Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

*thank you to whoever wrote this! Not my words, but certainly a shared sentiment!

🎉🎉This weeks is Caroline!

Caroline is in 4th (4️⃣) grade, her favorite color is teal (🩵), and her favorite horse is Bobby (🐴). Outside of her passion for riding, Caroline swims (🏊🏼‍♀️) for the Raleigh Swimming Association… she rocks free style and back strokes. She loves animals (🐰) and making art (🎨); Caroline also has a twin brother named Holden (👫🏼). She loves to bake (🧁) and cook (👩🏼‍🍳)…she loves sushi (🍣) and ramen (🍜), and has been to Colorado (🏔️) 3 times to ski (⛷️)!

Caroline works extra hard during lessons and can always be seen with a smile on her face. She is a wonderful student in our program and we’re thankful to watch her grow as an equestrian! Keep up the great work, Caroline!! 🎉🥳

Our thoughts are with the barns and horses affected, and we hope for a fast recovery!

If you are concerned your horse may have been exposed or is showing signs, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Thank you everyone for your cooperation at this time!

‼️🌟This weeks is one of Baylee’s students, Lyla! Lyla is 12 years old and in the 6️⃣th grade. Her favorite subject is art (🎨), she loves all things Tim Burton (🎬) and gym class (🤸🏼‍♀️). Her favorite HFH horse is our girl Bonnie (🐴) and she loves draft breeds! Lyla has been riding for 4️⃣ years now, when she grows up she wants to be a veterinarian (👩🏼‍⚕️) or a physical therapist (🩻). Lyla’s favorite movies are the Pirates of the Caribbean series (🏴‍☠️)…..ours too! ☺️
Keep up the great work Lyla!!🌟‼️

A note from Baylee: “Lyla’s passion for riding and caring for horses is something I noticed right away when I first met her. Her quiet hands, natural seat, and quirky attitude makes her a great rider on any horse. Lessons with her are always filled with laughter and fun as well as her desire to become a better rider. ” ✨☺️🤩

🌟🌟This week’s is one of our hunt seat students, Eleanor! Eleanor rides with our instructor, Jordan. Eleanor is in 5th grade; she is very artistic (🎨) and loves drawing, graphic design, reading and playing violin (🎻). She was a part of Holly Strings Youth orchestra for the past three seasons, however she took a break from orchestra to focus on riding (lucky us☺️). In the summertime she participates on a swim team (🏊🏻‍♀️), and she also attends Polish school (😎). Her favorite color is black (🖤), her favorite horse is a Friesian or Arabian (🐴). In the future she wants to have her own horse farm, play violin in an orchestra, and to write and illustrate books. 🌟🌟

👩🏽‍🏫💙Instructor kudos: “Eleanor is a lovely student to work with and always brings her A-Game to each lesson. She is the epitome of a motivated, and passionate young rider - I feel so lucky to introduce her to the equestrian world! It has been such a pleasure working with Eleanor, and I can’t wait to see all the things she accomplishes in the future… keep up the great work Eleanor!! You got this!!” - Jordan

** For your consideration **
About 15 years old, palomino quarter horse mare. We suspect that she was a previous barrel racing horse. Very sweet girl, but takes her time to warm up to you (not 100% sure about prior history). Cross ties well to be groomed. She does need to be sedated for the farrier. Jingle has been used in our lesson program with riders at the peewee level and up. Has a little bit of go to her but can easily be brought back, she just truly loves her job, is so happy with work and aims to please. Goes English and Western but she does not like to jump and has stopped when trying to jump over cross rails - currently she is just doing W/T but she is eager to do more. She is a lovely ride on trails. Currently ridden in a hackamore bridle so lesson kids do not pull on her face too much while learning to steer. We suspect she may have issues with one or both of her stifles but we have not officially had her vetted. Serious potential buyers are welcome to have her vetted at buyers own expense. This is a very special horse with a heart of gold. Unfortunately our program needs a horse that is able to do more for upper level riders. Jingle would make a lovely pasture pet (especially if purchased with current pasture mate, Lady), or a great fit to do light work under saddle with someone who is just passionate about the sport. She is herd bound, and does not like to be in the field or barn by herself. She can ride in the ring alone or in a group. We just want what is best for Miss Jingle and want her to go to the right home. Low 🥕,🥕🥕🥕 OBO. Videos available upon request.

📣📣Major shoutout to these three volunteers for all of their hardwork today!!! These women helped get horses ready for lessons, cleaned the WHOLE barn, cleaned up around the aisle to the pastures AND gave a little extra love to some of the horses that weren’t in lessons today. We couldn’t do what we do without amazing people like Hannah, Grace and Kendall!

Thank you for all that you each do 💜💜

Send us an email at [email protected] to be able to spend quality time at the barn, make some friends, and enjoy the company of our fuzzy horses!
