The newest innovation in trick-or-treating is happening at SPCA Wake 💡 Instead of getting dressed up and going door to door, just get dressed up and then stay in your room. Then let lots of nice people will come DELIVER snacks to you, all day long, while they tell you that you are very cute and very good and the best in the whole world.

Clearly, this is the better way. It really is amazing how much we can learn from animals.

The most haunted building in North Carolina... and it's right under our noses.

Haters will say it's fake. But they weren't there.

When these phenomena first started to occur, we brought in some experts who used a spirit board to communicate with the entities. At great cost, they were able to deciper their names: Kale. Doe. Gimlet. Petri. Selden. Lost souls bound to the physical plane. But to release them, we must perform an ancient ritual — adoption — but we'll need the help of other human souls.

Together, if we hold light and love close to our hearts, these spirits may find peace. Blessed be the snoots. And Happy Halloween 👻

This "naughty" boy got adopted and turned out to be a perfect angel baby all along!

"When we were interested in Boots, we were told that he had a few behavioral issues including being bad on a leash, some resource guarding, and most notably that he was aggressive towards other dogs. We have not experienced any of those behavioral issues. He was shy when we brought him home but he warmed up fast! He just needed a home that would be patient with him! He quickly fell in love with the golden retriever girlie that lives next door so we had hope for him socializing with other dogs. We take him with us when we travel back home to Pennsylvania (he does amazing traveling) where he’s around several dogs, big and small, at one time and he has a blast with them. He is often shy and submissive to other dogs at first but once he realizes they are nice and want to play, it’s game on! Even in instances where another dog has nipped at him or when an off leash dog charged him, he was not aggressive. Boots also does amazing with my young niece and nephew and he loves the 2 little girls who live next door to us. He does great on walks, even when another dog is being walked alongside him! He’s 100% a mama’s boy and follows me around like a shadow! We recently added a kitten to our family and she and Boots are the best of friends! Like true siblings, they play hard and love hard! He lets her beat up on him pretty good and he takes it like a champ. They cuddle, they will drink out of the same bowl at the same time, and they even share toys."

These pictures make us so happy — there's no better feeling than knowing the pets we care for so deeply are having wonderful, rich lives after adoption, and that they are so loved. We hope this adoption update brings a smile to your face today!

There's bladder stones and then there's the straight-up vase filler we just surgically removed from 12-year-old Nala's bladder (photo in the comments below). This poor girl must have been so horribly uncomfortable — who knows how long she has been walking around full of literal rocks. They were so numerous and so large that we could feel the stones by rubbing her belly. We're just so grateful that your donations made it possible for us to provide this surgery in-house nearly as soon as Nala arrived here ❤️‍🩹

Nala is a sweet, spunky senior girl who loves people and appears to get along with other dogs! She's a youthful spirit who loves to play, and she's always got a smile on her face. We transferred Nala into our care from our partners at the Guilford County animal shelter because she needed this surgery. She is just about fully recovered and is looking for a family to call her own!

If you're interested in meeting Nala, come by our Adoption Center or visit our website at spcawake.org/dogs ❤️🐾

Had to do a double take to make sure Princeton was an actual dog and not a stuffed animal 🥹🧸

This sweet 15-year-old senior boy is a very nice, calm dog who loooves belly rubs. He is house- and crate-trained and comfortable around adults and older children. Prince enjoys spending time outside in the yard but does not like going on walks. He'd much rather spend his retirement curled up in a warm lap being told what a sweet baby angel he is ❤️ A relatively quiet, calm home with a lot of love to give would be the perfect fit for Princeton 🥰

Princeton is staying in a foster home — if you are interested in meeting/adopting him, please submit an Adoption Survey through our website (spcawake.org/dogs) 🐾

Our Hurricane Helene relief efforts continue to help rescue displaced pets from western NC as these communities and animal shelters focus on rebuilding and reuniting lost pets with their families. Our team just had two HUGE rescues in one day — 10 cats & kittens from Blue Ridge Humane Society and 2 dogs + 5 cats & kittens from Madison County Animal Services - NC and Asheville Humane Society. We imagine most of you reading this have never done intake for an shelter animal before, but let us tell you — it is a lot of work. Days like this are all hands on deck and a massive undertaking, but we are so happy to do it and truly moved to be able to offer this support to our friends out west and to all of these wonderful animals. We want to thank you for all of your donations and offers of help that are driving this effort forward.

All of these pets were already up for adoption at their shelter of origin, prior to the hurricane. Those shelters were already full, and in the wake of the storm, they are faced with wave after wave of lost & found pets that need sheltering in order to be reunited with their families. In order to make room for those lost pets and help get as many animals out to safe areas, we are working with several partners to make these ongoing transfers happen.

