We are so proud of the work this team has accomplished during our sessions together in the past few months. Mia was nervous of being handled by strangers, so we started working with her on some cooperative care training. The chin rest can be used as a communication tool during various procedures. The dog’s head or chin resting in the handlers hand is a green light to carry on with the procedure. However, if the dog breaks this position, the procedure should stop so that the dog can have a moment to decide if they are ready to continue. In this video, you can see Mia ask for a break to sniff the brush. Once she had a second to identify what it was, she places her head back in her owners hand to signal that she is now comfortable with being brushed. This type of training is considered behavior modification and involves changing how the dog feels about something. This takes time, consistency, and patience. Check out Tanner doing a fabulous job playing the Engage / Disengage game with his dad! This process helps change how Tanner feels about some of his triggers. Instead of reacting by barking and lunging, he looks to his dad for a reward whenever he sees the trigger. The key here is to start at a distance at which your dog can be successful and not react. This may seem simple, but it’s no small feat!! Daisy the Golden Retriever is working on navigating reactivity towards dogs, flying bugs, and birds. In this video you can see Daisy disengaging from a dog running in the distance! We met at a park to practice, since large open spaces lend themselves to helping us set dogs up for success. It’s much easier to work with a trigger you spot in the distance, and this is more challenging to do in neighborhood environments where triggers pop out from houses, and around corners!
