one healthy leaf amongst the infected ones. The two small leaves with burnt edges are lettuce leaves. What can cause all this? High humidity levels. The farm is set to remain at 70% which is a good number to grow many different crops. Unfortunately the HVAC system just can’t keep up. Last week the farm humidity average was above 74%. Luckily all of the crops are not affected. Hopefully it’ll get sorted out!

Grow your own! The germination rate exceeded my expectations and I’ve got too many started plugs. The front plants are spicy bush basil. Grows 8-14” with small 1” leaves. Great for indoor containers. Sweet flavor and fantastic garnishment. The back plants are lemon basil. Great for pasta dishes! Message me for details on pick up or possible delivery. 1 for $3 or 2 for $5. Thanks!

Plant ID time! One of my favorite series of classes was Plant ID. Most of the time the classes were held by taking a walk as a group around Auburns campus. Nothing like looking at a 15’ tall pineapple guava in late summer while hearing the band practice in the background. The majority of the plants we learned were ornamentals and native plants. Rarely did we hit on the edibles. So I find myself having to learn even more plants 20 some odd years later.
Anyway! Can anyone ID this new plant that is coming soon to B3 Roots? Shoutout to for the suggestion to grow this one.

Leaves of three let it be! Almost walked right into this poison ivy patch not realizing that’s what it was! Pretty sure those are this biggest leaves I’ve ever seen on a vine. Growing up I was highly allergic to poison ivy and would have to get shots to combat the rash but have luckily grown out of that reaction. Still hate the plant though. Don’t worry, it’s not part of this weeks greens mix.
