Orson bypassed Fabio’s barricade, much to Fabio’s displeasure. The fact that Fabio didn’t attack Orson really shows the progress Orson has made in his campaign to be Fabio’s friend. As much as I love Orson’s gentle spirit and his desire to befriend “Nightmare Orson” I made him get down. If we p**s off Ol’ A**s eyes I’ll have to sleep with one eye open.

Jacklyn Barefoot of Petopia Puppies is an unethical backyard breeder. If for some reason you don’t want to adopt, you must do the work to find a good breeder.

Here’s how:
Every breed will have a CHIC listing that will tell you what health tests should be completed. Make sure BOTH parents have the recommended tests. One test does not cut it. It’s easy to google the recommended tests.

Ask about titles. A serious breeder who’s committed to the betterment of the breed will have titles, such as confirmation, rally, obedience, or hunting.

They will not sell you a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.

They should offer a health guarantee.

Mom must be at least 2 years old. She should not be having more than 1 litter a year. She should whelp no more than 4 litters in her lifetime although some say up to 6 is fine.

Good breeders will have a waiting list. Social media is not the best place to find a breeder. Go to dog shows & obedience events. Check out breed clubs.

A good breeder will require you come to them if you ever need to rehome your dog.

Puppies and parents should receive age appropriate vaccines & prevention. Your puppy will have at least 1 DHPP vaccine.

There will be rules about breeding your dog in the contract.

You should meet the mom & see where everyone lives. The puppies & mom should be healthy, happy, clean, & have their nails trimmed. Unless you’re looking for a livestock guardian the dogs should live inside the home.

The more breeds offered by a breeder the less likely this is a good breeder.

The breeder should ask you questions too to make sure it’s a good fit.

YOU MUST EMOTIONALLY PREPARE YOURSELF TO REJECT A BREEDER AND NOT BUY A PUPPY. If the breeder doesn’t meet these standards saying no can be extremely difficult. If you’re uncomfortable saying no to a breeder it’s fine to give a white lie. Anything is better than supporting animal cruelty. (And no, you wouldn’t be “saving” the puppy by purchasing it from a bad breeder. They’ll give dogs they can’t sell to rescues. If they keep selling, they’ll keep breeding.)

I always recommend adopting, but do your research if you decide to buy.

Our second to last foster puppy got adopted yesterday so Tricky Ricky moved out of the puppy motel and into the house. Fabio is FURIOUS.

Tricky Ricky is being a perfect angel. He knocked it out of the park with his first night in the crate and is being very respectful of Fabio’s boundaries but just knowing there’s a new dog is in the house is infuriating for Fabio. If it was up to him Jaqweenie and Orson would be long gone.

Tricky Ricky is a pitbull mix and is 40 lbs at about 5 months old. He’s available for adoption from . Apply to adopt this sweet boy!

When you buy from pet stores like this, dogs like this die. A puppy mill breeder has been allowed to open a storefront in downtown Raleigh in spite of recently being arrested (see last picture), and living in unsanitary conditions with a roach infestation and constant second hand smoke. Due to her mental illness and improper living conditions she is in the process of losing her children but NC Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler thought it would be a good idea to give her an operating license for Petopia.
Jacklyn Barefoot is a great example of how spending an insane amount of money for a dog doesn’t mean it’s coming from a healthy environment. I want to be clear, unlike a lot of people in rescue, I don’t think buying from a breeder is inherently bad. (I draw the line at brachiocephalic dogs. I consider it to be unethical to breed dogs that can’t breathe properly. If you want a dog like a Pug or a French Bulldog the only ethical way to get one is adoption.)

Of course I’d prefer everyone rescue given the number of homeless dogs euthanized every year. But if you want to buy from a breeder it is imperative that you buy from a reputable one, and that means putting in the work to find a good breeder. I’d also recommend donating money to a rescue if you decide to buy.

Doodle breeders like Jacklyn Barefoot aren’t breeding for health or temperament. They are breeding for looks with the main goal being profit with minimal health testing. I saw that she boasts that each litter has new and unique characteristics. That is the exact opposite of what a good breeder is looking for. You want to know what you’re getting to ensure happy, healthy puppies.

Wiggle Wand Wednesday AND a snow day!! All the dogs were today. Everyone went potty including Fabio. (I put hand warmers in his pockets to keep him toasty.)

The tan fellow Tricky Ricky is still looking for a home. He’s such a nice guy I just know he’ll make someone an amazing pet. Apply to adopt him at . The puppies are seriously tough cookies. I only put jackets on them for walks because otherwise they tear them to shreds, but they don’t seem to mind being out in the cold naked. Of course all they have to do to get warm is to walk in their dog door to sit in the heat. Plus Tricky is on the chubby side.

Whenever I take Jaqweenie out in public he runs around posing for pictures. This guy is no dummy! He knows he gets a treat when I take his picture!

Please take a moment to sign the petition in my bio. We are trying to stop a lady who runs a puppy mill breeding doodles from opening up a storefront in my hometown of Raleigh. Aside from the obvious issue with puppy mills this lady is mentally unstable. She was recently arrested for communicating threats.

is completely untrustworthy. She was in the process of adopting a dog from the Wake County Animal Shelter and tried to claim it was the first in a partnership with the shelter to foster and adopt out dogs. This attempt to pretend to be an ethical person and gain legitimacy in the community failed when the shelter learned of her dishonesty and canceled the adoption. She wrote she was hoping the dog would be Petopia’s “first official foster from a local high kill shelter looking for his forever home.” You can’t adopt dogs with the intention of not keeping them! It’s not that hard to become a foster! Of course I doubt most rescues would work with someone whose home is roach infested.

