Before the internet we had CB Radio and before that we had Amateur Radio enthusiast in many towns worldwide. The hobby is still around to today and currently I only know of one near me, whilst back in the 1950's/'60's I could point out three huge aerials within half a mile of my parents home. Having said that with modern day equipment, I'm only guessing the height of aerials probably don't go so high as before.
The history of amateur radio, dates to the dawn of radio communications, with published instructions for building simple wireless sets appearing at the beginning of the twentieth century. Throughout its history, amateur radio enthusiasts have made significant contributions to science, engineering, industry, and social services. Research by amateur radio operators has founded new industries, built economies, empowered nations and saved lives in times of emergency.

Like all other issues of the NC Section Newsletter, this newsletter is archived at ncarrl.org.

I hope 2025 is good for you and your families and that you are blessed with good health. Stay warm and do something that will help the thousands of persons in western North Carolina who lost so much as a result of Tropical Storm Helene.

December 4 NCARRL news

Because the ARRL bulk mail system has not been restored since the May 16 ransomware attack, I am still unable to send the twice a month newsletter to the 2814 ARRL members in North Carolina.

Please share the December 4 newsletter with members in your club and to others who may find the radio related content interesting.

https://www.ncarrl.org/Newsletters/December_4_2024.html

Copies of previous NC Section Newsletters are archived at ncarrl.org.

Please help the Christmas tree farmers when you buy a real tree for your home or office. Many trees were destroyed by the mudslides that were part of the Hurricane Helene disaster.

Be careful as you move about because bones often get broken when people slip on ice.

Best wishes as we deal with some of the coldest weather so far this year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION From Steve Waterman via Winlink Programs Group

We need to keep a clear Part 97.221(b) for any individual or agency needing to use Winlink for EmComm on our US Ham bands.

Specifically:
28.120-28.189 MHz,
24.925-24.930 MHz,
21.090-21.100 MHz,
18.105-18.110 MHz,
14.0950-14.0995 MHz, 14.1005-14.112 MHz,
10.140-10.150 MHz,
7.100-7.105 MHz,
3.585-3.600 MHz

Considering that our occupied bandwidth for protocols used is between 2.3KHz and 2.75 KHz, and that we share these segments with others, we don’t have much wriggle room!

Lastly, a US end-user may also use RMS gateways from other countries that will appear outside these segments since they are present as a control operator (not under automatic control). This would include the RMS gateways in Canada, Mexico, ITU sponsored gateways in Central America and the Caribbean.

FYI,

Steve, k4cjx

Misinformation can spread quickly after a disaster, causing confusion and distrust within communities struggling to recover. Unfortunately, we’re seeing this during our response to Hurricane Helene.

Sharing rumors online without first vetting the source and verifying facts ultimately hurts people — people who have just lost their homes, neighborhoods, and, in some cases, loved ones. They are already unsure where to turn for help, and spreading misinformation only adds to that uncertainty. It also disrupts our ability to deliver critical aid and affects the disaster workers who have put their own lives on hold to assist those in need.

Here are a few common rumors we have recently seen on social media that we'd like to address:

- "The Red Cross isn’t here."
This is simply not true. Before Helene made landfall, we prepositioned hundreds of Red Cross disaster responders and thousands of relief supplies across the Southeast to support people affected in the aftermath. Today, more than 1,300 disaster responders are helping people in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia, ensuring they have safe shelter, food, hygiene items, medication and emotional support.

- "The Red Cross is confiscating or throwing out donated items."
We are not confiscating, removing or discarding donated items. We focus on providing shelter, food, and relief after disasters. While we don't accept physical donations, as managing them takes time and resources away from our mission, we work with community partners who are better equipped with these resources to handle and distribute these items. For information on where donated goods are available, please call 211.

- "The Red Cross is taking over shelters."
We do not forcefully take over shelters. However, we do provide management support at the request of partners. This is a collaborative effort that no one organization can do alone. Local partnerships are established before disasters to ensure shelter needs are met, and we collaborate with partners to transition evacuation centers into post-storm shelters. We do not take over facilities where partners are still providing services.

- "The Red Cross is taking over volunteer groups."
This is untrue. While we are working alongside other volunteer groups helping during this disaster, the Red Cross is not taking over their efforts or services.

For safety, all Red Cross volunteers must go through a background check and Red Cross training before deploying to support a disaster response. We do not manage or deploy volunteers who haven’t completed this process, including local residents who sign up after a disaster. They must undergo the same screening and training as current volunteers.

has proved to be critical in areas hit hard by , especially in North and South Carolina, portions of Tennessee, and beyond

For several days, radio communications were the only means of passing information. Ham radio continues to play a significant role in this situation.

I know if you have internet enough or phone for Facebook you probably are able to communicated via phone or text.
But.... if you are in the effected area of hurricane Helene, or know anyone that is in the effected area, the Mt Mitchell Ham Radio repeater, 145.19 Mhz, -600 Khz is up and running with hams able to make phone calls for anyone in the effected area that might need to make contact out of the area.
Please direct anyone you may know to monitor the Mt Mitchell repeater to communicate out of the area.
Thanks