All of these pets will be (or already are) available for adoption through our website. If you are interested in bringing home a new friend, know that you are not only making a life-changing difference for that pet, you are also opening up another space for us to take in another pet from the next evacuation. Adoption is a great way to help save two lives at once ❤️ spcawake.org

Thank you to our transfer partners, our adopters, our volunteers, and our donors for coming together to make a truly lifesaving difference in the aftermath of this terrible disaster. You are all heroes — each and every one of you — and we are simply in awe of your love and support.

How it feels to be safe and warm after being evacuated to safety from the storm damage. ❤️‍🩹

Milton is one of a dozen pets who were flown out of Asheville this week. He is not a lost pet — he is ready to be adopted and start fresh with nothing but blue skies and sunshine ahead ☀️

We urgently need 50 adoptions by the end of this weekend in order to continue our efforts taking in evacuated pets from storm-damaged areas. For more information about Milton and our other adoptable pets and evacuees, visit our website at spcawake.org 🐾

🚨 Helene Relief SOS: We urgently need 50 pet adoptions by the end of the weekend 🚨 We are receiving requests every day from shelters affected by Helene to take in their displaced and evacuated animals. The affected shelters need to clear animals out to safe areas like Raleigh in order to create room for incoming lost pets so that they can reunite them with their owners. We are working hard to take in as many animals as possible, but we are limited in our capacity to help by space in our facility.

If you have been considering adopting or have been on the fence, consider this a big neon sign: Now is the time to adopt!

By adopting a pet from SPCA Wake, you are not only bringing joy and love into your own life, but you are also helping to save a life and provide a second chance for an animal in need ❤️‍🩹

We have cats, dogs, and small pets who need homes. Please visit our website at spcawake.org or our Pet Adoption Center (200 Petfinder Lane in Raleigh) any day of the week from 11-6pm!

Helene Update 🚨 We are working to take in as many pets as possible from western NC shelters, 1. To get pets to safety and 2. To free up space at those shelters for pets lost in the storm to be reunited with their owners. Today we welcomed 7 kittens and a sweet dog named Dumbo to SPCA Wake from our partners at the Gaston County Animal Shelter 🙏

Your support and donations are enabling us to provide all of their care and vet treatments on the road to adoption here in Raleigh. Thank you to everyone who has given and reached out to help! You are making a difference, and the volunteers and transporters from the western NC shelters have expressed how grateful they are for the relief — please know that we could not do this without you.

For those interested in adopting: These sweet faces arrived only minutes ago, so they are not ready for adoption *just* yet, but they will be soon (and many of the pets from Monday already are!) ❤️ Please check our website at spcawake.org — by adopting, you are also freeing up a space for us to rescue another pet affected by the hurricane!

Speaking of uplifting news... this weekend we had a blast meeting 220 pets and their humans at our low-cost Wellness Clinic pop-up event! We gave hundreds of essential vaccines and helped dozens of pets get microchipped to ensure they have a safe path back home should they ever get lost. It's such a privilege to get to provide this service for our community, and it warms our hearts to see all of these happy faces come out.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make this event possible, and a very special thank you to Petco Love for providing FREE vaccines for all of these families! ❤️

We are hosting another pop-up Wellness Clinic in late October — registration is now open, but these clinics fill up fast, so be sure to reserve your spot right away at spcawake.org/wellness 🐾

10/01/2024

🚨 HURRICANE HELENE EMERGENCY RESPONSE: Infrastructure damage and electricity outages have left animal shelters in western NC in an emergency situation. These shelters are without power, surrounded by flooding, and losing refrigerated medicines by the minute. It's all hands on deck to make sure every animal is evacuated to safety. With the help of our friends at BISSELL Pet Foundation, we just drove out to meet an emergency evacuation plane on the tarmac at the Winston-Salem airport.

We opened every open door in our facility and available foster home to displaced pets from the Asheville Humane Society. Every cat and dog was immediately greeted with treats, toys, warm dry beds, and the care of our veterinary team. They are in amazingly good spirits after the chaos of the past several days.

So... please join us in welcoming our newest friends to SPCA Wake ❤️

It's been incredibly moving to help get these pets out of harm's way and support our friends at the western NC shelters. Our friends at Asheville Humane Society told the transporters they were overwhelmed with gratitude for the support — and we want to pass that gratitude directly onto you because this effort was only possible because of your generous support. We cannot thank you enough.

Right now, we are working hard to help route supplies to counties in need as well as take in more western NC shelter animals over the coming days/weeks. We have supply requests from McDowell, Mitchell, York and Gaston counties, among others. There are more requests coming in as relief efforts are moving along and assessing the damage. Right now transportation is the biggest challenge to getting the supplies into the areas that are cut off.

