I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

Meet Chapter One’s 5 O’Clock Charlie AKA Charlie!

Charlie is a wonderful guy and solid citizen on the ground. Under saddle he can be a quirky guy who challenges our students to be very clear with their aids while remaining soft.

Because of this Charlie participates in beginner lessons on the lunge line and in the round pen and is our step up horse for students working on clear aids in the large arena. He likes doing courses and we plan to keep him doing the 2’ and under job to keep him comfortable in our program for many years to come.

Name: Charlie

Show Name: 5 O’Clock Charlie

Nickname: Chuckles

Age: 10

Breed: Quarter Horse

Color: Chestnut

Height: 14.3 ish hh

Likes: most horse treats, sweet apples, carrots, hasn’t turned his nose up at anything yet.

Dislikes: none that we have found yet

Dressage Solutions: To keep your horse straight ...

Imagine you are riding him on a balance beam. You need to keep him between your leg, seat and hand to keep him centered on the beam.

Training pyramid- you can’t rush training. Every horse learns at their own pace, take the time to understand your horse and lay a proper foundation.

Building a foundation in a horses training is the start to its successes. There are a lot of key components that often get overlooked simply because we as humans are looking for that “finished product” at the snap of a finger.

I found this pyramid years ago and have implemented it into every horse that has come across my path. It has help profoundly and has proved itself in my program. The only thing I’d change is the word collection; I prefer the to replace that with frame. As the word collection to too many means “nose to chest” and that simply not what ANY discipline should be striving for.

Using this pyramid and holding true to it also helps in aiding proper biomechanics of the horse while you’re training and building them up mentally and physically.

My goal is to build a horse that’ll last for many years, not one that’ll be mentally or physically absent in the first few years of its life.

9 Facts About Perfectionism: A mindset that must be unlearned or will ultimately bring your riding down 🧠

1. Every rider makes mistakes, even the best of the best.
It’s an unavoidable, universal experience and all a part of the sport.

2. Mistakes are learning opportunities.
You can grow from them and become better because of them.

3. Hyper-focusing on mistakes helps them happen.
They both become a self-fulfilling prophecy and take your focus away from your ride.

4. Mistakes mean you’re on the right track.
You can’t improve, learn, overcome challenges, and level up without them.

5. It’s not what happened but how you move forward from it that matters the most.
Moving on from the mistake matters more than the mistake itself.

6. Mistakes are temporary.
Work to fix and put them in the past instead of dwelling and allowing them to stick around.

7. Mistakes don’t define you.
You may have had a bad ride, but that doesn’t mean you’re a bad rider.

8. Social media only shows highlights.
Everyone is struggling whether they post about it or not.

9. Perfect doesn’t exist.
It’s impossible to meet unattainable expectations.

A perfectionist mindset and a lack of an ability to accept mistakes will do much more harm than good for an athlete’s mental performance. Mistakes are a normal part of sport and life. Everyone makes mistakes no matter how talented of an athlete they may be. Since perfect doesn’t exist, holding yourself to an unrealistic standard will only set you up for disappointment every ride. Instead, give yourself permission to make mistakes, using them to your advantage by viewing them as valuable feedback and learning opportunities. Refer to this post whenever you begin to feel hard on yourself, and remember that you are not alone! 🏇🏽💭✨

Don’t underestimate the importance of your horse’s dental care! Most of our horses had the day off yesterday so that they could see the dentist! Those who didn’t see the dentist yesterday will see her in November.
