Lots of summer cookouts end with cool, refreshing watermelon. Watermelon is fun for pets; the high water content hydrates them and the glucose gives them energy. However, pets often swallow the seeds or eat the rind, and both can block the GI tract. To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat. πΆππΎ

For July, our employee pet of the month feature goes to our vet assistant Kat's cat, Magnolia! Magnolia, a.k.a "Momma" found her way into Kat's life last year when she showed up at the back door of a family friend's house. Her friend knew it would be a lot of responsibility to take on a new pet, and Kat hadn't had a cat of her own for a while so she offered to take her in. She was estimated to be a little under a year old at the time and is now approximately 1.5 years. She also had an upper respiratory infection that she was treated for by our wonderful doctors here at VCA Durant. Kat fell in love with her as soon as she met her. It was very easy to as she is one of the sweetest cats out there. With an added surprise, Miss Magnolia came with more than just herself β she was an expectant mother to be (hence her nickname)! She ended up giving birth to five precious kittens at Kat's house in the middle of the night shortly after she took her in. Kat stayed up all night with her to make sure it was a smooth delivery and all the kittens were safe. She was an amazing mother from day one and always cared for her babies. All of her kittens went to great homes and Kat ended up keeping one who's now known as Marie a.k.a "KitKat." Our very own Dr. Musgrave also found it within her heart to expand her pet family and took on one of the kittens as well, who's now known as Detective Popcorn a.k.a "Jiffy." The cat distribution system sure does have a funny way of working out! Magnolia loves having one of her babies to love on and they spend lots of time playing, grooming each other, and cuddling. She also lives with Kat's two dogs, Domino and Zero. She is very trusting and comfortable with Domino since he was there the whole time she raised the kittens. She is still adjusting to Zero as he's a puppy but she is very patient with him. We are glad to welcome you and your babies to the VCA Durant Road family, Magnolia! π»πΎβ€
July's boarding pet spotlight goes to this dynamic duo, Dixie and Diesel! They are a 7-year-old brother and sister pair ππ who have been coming to board at VCA Durant Road since 2018. They are Rhodesian Ridgebacks and have a very unique appearance with the ridge of hair along their backs, hence their name. Don't let their size fool you as Dixie and Diesel have always been gentle giants. They are a very sweet pair and love getting pets when they are not busy napping π€ on their cots. The duo may look a lot alike but have completely separate personalities. Diesel may look tough, but according to his owners he's their big baby! He is afraid of everything and can be spooked very easily π». One time he walked into the family's laundry room, froze, then backed out slowly. Turns out there was a piece of thread on the ground that he didn't want to walk by π . On the other hand, Dixie is fearless and as smart as they come but she will eat any and everything. Her family has had a hard time stopping her from jumping on the counters to retrieve food. They even tried lining the countertops with mousetraps and that wouldn't even deter her. She set one off, observed how they work, then carefully jumped to the counter and slowly moved each trap sideways allowing her to get what she wanted. Talk about determination! Her owners gave up at that point claiming she's smarter than them π. Dixie is also the cuddlebug in the family who loves blankets and stuffed animals. Both pups love to play with each other and love boarding together in the same run π. We always look forward to having Dixie and Diesel stay with us and are glad to get to know such a wonderful pair!

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, itβs extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when theyβre around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

It's meet the team Monday yet again! This month we are featuring our Pet Resort Assistant, Logan. Logan has been working with us since May 2022. She grew up right down the road and VCA Durant Road was her family's primary vet. Once she got to college and decided she would like to pursue a professional career working with animals, she inquired about any job openings and landed a position working in our Pet Resort. She is a great asset helping out our team during the busy summer and winter months when she is on school breaks. She is currently a rising senior at NC State University working on completing her degree in Poultry and Life Sciences. Logan states that she has always had a love for pets and grew up with a house full of pets such as dogs, cats, and a hamster. She enjoys working here as she is able to dote and love on other's pets and loves getting to know all of their unique quirks. The passion she has for animals has led to her desire of becoming a veterinary technician after graduating college. Personal pets she has in her own life are her cat named Bleu that was found as a barn kitty, and her roommate's dog, May, who loves hunting and going tailgating at NC State games. She also has a deep love for horses and practiced English riding for 11 years. We appreciate all of your hard work, Logan, and are glad to have you as part of our team!
Smile, it's Saturday! Happy weekend, everyone! ππΎπ
Heatstroke is no joke! Make sure to keep your pets properly cool and hydrated to avoid overheating.
Our daycare feature for the month of July is this striking, water-loving girl, Rie! Rie is a five-year-old German Shepherd who has been coming to VCA Durant Road since her puppy days. She first temp-tested as a four-month-old puppy πΆ and has been loving daycare ever since! Some of her favorite things to do in daycare are play in the pool and "talk" to every person and dog that walks by. Some fun facts about Rie β she's named after Marie Curie, the scientist, because she's such a smart girl and does great with her commands. She may be queen of the pool in daycare, and she does love water π¦, but only if it's less than six inches! Luckily she doesn't have to worry about the deep end while playing in our pools here. At home she loves to chase the bunnies in the yard and make a game of it. She is such an energetic girl, and we have loved watching her grow and thrive here at Camp Durant! π
