Our mission is to promote the rescue and adoption of companion animals, with a focus on senior and special needs pets. We believe every soul has intrinsic value and we seek to help communities see that value to create a kinder world. Our goals are to rescue animals from shelters, place them in lov

ing foster homes, and adopt them out to forever homes, as well as strengthen our communities’ education, laws and regulations regarding animal overpopulation and care.

“Neshama” means “soul” in Hebrew - our goal is to do soulful work and save as many souls as possible.

🤍 ARLO 🤍 A majestic, loyal guardian bestie, Arlo is ready for a committed family who won’t give up on him. Found as a stray, this guy is waiting for his people. He deserves the loyalty he gives so lovingly. His season is coming- cold- and he is READY! While he does love to be outside in the cool weather, he also loves being inside with his people. This is Ben! One of a handful of adoptable animals still with Neshama. He wants to show off some of his end of summer photos to try to find the right family! Ben is a 3 year old ~75 pound mix LB mix 🖤 He is the coolest color with a dark ridge down his back, and is extremely soft. He is easy to train, very obedient, and extremely fun! Couch potatoes need not apply, as Ben wants to do things (with or without you) but preferably with you (though cuddling on the couch is awesome after doing other stuff together). Ben has started scent work training, has professional obedience training, and will excel at any job he is given the chance to try! He is good with other dogs when managed by a seasoned dog lover. He currently lives easily with 5+ other dogs and is very gentle when playing with his friends, but sometimes is unsure how to handle new friends - but then takes guidance well. He is still being introduced to cats, but can likely coexist with them just fine as his prey drive is medium - low. Sanctuary pup, Gertie, update ❤️ What we thought was a ruptured mammary tumour was an exacerbated skin tag/nipple which became infected from either too much licking or from the folds of her skin rubbing a great deal. Because of her serious belly folds, this made it hard to see and even harder to treat. Her wound was cleaned and as you can see, she didn’t hold a grudge against her doctor! She’s now on oral and topical antibiotics for her irritation. We are so relieved! She will now return to her fluffy bed for naps and keeping all the other dogs in line. Her medicine and vet visit came to a total of $210, if you feel led to donate to her care.

Happy National Dog Day! These are three doggies who need a home to call their own. We are eager to find their special people! Dreamy, Ben and Arlo. They’ve been waiting so long for their families and their foster homes are eager to foster other doggies in need. We adopted a sweet, older poodle named Taffy to a woman who applied for him two years ago. He was for her mother, who lived on the same property as her daughter. Her daughter, April, had built her momma, Miss Joyce, a little house on her land so that she could oversee her care and spend time with her. Miss Joyce deeply loved Taffy and he brought her comfort these last two years. Miss Joyce passed away this week and now Taffy is being cared for by April, along with her other animal companions. Taffy is being lovingly cared for just as he lovingly cared for Miss Joyce in the last two years of her life. We are moved by their love and story, but also the path chosen by the caring daughter who did everything right by her momma and by Taffy. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to Neshama to continue our sanctuary care. But please, more than that, we ask that you PLEASE take care of your loved ones and their animal companions. It is sacred, important work that makes the world better. Meet Uma! Rescued by a dear friend of Neshama’s, she’s an1.5 year old tuxie beauty located near Asheville. Super goofy girl. 🤪 She was found with 6 tiny kittens in January. The babies have homes and now it’s her turn. She would thrive in a low key house with maybe 1 or 2 cats. Uma is indifferent toward animals in general. Homegirl loves lettuce and her people! Laila tov, sweet Blanche. The world’s teensiest dog who we have ever seen passed away today after a hard fought fight with cancer. We don’t know how old she was, but not a spring chick. Her momma found her at a shelter and had to have her to foster… you see how that turned out! She was well loved, adored, spoiled at the end of her life, and that’s all we can ever want for our animal companions. A Neshama alum, Blanche brought so much joy to so many out in the world thanks to her mom for sharing her with us. We don’t deserve dogs, but we are so glad we get the chance to learn from them and live with them for a little while. Adopt a senior. Make the world kinder, brighter, better, like Blanche. ❤️🐶

Meet Arlo – Your Loyal, Loving Guardian!
This majestic Great Pyrenees is the definition of calm, sweet, and gentle. Currently being fostered in a loving home, he’s shown us just how affectionate and well-mannered he can be. He loves cuddling on the couch, lounging around the house, and playing with our two resident dogs – he’s a big fan of furry friends!

True to his breed, he has strong guardian instincts and takes his role of protector seriously. You’ll often find him laying by the front door or at the entrances to rooms, always keeping a quiet, watchful eye over the home. Because of this, he does best with slow introductions to new people and situations. He would thrive in a home with a couple or a single woman looking for companionship and a loyal protector.

He prefers to be indoors during the hot summer months, but come winter? He’s in his element! Nothing makes him happier than stretching out in the snow and taking it all in – he’s built for the cold and loves it, but he is an Indoor companion.

He can get a bit anxious on walks and may need some extra training, patience, and reassurance to help build his confidence in new environments. With the right support, he’ll continue to grow into the secure and well-rounded dog he’s meant to be.

Yesterday, Neshama alum and treasured soul left this world for one where he can see, run, and eat all the things. His mom, Kathy, was his best advocate, his love and snuggle buddy. We are so grateful for the best end of life care he got with her and for the many months of LOVE. Thank you, Kathy, & Kim for picking him up from the shelter and naming him after Neil Diamond 😂 Neil was a sweet boy and Kathy, we grieve this loss with you. Thank you for always taking on hard, but sacred work.
