Happy holidays from Belle and Daisy! Belle is a foster fail that started out very leash reactive, resource guarding all her toys, and was actually fairly aggressive to her new sister Daisy. After lots of compassion and dedication, her foster parents were able to help her drop her guard and become part of the family. I am so proud of her!

If you take your dog anywhere out in public chances are that someone is going to want to pet them. Of course many dogs would kill to receive pets from a new friend, but that isn’t always the case. So often I see people happy to have their pets meet strangers when the dogs absolutely want no part of it. So they try convincing them with treats, the stranger bends over or leans down to appear less scary, the dog is tied to the leash and unable to get away. The owner tightens the leash to bring the dog closer to the person, they get their pets and perhaps they seem to like it. They could lean into it, roll over for belly rubs, things that to an untrained eye looks like happy behavior. But in reality the dog is feeling helpless, trying to deescalate the situation.
Forcing your dog to greet people they don’t want to greet creates mistrust between them and you. They learn that when they’re uncomfortable, you will force them to get closer to whatever it is. You won’t allow them to feel relief and get away. You are teaching them that you cannot be trusted to keep them safe. Best case scenario you have a dog that develops learned helplessness where they freeze up and take it until they can get away. Worse case you have a dog who learns the only way to have their boundaries respected is to bite.
If a person wants to meet your dog and your dog shows any sign of apprehension, tell that person they don’t want to. Allow your dog to go up to the person, or walk away if they don’t want to. It is much better to disappoint a stranger than to damage the trust between you and your dog. Teaching them that you will respect them creates a dog who is confident in social situations and won’t feel like they have to escalate to be safe.
