The weather is warming up, and more pet guardians are taking their pups out and about! It’s lovely to see a happy, relaxed #patiopup or #brewerydog enjoying a nice afternoon with their family. Like their human counterparts, though, some pups enjoy the social aspects of being on the town, and some do not. It’s important to take their feelings into consideration as well… poor experiences can make future excursions stressful! To help keep your outings positive and fun for everyone - the guardian, the pet, and the other patrons - keep these tips in mind:•keep your trips reasonable in length, especially with younger dogs or puppies. older dogs with more experience may do well with longer durations, but puppies and inexperienced dogs may only be able to handle 20-30 minutes at a time. be prepared to pack up and go if your dog starts to show signs of stress. •patio sitting may not be very fulfilling or enriching for some dogs. bring a favorite chew, toy, or puzzle for your dog. Taking your new pet on car rides to pet-friendly stores, patios, and veterinary hospitals for happy visits allows them to comfortably experience a variety of new stimuli. Allow these developing minds to explore and investigate their environment to build confidence, and have plenty of yummy treats available to reinforce all good behaviors!It’s equally important to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety. As their guardian, be comfortable advocating for them! I’m a very firm believer that “puppies meet people; people don’t meet puppies.” If your puppy may not have a good interaction with a stranger, avoid it! It’s acceptable to tell people “we’re just people watching today, not saying hi.” Look for private, in-home training or group classes that focus on environmental exposure and foundation behaviors run by reinforcement-based trainers.