For those who would like to help:
📦 If you'd like to make a donation of items, please direct those to a distribution center that has transport plans to Western NC in place. *SPCA Wake is NOT currently a drop-off location for emergency supplies* Please refer to this list of nearby locations: tinyurl.com/4x8be4w3
❤️ If you'd like to make a monetary donation to help support these efforts and help the displaced pets in our care, please donate at spcawake.org/donate

We will continue to share updates on our social media. Thank you all for helping support the pets and people affected by Helene 🙏

It's officially Autumn and with the cool weather finally coming in it's the perfect time to adopt a new cuddle buddy, like bestest boy Briggs!

If you're a first time dog owner looking for a chill and friendly BFF, or an outgoing family looking for a happy-go-lucky companion that'll play fetch and offer limitless cuddles, Briggs might just be the perfect fit. Since arriving at the SPCA, we've seen that Briggs is dog-friendly, kid-friendly (he's met kids as young as 3 and done fantastic), and adjustable to different environments. He's just as happy living it up on walks as he is spending the day playing couch potato. He's food-motivated which has made training easy, and he's very gentle when accepting treats. He's truly just a calm and loving soul, eager to please and eager for a home.

We've got our fingers crossed that Briggs' forever family is just right around the corner. If you think his forever family may be you, or if you'd like to learn more, head over to spcawake.org/dogs to learn more! 🥰

If anyone knows any children’s book authors, be sure to send this story their way and tell them we said “you’re welcome” for the free idea 📝

Once upon a time, a man was walking up to his local bank when he heard tiny mewing somewhere nearby. He followed the sounds and discovered this sopping wet, shivering, terrified little kitten at the bottom of a storm drain. And the kitten wasn’t alone — he was joined in his pickle by a little toad that had climbed on his back!

The man grabbed the little kitten (now named Frog, of course), freed the toad, and abandoned his bank errand. He sheltered the kitten in a cardboard box with a dry towel and went out in search of help.

As soon as Frog arrived at the SPCA, he was bathed and dried, and offered a meal. Meanwhile across town, his toad friend is surely croaking away happily in a pond somewhere, probably reunited with his very grateful wife and kids.

Frog is now pending adoption, and in the next couple of days, he should be living happily ever after with his new family. 📖✨🌈

PS — a huge and special thank you to that good Samaritan for following his ears and saving two little lives at once! We are so grateful they are both safe and sound. This awesome tale of unlikely friendship is definitely not one we will soon forget 🐱🐸

09/05/2024

Pam hates when humans call her “a cat” because she’s so much more than that. She’s a fashionista, an icon, a trendsetter. Her style may be a bit experimental, her outfits a little bit “out there”, but she’s really just ahead of the curve. Her prediction for the next fall fashion trend? No pants! 👖👎

Prior to coming to the SPCA, Pam spent her entire life living in a dog crate stacked on top of other dog crates containing other cats. The stress, plus a flea infestation, resulted in her losing most of the fur on her back legs. Pam's past has made her a little hesitant about new environments and people, but once she gets comfortable, she’s quick to strut her stuff and show you that nothing could break her resilient spirit. Pam has really blossomed in a foster home, doing zoomies and playing with laser pointers and nuzzling her favorite humans. She’s even had the pleasure of discovering her new favorite runway – her doggie foster sister. She loves walking on top of her while she’s laying down, and even making biscuits in her fur 👩‍🍳

Right now, we’re not sure if Pam will don pants again in the future or if she plans to rock this style for life. But one thing's for sure — she is beautiful inside and out 🥰 She just needs a forever family that sees it too. If you think that you might be that forever family for Pam, please fill out our adoption survey at spcawake.org 🐾

Remember — all adoption fees are 50% off right now for ! 🥳 Come find a new friend and leave behind an empty kennel during this lifesaving adoption event! ❤️

❤️ spotlight ❤️ Under synonyms for "gentle" you'll find a grey-muzzled boy named Virgil.

This sweet senior man has done well with people of all ages, although he can be anxious with strangers at first. He's friendly, affectionate, and a good friend to both the humans and canines he meets. He's even done well when meeting cats, respecting their boundaries and letting them come to him at their own pace. He's a gentle soul, eager to please and eager for love.

Most people probably know that seniors are less likely to be adopted. Despite how wonderful he is, Virgil is often overlooked for the younger dogs and puppies. He's has had the misfortune of finding himself in and out of the shelter system ever since 2022 when he was caught in a house fire and had to be given up to the shelter. Virgil understandably has some anxiety about being left alone. He can start to pace, whimper, and scratch at doors. He does better if he's crated rather than left to his own devices, but he's much happier when he knows someone is nearby. He'd really love a home where someone's usually around to keep him company and give him the occasional head scratches. In return, he'll give you his whole heart, his golden years, and his endless devotion.

