Bea's Bettas moved!

Two weeks ago we packed up our home in Austin and took 3 dogs, 2 goldfish, and 6 bettas on a 3 day journey to North Carolina. While we are in temporary housing there will be no breeding, but I have alresdy started cycling a breeding tub for next month.

Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly and we can get these pretty bettas paired for the next generation!

In September, I had a micro spawn with Mango and his daughter Strawberry. I removed Mango as soon as the spawning process was done because he was clearly tired, and they ended up being his last spawn.

I kept 2 of the 6 fry and absolutely love how they turned out! They both have a bright yellow base and a white mask on top. The female in particular has nice solitary dark scales like Mango had, while the male is a bit more grizzle like then I would have hoped for. I also like the long white rays on both of their tails and hope that they will even out over the next generation.

I have a few spawns planned out with them over the summer, both together and with a pair of wildtype spade tails. I am hoping that with each linebreeding, the traits I am after will continue to grow stronger!

The smoothie spawns are a month old and growing! I have 20 fry combined in a single tank from both sets of parents.

The colors showing at this age are phenomenal, lots of yellow, copper, and white bettas. It's really gratifying seeing this generation starting to show the traits I am breeding for at a month old when in the past I wouldn't see colors until 3+ months.

These guys are spicy, I am already thinking of jarring a few for fighting. They are also already transitioning to frozen foods which is making my life easier. 😅

I can't wait to see these guys in another months time!

We have eggs from Coconut and Strawberry, AND Lychee and Papaya!

My first pair, Coconut and Strawberry weren't quite figuring it out, so I tossed a second pair into an outside breeding tub as insurance.

Both spawns ended up successful!

Coconut is from Dumbo x Mango - https://www.beasbettas.com/my-spawns/YK03b

Strawberry, Lychee, and Papaya are from Yellow Fancy x Mango - https://www.beasbettas.com/my-spawns/YK3

Edit: he has been adopted!

Unicorn the White Dumbo Halfmoon Betta is looking for a tank to live out his old age in! He is possibly 1.5 - 2 years old, and should live another 1-3 years with proper care.

He was surrendered to me 2 weeks ago after his previous owner was unable to resolve his fin rot and swim bladder issues. He went through 2 rounds of medication with me and is finally doing really well. His fins are starting to regrow, he is swimming great, and all of his energy is back!

I call him Unicorn because his dorsal fin was clamped so long that it merged together, creating a "horn".

He would do best in a shallow tank (under 12 inches tall) that is heated and cycled. He has NOT been tested with shrimp, but I can upon request.

Pick up in North Austin/pflugerville. He is free, but I will gladly accept donations of medication so I can continue to help fish who are surrendered to me.

Last week I made the difficult decision to help my boy, Mango, peacefully swim across the rainbow bridge. He has been my pride and joy, and most everyone who's been to my home to get a fish has had him shoved in their face lol. I've been crying a lot over the past few days, and wanted to do an appreciation post for this wonderful betta.

Mango's father was from my very first spawn. I paired him with a lovely rose gold female in his personal tank - a heavily planted 20 gallon. I never saw fry but fed the tank for the first few weeks, but stopped after it seemed that the spawn failed. A month later I was cleaning out the tank when I found 3 little fry! I moved them to a tank with some dumbo fry and eventually lovely Mango developed.

Mango is exactly the betta I set out to create 3 years ago. I wanted a strong yellow base with blue and white over top, with minimal/no black spots. The full white mask was a bonus. Over his two and a half years with me he never marbled to blue or black.

Mango produced 6 healthy and amazing spawns for me. He was the most gentle partner with his ladies, never hurting them or tearing fins. His fry all are beautiful and with wonderful finnage and form. If you've been to a fish store in Austin, you've probably seen his fry!

Mango gave me one last spawn before he left me. They are 2 months old and are already turning into little Mangos. While I am incredibly sad that he is gone, I am so thankful he swam into my fish room and gave me so many fry. I look forward to this spring where the next generation will begin.
