July 4th
People ooh and ahh at fireworks, but unexpected, intermittent loud noises tend to have the opposite effect on dogs. That's why more pets go missing on July 4th than on any other day of the year.

Itโs best to keep pets inside during July Fourth celebrations. For one, dogs donโt sweat to cool themselves the way we humans do, making them much more susceptible to overheating. Many dogs are also overwhelmed or overly excited by a large gathering of people, and some people arenโt comfortable or confident interacting with dogs.
Keeping your dog in the house is a great first step, but itโs more ideal to have your pet behind a barrier when there are people coming in and out of the house. This helps ensure your pet doesnโt have the opportunity to dart outside and get loose. This could be:
A baby gate
An interior door
A crate
A pen
Consider how the excitement of the day may affect your pet. For cats and dogs more sensitive to noise, a room that has the least exposure to the outdoors and the best sound dampening would likely be most comfortable for them.
They will appreciate a cozy bed or a familiar place for them to lounge, enrichment toys or their favorite chew, and fresh water. Adding white noise or music to drown out additional noise, or a pheromone diffuser such as Feliwayยฎ or Adaptilโข, can provide additional stress relief.
If your pet has shown fear, anxiety, or stress with sudden loud noises in the past, it is best to start making arrangements for them a few weeks before the Fourth of July. This includes discussing their sensitivity with your vet and planning for the holiday. This may include:
Prescription medications for your dog or cat
Calming chews or supplements, such as VetriScience Composure or Nutramax Solliquin Chewable Tablets
Environmental modifications
Anxiety vests, such as a ThunderShirt
Appeasing pheromones
Practicing desensitization and counter conditioning to firework sounds leading up to the holiday can also help reduce fear. Pets who are anxious typically should not be left alone, so hiring a pet sitter or making plans to stay with them during fireworks is also important.

Even when taking all precautions, accidents can still happen. Itโs important to make sure your pet can be easily identified and returned to you if they do get loose. Having your pet wear a collar with up-to-date contact information can make their prompt return more likely.
Having your animals microchippedโand the microchip registered with all necessary informationโprovides an added method of identification if they happen to lose their collar. Itโs also a good idea to have clear, up-to-date photos of your pets in case they go missing.

While it can be tempting to share our Fourth of July feast with our pets, itโs often not safe to do so. Many common backyard barbecue foods carry serious medical risks for both dogs and cats. Beyond the risk of gastrointestinal upset, many ingredients are also incredibly toxic to our pets, such as onions, garlic, and grapes.
Dogs cannot digest high-fat foods well, and ingesting large quantities of snacks like brisket or hot dogs can lead to a very painful condition called pancreatitis. Things like corn cobs and meat bones pose a risk of causing a GI obstruction. If bones are chewed and splinter, the sharp pieces ingested may lead to perforations of the esophagus or intestines. Itโs best to avoid sharing food with your pet altogether.
Alcohol can be very toxic to dogs and cats, causing depression of the central nervous system, organ failure, and even death.
Itโs important to note that alcohol does not have to be ingested for your pets to have a toxic reaction; it can also be absorbed through the skin. For your petsโ safety, any product containing alcohol should be kept out of their reach.

Glow sticks are very popular on July Fourth, but they are not safe for pets. Glow sticks contain the chemical dibutyl phthalate and, though itโs non-toxic, when chewed or ingested glow sticks can cause reactions in dogs and cats such as:
Drooling
Pawing at the mouth
Agitation
Potentially vomiting
Citronella is commonly used during the summer as an insect repellant. It can be found as candles, sprays, torches, essential oils, and in plant form. But none of these products are ideal for our pets to be around.
Burning citronella can be a respiratory irritant for pets, and ingesting the candles can cause severe GI upset. Coming into contact with a citronella plant can cause skin irritation in pets, while ingesting the plant can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, and weakness. Itโs best to avoid having our dogs and cats around any type of citronella.
Pets donโt tolerate hot, humid weather well, and high temperatures can put them at risk of overheating. Providing ample shade and plenty of cool water are two things we can do to minimize this risk, but itโs important to keep an eye out for signs that our pets are too hot.
Heavy panting, labored breathing, drooling, red mucus membranes, and an increased heart rate are all possible signs of an overheating pet. Brachycephalic pets, pets with laryngeal paralysis, or pets with other types of respiratory compromise are even more at risk of overheating, so extra precautions should be taken to protect them from the summer heat.
Firing up the grill for a yummy barbecue is a quintessential Fourth of July tradition. Unfortunately, grilling is not an activity thatโs safe for our pets to take part in.
All pets should be a minimum of 3 feet away from open flames or hot grills. Itโs even more ideal to have the grill be inaccessible to them completely. Smoke inhalation can cause significant respiratory irritation, so avoid having pets downwind of any flames. Lighter fluid, matches, and lighters are all toxic to our pets, and the grease drippings from the grill are also not safe for them to lick up.
Preparing ahead of time and taking the necessary precautions to ensure the well-being of our pets can allow us all to have a funโand safeโholiday.