Ol’ Scrungle goes outside! I was extremely worried about how Fabio would manage the cold weather. I anticipated p**p strikes and accidents inside, but he’s been such a trooper. As long as I bundle him up, he’s fine bumping around the yard for 5 minutes, even in freezing temperatures.

He’s so talented at going potty immediately. I couldn’t be prouder of this boy. He’s truly ! 💪 Of course I put him on a heating pad as soon as we get inside.

Would y’all like to see video footage of him bumping around the yard?

I know it looks like Tricky Ricky is about to bite Orson’s butt in the second picture but he is an angel baby and would never!

Did you know Orson has something in common with these puppies?! They’re all pitbull mixes! The puppies are 75% pitbull while Orson is 11%.

Please help this jerk horse Bub. She’s been bullying Nugget, a disabled goat. Bub needs to either be an only horse or needs to be with larger horses that will put her in her place.

What’s Bubs deal you ask?! Let me tell you! Bub was purchased by a lady to be a riding horse for her daughter. She was told Bub was in her teens but she might be older. Unfortunately Bub ended up having medical problems so the lady got rid of her. Her vet asked my lovely neighbor Frances to adopt her because Frances has a history of helping unwanted animals.

Frances discovered that Bub has Cushing’s and just needs a daily pill to stay healthy. This costs about $4/day. Bub has been putting on weight and getting healthy, but unfortunately that means her true personality is coming out. Turns out Bub is a bully. She’s been harassing Frances’ menagerie, especially sweet Nugget. We can’t have that!

Bub is a good horse aside from being such a jerk. (You know I love the jerks!) Can you help me find her a home? I’m not familiar with horse rescues and would appreciate recommendations. Or if you’re in the market for a jerk horse, look no further!

Nothing beats this wrinkly t**h! If you’re wondering why Fabio is furious in the last picture it has nothing to do with the goggly eyes. He’s upset because he became aware of Orson’s presence. With how much Fabio hates other dogs sometimes I wonder if he’s even aware that he’s a dog.

This snow is BS! I feel bad for everyone who ran out and bought sleds. 😣

As y’all know, Orson always does his best but wearing hats isn’t his strong suit. Maybe he doesn’t know it’s supposed to go on top of his head? I ran into Orson’s rescuer () yesterday and I could tell she’s so proud of him and all the progress he’s made.

Good news about Jaqweenie’s nose bump! The fungal kerion has healed and now we just wait for the fur to grow back. 💪

Jaqweenie got his Lyme disease vaccine. I’m terrified of Lyme disease because it destroyed my health. I was infected when I was 15 and wasn’t diagnosed until a decade later. I was so sick I dropped to 110 lbs. (I’m close to 140 now.) I had night sweats, joint pain, brain fog, profound fatigue, thyroid problems and was even lactating. When I finally found doctors who took me seriously and didn’t just assume it was anorexia or attention seeking they kept thinking I had a brain tumor. At that point I would have been relieved to have a brain tumor!

It was really difficult to find treatment and insurance actively tried to prevent me from getting treatment. My dad had to shell out THOUSANDS of dollars a month to Dr Jemsek in DC for half a year of IV antibiotics. That seemed to treat the Lyme disease leaving me with lasting damage from my decade long infection and a terrible case of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth from all the antibiotics. Now I manage my SIBO and other symptoms. I’m super grateful to be at a point where I can have a relatively normal life. Even though I get tired very easily and have to be extremely health conscious I’m so happy to have gotten to this point.

All that is to say, if you’re having health problems don’t let doctors, friends, or family convince you it’s in your head. You know your body best. Keep looking until you find a doctor who is willing to help.

Today the fellows are wearing their Nice Guy Club bandanas in honor of ultimate nice guy Jimmy Carter.

Years ago I read President Carter’s book “Peace Not Apartheid” about Israel, Palestine, Egypt, and how to achieve peace in the Middle East. At the time it was not a popular sentiment that Israel was doing anything wrong and I was struck by how nuanced his book was. It didn’t seem to include any pandering and was clearly written by a thoughtful guy who wanted what was best for all involved parties. That began my one sided love affair with Jimmy Carter. The more I learn about him, the more I appreciate him.

I know Jimmy Carter had a long and wonderful life, but I’m sad that he is no longer in our world. We live in a better world because of President Carter and he will be sorely missed.

*Fabio isn’t in the Nice Guy Club. He’s a founding member of the Grumpy Gus Club but in the spirit of inclusivity please enjoy his picture at the end.

It’s Orson’s special day! 🪄

Can you tell how pleased he is to be the chosen dog to go to the hardware store? Usually I bring Jaqweenie because Orson isn’t exactly known for his good behavior. But since he’s gotten on the right dose of Prozac he’s been doing pretty well so I thought I’d give him a shot. He did pretty darn well with minimal Borsoning. Of course I have to keep a close eye on him and he did bark at one person who startled him, but I was proud of him. You know Orson always does his best!

For those of you who aren’t aware of his wiggle wand, one of Orson’s front legs has nerve damage and doesn’t work properly. It’s much skinnier than his other leg and he can’t trust it to hold him up, so you’ll often see him putting all his weight on his other leg with the wiggle wand just dangling.

Did you know that Jaqweenie is BOTH fully baby and fully man? If you’ve heard of the holy trinity you’ll understand the concept. Here he is more fully baby because babies shouldn’t have to ride in crates in the car. He also doesn’t think babies should wear leashes. 🥺

Poor Clouds has been through the wringer! I gave her a quarter of a Benadryl before driving her to the vet to make sure her airway didn't close up on the ride over. The vet gave her a shot of Benadryl and steroids for the swelling. If you'd like to contribute to her medical care for you can donate to Hope Animal Rescue .