Remember all adoption fees are 50% off through Saturday, so come bring home a new friend, leave an empty kennel behind, and save a life for 🙏 If you think you might like to give this senior guy his second chance, please visit spcawake.org/dogs ❤️

Do you ever get a papercut, or something in your eye, and spend the rest of the day complaining about it? ...Let us all be humbled by Lizard

Aka Lizzie.

Lizzie was abandoned on a bench with her three newborn puppies. When they were discovered, the finder only saw Lizzie at first — tail tucked and shaking like a leaf. It took a few minutes to realize that 1) she had three sleeping newborns tucked beneath her body and 2) her back leg was broken in half.

It turned out that Lizzie's femur had snapped, and her hip was injured as well. Not only had she been raising her 2-day-old puppies on a broken leg, she had given birth with it.

Unfortunately, Lizzie couldn't have leg surgery while she was still nursing her puppies — separating her from the tiny babies and performing the surgery too soon could put their fragile lives at risk. So we had to do everything possible to stabilize her leg and keep her comfortable for the next few weeks until it was safe to admit her to the hospital.

This girl... This girl has been powering through probably the hardest time in her life (by far), but through sheer will and without hesitation, Lizzie has put her own welfare aside and managed to raise three perfect, plump, happy, healthy little puppies.

The time has now come for Lizzie's surgery — her leg will be amputated this week. And after all she's survived, we hope a swift adoption will bring nothing but all of life's sweetest spoils.

Lizzie (Lizard) and her three puppies Newt, Gecko, and Chameleon are all about to go up for adoption. If you're interested in adopting one (or two) of the members of this very special family, please keep an eye on our website at spcawake.org/dogs — as long as you promise to give them the whole world, because they deserve it ❤️

Here's a well-deserved SPOTLIGHT 🔦 Gunther tricked us! He's been acting like a wild child at the shelter, so we thought, well, he's just a wild child. And then we got him in a foster home and he settled right in — Gunther out of the shelter is a completely different dog 🤪

Although we make every effort to make the shelter comfortable, it takes a toll on animals who are here for a long time (like Gunther). But as soon as Gunther gets into a home environment that feels safe, secure, and stable, the real Gunther is revealed, and he is a Good Boy. 🥰

This being the final week of , we need your help to get the word out, because we've all been sleeping on this fella!

Here's what Gunter's most recent foster had to say:
"Gunther is sooo sweet and goofy. I’ve never seen a dog bury toys before, let alone do so so meticulously — there are hidden stashes all over the yard now (we should look into training him with Easter eggs). Working on not laying down during walks, ending his current hunger strike (must’ve heard us saying he needs to lose a few lbs.), and will hopefully introduce him to [foster's other dog] this week!"

Gunther is just under 3 years old. He's met and gotten along beautifully with a number of dogs here at the shelter (like former longtimer Roo, featured in these pictures). He's a fast learner, a toy planter, a TV watcher, and power-pouter. He's a best friend waiting to happen, and he couldn't be more up for the job 💘

Gunther's adoption fee is 50% OFF this week — to learn more and help 🥳 please visit our website at spcawake.org/dogs 🐾🩷

It's the FINAL WEEK of ! How many pets will get adopted? How many kennels will be opened up to save another life? We can't wait to find out — and we can't wait to see many of you at our Pet Adoption Center! 🎉

All adoption fees are 50% off until 9/7! We've got cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, bunnies, guinea pigs, gerbils — even a ball python, a gecko, a bearded dragon, and a parakeet who need good homes! 🐱🐶🐹🐰🐭🐍🦜🦎
There is really something for everyone — even if you just want to visit for some snuggles.
You can check out all of the pets currently for adoption at spcawake.org 😍

We also want to sincerely and wholeheartedly thank everyone who has adopted so far this month. Some may know, some may not, but 2024 has been a really difficult year for animal shelters. Adoptions have been slowing down, pets have been waiting much longer for homes, the entire country has been facing a shelter capacity crisis. This year's Clear the Shelters means so much to us and TRULY makes a lifesaving difference for shelter pets, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has helped out or welcomed a pet into their home. ❤️

🔥✂️ Welcome to the Battle of the Bunny Beards and Hare-cuts ✂️🔥

First up is Lucy, who's sporting a truly thought-provoking Neck Beard.

But Lucy's got some stiff competition in our next contender, Norman — Norman longs for the early 2000s. He still listens to a Walkman and is trying really hard to bring back Frosted Tips.

Third in the lineup is Velour with a very fine attempt at a Fu Manchu... we think. Maybe a Handlebar. Either way, he still gets a carrot for participation.

Lastly we see Cinnabun rocking the traditional "rabbit out of a hat" motif 🎩🐇 A timeless classic. It might not be enough to outdo the competition but we think it is very mindful, very demure. A respectable effort.

So who is your choice for champion? 🏆 Let us know in the comments! And if you're interested in meeting/adopting one of these competitors, visit spcawake.org/smallpets 🐾