Hello, my lovely neighbors and pet lovers, I just want to introduce myself. I've been in the community for about 2.5 years. I am a professional dog walker/ Pet sitter and volunteer in the community. Here's my page where you can book a pet sitter or a dog Walker.
โค6 SPRING ACTIVITIES THAT YOUR DOG WILL LOVE โค
Labrador shaking with a ball in its mouthWhen the weather starts to warm up after a frigid and long winter, humans arenโt the only ones who get extremely excited about spending time outdoors. Dogs are pretty darn ecstatic for springtime, too! Spending time in the sun can benefit you and your pup, and help you both get a little more exercise than you may have been getting before (you know, when it was too cold to even consider a walk around the block, let alone a beach day). If you and your dog are ready to play outside, take a look at these spring activities youโll both enjoy:
1. Go Camping
Who says you have to put your pup in a doggie daycare center when you go on vacation? Why not bring him or her along for the trip? Camping trips can be fun for dogs of any size, and it will give you both a chance to spend some quality time hiking and exploring. And you donโt have to rough it (pun intended) in a tent for the trip to be a success. Check out dog-friendly cabins at parks or lakes near you, and make it a double date by inviting a friend who has his or her own pup that can come along.
2. Take a Swim
A lot of dogs absolutely love the chance to have some water fun, whether that means hitting the beach, finding a hiking trail near a lake or exploring a nearby river together. Even if thereโs a stream, creek or pond somewhere near home, you and Fido can spend a couple hours splashing around and playing fetch in the water. If youโre planning on getting in, though, save this one for the warmer days or pack a towel so you can dry off.
3. Work Out Together
Feeling some cabin fever after this winter? If so, now is your opportunity to get active in the great outdoorsโand bringing your dog along is a great way to bond with each other and get a good workout in at the same time. Take out your bike, rollerblades or simply your jogging shoes, grab a leash and hit the pavement. Research some of the most dog-friendly parks in your city and do your outdoor workouts there. You may meet some other dog owners, and youโll know youโre in an area where you and Fido can let loose.
4. Have Some Off-Leash Fun
If you live in a dog-friendly apartment, your building management may provide a small off-leash area for dogs to run around and get some exercise. If youโre looking for somewhere with a little more space to let your pup have some freedom, research off-leash beaches or dog parks in your city. Bring along some tennis balls, a Frisbee or any other toy your dog will have fun chasing. Not only will Fido have a blast running around outside, heโll also be able to meet and interact with some other dogs (just make sure you keep a close eye on those interactions in case either pup gets scared or aggressive).
5. Get Competitive
Is your dog still a puppy? If so, itโs important to get him trained so that he knows some basic commands, like sit, stay and lie down. However, competitive training takes these commands a step further by teaching dogs to jump through hoops and make their way through other obstacles in the course. Look online to see if there are any competitive training courses offered in your area. Theyโre often done outside, giving you both a chance to enjoy the spring weather.
6. Go Shopping
The next time you take Fido for a walk, look up some dog-friendly shops and cafes in the area that wonโt mind if you both come inside. Pet supply stores, including larger ones like PetSmart and Petco are usually completely fine with dogs and cats coming in to shop with their owners, and you can both have fun walking around the neighborhood and window shopping along the way. Then, head to a dog-friendly cafe or patio where you can both relax, take in the sun and grab a bite to eat before heading home.
No matter what you do, aim for getting outside with your dog at least a few times a weekโyouโll both love the chance to soak in the sunshine and warm weather!

More Tips for Playing Fetch
Use the power of language. Dogs have a great ability to build comprehension of your words. When you use specific phrases and actions together consistently, your dog will quickly learn what behavior is desired with each command.
Beat boredom. Remember, even fetch gets boring after a while. Try introducing new challenges like holding your dogโs collar as you throw the toy and making them wait to retrieve it. You can even introduce the command โwaitโ to let them know when itโs time to make a retrieval.
Rewards are great. Treats and hugs are great ways to reinforce a behavior you want to encourage. Reward your dog for chasing after a toy and bringing it back to you. Take time to hug and pet your dog so they know how much you love playing fetch, too. Keep treats in your pocket for a nice surprise.
Run with your dog. If your dog isnโt a natural runner, take off after the toy when you throw it. They may not be able to resist running alongside you. Praise the effort and keep encouraging them with positive affirmations.
Get the toy back. Some dogs will fetch and even retrieve the ball but then wonโt let you have it back. They may be trying out a different game, hoping youโll chase them. If this happens, use the โdrop itโ command, so the dog makes a connection between specific words and what you want them to do. If you offer dogs a treat to drop the ball, theyโll often catch on.
Train with a ball in hand. You can use playing fetch to take your dogโs training one step further. Introduce an additional command like โgive it,โ so your dog will put the ball in your hand and not just drop it on the ground. You can also use this as an opportunity to teach your dog โbring it,โ especially if theyโre naturally dropping the toy part of the way back to you. If they drop the toy early, start to move further away from the dog before they drop it. Then motion them to follow you and say โbring it.โ Doing this consistently will help teach them that command.
Leave them wanting more. If you end a fetch game before your dog loses interest, it keeps them from getting bored with the game so they'll be excited to play again next time.

A Happy Dog is A Tired Dog
You can easily tell if your dog is getting the right amount of exercise by noting what the dog does when you are finished. If the dog falls over and sleeps for the rest of the day, you probably overdid it. If she runs up to you with her favorite ball and wants to play fetch, well maybe you should throw the ball until she uses up some more energy. If she wants to rest and take a short nap, youโve found the right amount of exercise for your dog.
