Hank update! ❤️ He his in such good spirits in his foster home, and he's clearly enjoying his newfound coziness! The change in his body language between now and when he was tied up in the cold shows so vividly how much better he is feeling now that he is safe and warm. Things are only going to get better from here on out.

We also wanted to give an update that many of you have asked about — we received word that law enforcement has officially brought misdemeanor animal cruelty charges against Hank's former owner, and this is a developing situation.

For those who have asked about donating to help reimburse the $500 Hank's rescuers had to pay to remove him, those rescuers are from Promoting Animal Welfare in NC, and they would certainly appreciate it (their website is pawnc.org).

While we continue taking care of Hank, we know there are more pets out there just like him. As these bitter nights get colder and colder, those pets are going to need help too. To help Hank or the next dog like him, please donate via our website at spcawake.org/donate ❤️

Hank made some big waves this month after he was discovered shivering, tied to a tree, with all his ribs showing. If he looks familiar to you, you may have seen him on some recent news stories by My Carolina CBS 17. Fortunately, after much discussion and the owner's request of $500, Hank was voluntarily relinquished to our friends at Promoting Animal Welfare in NC where he has spent the past week gobbling down food and water, warming up in a foster home, and beginning his physical rehabilitation.

We've been following Hank's journey closely after seeing the video of him tied to a tree online. And yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Hank to SPCA Wake, picking up the baton on helping this sweet guy continue to recover and find a loving home in time for the holidays ❤️

Please join us in welcoming this deserving young dog to the SPCA, and in thanking the tireless individuals and advocates in our community who got Hank out of a bad situation, giving him this second chance at a better future. We are always inspired by the dedication of animal lovers in our community who come together to fight for the underdogs and leave no life forgotten.

We will keep you posted with updates to Hank's story — and hopefully soon, his adoption!

Please welcome our newest hippopotamus, PORK CHOP 🦛 😍 He is 51 lbs. of wrinkles and squish! Pork Chop is just a big ol' wiggle butt who spends half his time belly-up, tail wagging waiting for someone to come rub his belly. So if you need to reach our team today and can't get through, it's because we have all collected in a circle around Pork Chop. Thank you for understanding 🦛

Only four hours left to have your donation ✨ TRIPLE MATCHED ✨ to help shelter pets in North Carolina! Homeless pets need our help — especially during these cold winter months. We're so happy to share this Oscar update with you! Grooming, sweaters, TLC, and a lot of love have brought out the best in this sweet little guy. He is like a brand new dog! He's still pretty skinny, and it'll be a slow and steady process to get him fully back to a healthy weight. But in terms of his spirit, Oscar has really done a 180.

The day our staff member found him on the side of the road, she made a comment about his dull eyes having no life left in them. Seeing him now, she cried and said "look, the light is back in his eyes."

Thank you so much for all the love and words of support for Oscar and our team, and thank you to his foster moms for all the love they've given him to help him recover in body and soul. And thank you to everyone who has made a donation to help Oscar and the other pets like him who need our help (don't forget, those donations are being matched all November long, so your gift means 2x as much!)

Oscar is going up for adoption today thanks to everyone who stepped up to help him. If you're interested in learning more, visit our website at spcawake.org/dogs ❤️

One of our staff members spotted this guy running along Capital Blvd at night. He ran and tried to hide, but she was able to scoop him up in a pile of blankets and bring him to safety. We've named him Oscar.

Oscar has no signs of having an owner. No collar, no microchip, no lost pet flyers or missing posts — it seems he has truly been on his own for a long time. But with a little love from human beings, he's not alone anymore.

Oscar is only about 4 years old, even though he doesn't look like it. He's severely underweight with the lowest possible body condition score (1/9). This baby boy has a lot of healing to do.

Please consider making a donation to help toward Oscar's care, and other pets like him who need our help. 🚨 Now through the end of November, every dollar you donate will be MATCHED up to $238,000 — that means a $100 gift becomes $200 to go 2x as far for pets as we enter the colder months 🚨 Click the donate button below or visit our fundraiser at facebook.com/donate/944364620871196 🙏

It breaks our hearts to see pets in pain, but when people step up to help, we can transform that pain into one of the most beautiful things in the world — the unconditional love that comes with pet adoption and rescue ❤️ This unconditional love changes everything. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all you do to help.

We will continue to keep you updated as his recovery continues ❤️‍🩹

Thank goodness for these passerbys' intuition that there was something funny about this bin sitting at Wooten Park. Taped shut, no air holes. It was their gut feeling that saved the two cats and four kittens inside.

It appears this group is a multi-generational cat family. A mother cat with her grown daughter, and another four small kittens under her belt. We welcomed them to warmth and safety at the SPCA, and made sure their finders knew how grateful we were that they followed their instincts and investigated.

The grown daughter has been so sweet, cuddling and grooming her mom while she cares for her four little ones. These six kitties have been moved to a quiet foster home to decompress after their ordeal.

These situations are upsetting. There's no way around that. Should there have been air holes? Yes. But it's important to look at these things through a lens of compassion. This bin was set out in a conspicuous spot, in a public place. They were nestled in blankets to keep warm. The lid was probably taped shut to keep the cats from escaping and keep predators out.

It's a tough situation out there and we know it. Shelters and rescues are full all over the place, and god knows there are more cats and kittens in our community that than there are homes. While there are certainly other options, we know that the person who set these cats out was trying to help, and may not have known another way. So we ask you to hold that same compassion in your heart when it may be tempting to jump straight to anger or judgment.

At the end of the day, these cats are safe because people truly care. The good Samaritans who found them truly care. Your support of our nonprofit allows us to help because you truly care. We are grateful for what your support allows us to do, and now these six beautiful cats are healthy, purring, warm, and in just the right place to set off into happy futures.

To anyone out there who may be in a tough situation with their animals, please know our Pet Helpline was built for you, and it is completely free. Visit spcawake.org/helpline and our team can help guide you through whatever situation you may be navigating. We are here for you. ❤️

These three dogs have spent a combined 1,553 days at the shelter — and in the last two weeks, they ALL got adopted!!! Excuse us while our hearts absolutely explode with joy! 😭

We can't express how much we appreciate these three wonderful families for welcoming these dogs we love so much into their homes. Luka, Keenan, and Frogger are so special to us, and seeing them finally start their new lives means everything.

We also want to thank you for supporting us — giving overlooked dogs the chance to find a family and never putting a deadline on their adoption takes a lot of love and care, and it wouldn't be possible if we didn't have you by our sides.

Please enjoy three of our most joyful gotcha day photos of this whole year 🥰❤️❤️❤️

The newest innovation in trick-or-treating is happening at SPCA Wake 💡 Instead of getting dressed up and going door to door, just get dressed up and then stay in your room. Then let lots of nice people will come DELIVER snacks to you, all day long, while they tell you that you are very cute and very good and the best in the whole world.

Clearly, this is the better way. It really is amazing how much we can learn from animals.
