Meet our winter salad mix. It’s packed full of delicious brassicas. Who says you can’t have bright, beautiful veggies in the winter??? The star of the show is tokyo bekana. We add in some tatsoi, mizuna and top of off with purple mustard in the ruby streaks variety. We will only have it for two weeks and then we transition to our spring mix so head to the tomorrow between 9-12 to get you some!

CUTWORMS ugh!!! We have been busy (well, mostly Charlotte) hunting for cutworms in the top 1 inch of the soil in our high tunnel. They can do some serious damage - wiped out about 120 bok choy plants in 4 days. We are trying aluminum collars on our second planting to see if we can keep them from killing this round. Other no-till growers, what do you do for cutworms?

Lots of work still happens in the garden during the winter. One of our tasks now is pruning our perennial plants in the pollinator garden and food forest to prepare them for spring renewal. The goal of winter pruning is to bring lots of new growth once the plants break dormancy. Here we pruned our camellia sinensis (tea bushes) so they will put off lots more new growth this year. The new tips are what is harvested to make tea.

Giving thanks on this day for the land on which we grow food that nourishes our bodies. Thank you to those that stewarded this land first. The Lumbee, Skahruhreh/Tuscarora and the Manu: Yį Įsuwa.

We also give thanks for the funny-shaped, cracked, funky vegetables that come out of our garden. They might not be what we’re all used to seeing in the grocery store but they sure taste great! And they deserve to be highlighted on our table today just as any other food does. 😋

May today be a day you all give thanks for the strange, irregular, different, diverse, beautiful people in this world. Our differences make us stronger and wonderful! 🌍 💗
