A question we get asked sometimes: why do we let our grass get so tall at our dog boarding business?

It's a great question, and we're happy to share our reasoning! During the warmer months, we intentionally let our grass grow a bit taller to keep the ground cooler for our furry friends. It's all about creating a comfortable and healthy environment for them to run and play.

And as an added bonus, our feathered friends - a flock of chickens, guineas, and turkeys - help us keep those pesky ticks under control. So, while our lawn might look a bit wild, it's all part of our commitment to providing a safe and happy haven for the dogs in our care. 🐾✨

For the love of everything please do not walk your dogs in the heat. It is 103 out where I am and that means the asphalt is at least 124-150+ Fahrenheit. If you have to let your dog out to go potty stay on the grass and take short walks. Please don’t burn your poor dogs feet. 😭

I also had a dog owner ask if there’s any guide to heat/exercise at the dog park and there isn’t. It varies so greatly by breed, temperature, and humidity. I have seen brachycephalic dogs (short nose breeds like pugs, bull dogs, shih tzu’s) who have died of heatstroke when it’s only 80 degrees out. IF you take your dog to the park or plan on exercising them do so in the morning and evening, in the shade. You can also give them cool treats like cold carrots, cold/frozen blueberries, cold watermelon, frozen peas. Do enrichment activities like splash pads and baby pools full of ice cubes and/or water.

If you think your pet has heat exhaustion or heat stroke call your closest emergency vet, if you can use the ac in your car do that, you can also put cool water on the paws- biologically that’s where dogs sweat and cool down and is the safest way to help before getting to a vet- if it’s not immediately available do not waste time trying to do it. Never submerge a pet with potential heat stroke in cold or freezing water, do not soak their body in water because their coats logged with water could insulate them and make them even hotter.

When I first launched my boarding business, my focus was solely on board and train services, as training is my true passion. However, as my business grew, I realized the importance of offering boarding options as well - and I've come to love it just as much! The purpose of training isn't to have a dog that only listens in your home, but that listens anywhere. At Red Earth Thunder we believe in letting dogs be dogs, within reason.

Here you'll see a very young puppy (13 weeks old) investigate a turtle for the first time. She wasn't posing an immediate danger to the turtle, so I allowed it. It is ok to let dogs explore their world. However, the key to safe exploration is intervention BEFORE she becomes too interested. The most common mistake I see pet parents make is being reactive instead of proactive. Being proactive sets your dog up for success and is much easier than trying to correct inappropriate behavior later.

Being cute has its perks. Unfortunately for small dogs, those perks come with some problems. Cute little dogs are often allowed to get away with a lot more than big dogs. Jumping, growling, and even nibbling is considered so cute and harmless. Unfortunately, no matter their size, all dogs have the same instincts. And allowing your little dogs to get away with unwanted behavior can snowball to dangerous levels. Resource guarding is a problem with a lot of dogs, but it can be especially difficult to correct when your dog is used to getting away with everything. In this video you will see a particularly tricky case we are currently working with. She has shown some resistance to our usual tactic of teaching "leave it" and "drop it".
