Dominance and social hierarchies are well-documented in the animal world
this is an indisputable fact - if you took Biology in high school - you learned about the animal kingdom... you learned about dominance hierarchies and how critical they are to the stability and longevity of ANY group of animals... humans included... dogs are no different
Not sure how or when we got so far away from basic biology
But in my experience, the closer we get to living in alignment with a dog's primal instincts, the better behaved they are and the more deferent to humans they become
behavior issues are just a symptom of the deeper rooted issue - a systemic gap in our foundation and relationship
An example of humans canines cohabitating without consideration for nature vs nurture
Although i'm not a trainer who really puts a lot of weight on genetics (since I've seen they aren't nearly as significant as the human/nuture factor), we need to get back to allowing NATURE to drive the discussion of how we live with primal animals
Then we need to adjust what NURTURE looks like because its definitely NOT all positive, gentle, and soft all the time
Because our dogs understand "dominance" even if we don't

Too little pressure will amp a dog up more
Too much pressure can result in a dog redirecting on the human (which also needs to be corrected)
Using food in all of this will just keep your dog amped up and stuck in ON because their food drive is constantly being stimulated... not building a relationship in the SLIGHTEST, just building food motivation through deprivation/starvation (which dogs can't ignore - its instinct for them to seek to satisfy hunger as a priority - a s**t way to modify behavior IMO)

There's a reason there is 1 way to train all dogs

No one can regulate your dog's nervous system but you, in your home.
It doesn't matter if your dog trainer can do it...
But don't let them trick you into thinking it's all that hard... in fact it's easy
Crate your dog overnight + 6-8 hours during the day
Follow the Leader + Forced Follow walk 60-90min daily
Permission for resources and at thresholds
Enhanced Nutrition
Nail trims and bathing
These things alone are all it takes to start to see a major difference
You don't even need tools to really get this (although they make it WAY easier to integrate which is why we use them)
That said I see a ton of trainers doing this part and then heading to home depot in week 2 and that breaks my heart 💔😭
Because so many things have to happen between regulating the dogs nervous system and taking them out into the world so they feel more calm and confident about it When you do...
2 weeks is way too long for nervous system regulation.
And 2 weeks is not enough to start focusing on advanced socialization or advanced offleash work either...
that literally undoes the regulated nervous system almost immediately... trying to rush results to impress clients while doing serious damage to dogs and just extending the timeline for healing...
When you want to reset your Foundations the right way
1. Do it yourself
2. Do it at home
3. Do it using a proven program
4. Don't rush it
I'd say it's semantics.. but it's really not
these don't exactly mean the same thing for humans and dogs
particularly when it comes to how being a "pack animal" impacts how we approach activities like "socialization"
Ex. humans socialize by growing their community, interacting with strangers and building new social bonds...
Dogs dont. They naturally stick to the company of their pack (or family) and do not interact with stranger dogs/animals, as those represent threats to their safety or resources...
they don't naturally have friends or want to make them...
So YES its IMPERATIVE that you understand more about what being a pack animal means and how to live like one, if you want to live with one

Secondarily, how you handle Fireworks with your nervous dog or service dog who hates them MATTERS
Show your dog that it's not a big deal by making sure you don't act like it's a big deal
You can take small precautions to set them up for success while also SHOWING them that it's not something for them to panic over
By staying in-control and leading them instead of coddling and "comforting" them (which only reinforces their fear and anxiety - like validation)
and if your dog isn't crate trained and doesn't know a downstay - we can change that together ;)
