The weather is warming up, and more pet guardians are taking their pups out and about! Itâs lovely to see a happy, relaxed #patiopup or #brewerydog enjoying a nice afternoon with their family. Like their human counterparts, though, some pups enjoy the social aspects of being on the town, and some do not. Itâs important to take their feelings into consideration as well⌠poor experiences can make future excursions stressful! To help keep your outings positive and fun for everyone - the guardian, the pet, and the other patrons - keep these tips in mind:â˘keep your trips reasonable in length, especially with younger dogs or puppies. older dogs with more experience may do well with longer durations, but puppies and inexperienced dogs may only be able to handle 20-30 minutes at a time. be prepared to pack up and go if your dog starts to show signs of stress. â˘patio sitting may not be very fulfilling or enriching for some dogs. bring a favorite chew, toy, or puzzle for your dog. Iâm a fan of frozen, stuffed Toppls or Kongs to keep them occupied. â˘advocate for your dog! a simple âthank you but weâre just here to enjoy the weather/scene/etc and not say hi todayâ is usually sufficient for well-meaning strangers. advocacy also means leaving when your pup says itâs time to go. if youâd like to freshen up your dogâs manners and begin practicing for patio season, I can help! Socialization prepares your puppy or kitten to be comfortable as adults with people, places, sights, sounds, smells, surfaces, other animals, and more! Based on young animalsâ developmental stages, the most critical socialization period is between 3-16 weeks for puppies and 3-9 weeks for kittens. Ideally, weâre bringing our new babies home at 8-10 weeks old, when their vaccine series will have be started. During this time, and prior to the completion of their vaccine series, itâs imperative to ensure positive, short, and fun environmental interactions! Taking your new pet on car rides to pet-friendly stores, patios, and veterinary hospitals for happy visits allows them to comfortably experience a variety of new stimuli. Allow these developing minds to explore and investigate their environment to build confidence, and have plenty of yummy treats available to reinforce all good behaviors!Itâs equally important to ensure your petâs comfort and safety. As their guardian, be comfortable advocating for them! Iâm a very firm believer that âpuppies meet people; people donât meet puppies.â If your puppy may not have a good interaction with a stranger, avoid it! Itâs acceptable to tell people âweâre just people watching today, not saying hi.â Look for private, in-home training or group classes that focus on environmental exposure and foundation behaviors run by reinforcement-based trainers. Sessions should be short and fun, discuss problem prevention & troubleshooting, and require age-appropriate vaccines.Getting a head start on appropriate socialization and exposure can go a long way in raising a well-adjusted pet!
