I don't know a single dog that listens just because they want to make their human happy

And every dog I've ever worked with started improving as soon as humans embraced their role as a pack leader fully

Because dogs is submissive by nature

And you are the Alpha of their world, by nature ✨️

When you stop fu***ng around with cutesy dog trainers who don't want to teach you how to control your dog properly and they want to make it feel good with

➡️ forcefree training and giving dog's the ability to "opt out" (never actually addressing the problem and having to avoid triggers for the rest of your life)

➡️ Positive reinforcement and throwing treats at problems and trying to distract dogs (also rewarding them for s**tty behavior and mindset)

➡️ Balanced training - because it's all about how you communicate and obedience right?! 🙄😮‍💨 (wrong)

➡️ soft pack-style training- your dog just needs yes-work, leashwork, place training, time around balanced dogs, 10 Day Trains, and YOU just need to be patient - give it 1-2 years to "work" (🤮)

➡️ handfeeding (the single most disruptive and damaging thing for your dog's nervous system next to not getting enough sleep)

Literally all of this JUST because these trainers don't like to be in control and THEY are weak emotionally

Remember, you're only as strong as your dog trainer is weak ⚠️

And you won't make progress if you're doing it wrong

Every mistake you make sets you back

So make sure you're dog trainer isn't setting you up for failure by telling you what they *WISH* was true about dog psychology, behavior, and training

Because you aren't paying for wishful thinking

You're paying for the truth about Canine Behavior so you can get your dog under control and live a happy, comfortable life with them without micromanaging every second of their lives and being on alert all the time

And the truth is your dog thinks you're weak.

Honestly yelling at your dog is just *not* that big of a deal

c-ptsd recovery is deep

yelling at your dog isn't

But I will say this 👇

If youre yelling at your dog to stop difficult behavior

You're yelling for NO reason

We can use tools to correct & punish dogs without losing our tempers 🥰✨️🙌

I'm going to be 35 this year...

and I often get asked by younger women in their late 20s and early 30s

I'm Janna...

you may know me as a Dog Behaviorist, Trainer, and Dog Mom in Raleigh NC

But I'm also...

Super f**ked up.

I have a super. f**ked. up. story.

And despite years of talk therapy, SSRIs, numbing my trauma with substances and distractions, and trying to escape my past between the ages of 13-33...

I was still a deep victim of my deeply rooted complex trauma. Up until about 1.5 years ago when my entire life changed... which I'll get into later ✨️

For a long time, I was talking about the story and treating symptoms of depression, adhd, cptsd, and coping with POTS disorder... meanwhile, i wasn't feeling better... because I wasn't sitting with my suffering long enough and listening

I wasn't listening to her hurt and I was neglecting her pain

But recently... this past month, I sat down with my suffering and listened

I sat with my suffering long enough to learn her name was shame.

And I'm ready to talk about what she has to say.

I saw a popular trainer stitch the account for an extremely reactive aussie recommending leash work

And my eyes almost got stuck in the back of my head for how hard I rolled them 🙄😮‍💨

The advice came from a rewards-based pack-style trainer whose methods literally haven't worked for any of my clients yet

So I'm not being a dick, I'm genuinely concerned for owners who think these things will help get control or help a dog feel better

Leashwork and yes-work is cute and its sensitive and I fully expect the owner to waste their time for many more moons before they get their dog's behavior under control 🌙🌙🌙

Because the trainer giving this advice takes about 10months to 2 years to rehabilitate behavior and they are pretty open about the fact that you can never "stop doing the work"

So they are just teaching management techniques.

And whether that's the owners fault for playing into this or the dog trainer's fault for selling to vulnerable people in a way that profits her long term while owners suffer at home... it's hard to say anymore

How bad does an owner really want to stop the behavior if they keep taking advice from feel-good trainers who openly talk s**t about effective corrections?

Maybe they don't... maybe they enjoy suffering and training everyday

I know when I was struggling with my dogs behavior though and I was finally at my breaking point?

I couldn't wait 10months or 2 years for improvement

Owners don't have that kind of time to wait for progress

But if you could do it all over again, and you could know you were doing it the right way...

Giving your Dog R.E.S.T.™️ is a proven process for rehabilitating difficult dogs and laying the perfect rock solid foundation for service dogs However, more and more trainers are posting about nervous system regulation as though that's all that matters Don't be confused. Regulating a canine nervous system is a step in the process... it takes about a week, and then you have to build on that from there I hate when I see trainers advertising 2 week board and trains for reactive dogs Talking about how they are going to lay you a foundation... Sorry but... that's not how it works. No one can regulate your dog's nervous system but you, in your home. It doesn't matter if your dog trainer can do it... But don't let them trick you into thinking it's all that hard... in fact it's easy Crate your dog overnight + 6-8 hours during the day Follow the Leader + Forced Follow walk 60-90min daily Permission for resources and at thresholds Enhanced Nutrition Nail trims and bathing These things alone are all it takes to start to see a major difference You don't even need tools to really get this (although they make it WAY easier to integrate which is why we use them) That said I see a ton of trainers doing this part and then heading to home depot in week 2 and that breaks my heart 💔😭 Because so many things have to happen between regulating the dogs nervous system and taking them out into the world so they feel more calm and confident about it When you do... 2 weeks is way too long for nervous system regulation. And 2 weeks is not enough to start focusing on advanced socialization or advanced offleash work either... that literally undoes the regulated nervous system almost immediately... trying to rush results to impress clients while doing serious damage to dogs and just extending the timeline for healing... When you want to reset your Foundations the right way 1. Do it yourself 2. Do it at home 3. Do it using a proven program 4. Don't rush i
