Happy Fri-YAY form our little friend Oreo! We hope you have a safe Memorial Day weekend.
Looks like word is out that today is World Turtle Day...check out this cute wild turtle buddy we found enjoying a refreshing swim in one of our daycare pools! (Don't worry, we kept it safely separated from the dogs and sanitized the pool after.)
This time of year it is common to see turtles being more active because they have woken up from brumation (similar to hibernation) and are searching for food, for mates, and for good basking spots. In their travels turtles will often cross roads, which can be dangerous for them. It's a good idea to keep an eye out for them in your yard and on your walks so you can prevent your pets from harming them.
Did you know that NC State College of Veterinary Medicine has a Turtle Rescue Team that sees over 500 wild turtles, reptiles, and amphibians each year? The program is run by volunteer veterinary students, and their goal is to heal and release as many as they can. Check them out on the web at https://cvm.ncsu.edu/outreach/resources/turtle-rescue-team/ for information about what to do if you find a turtle in the road.
If you find a wild turtle that needs help you can contact them by email at [email protected] or by phone at 919-397-9675.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month. Did you know that our furry family members can suffer from arthritis (AKA osteoarthritis) like humans? It is actually very common...up to 40% of cats and dogs under 8 have arthritis pain, and up to 90% of dogs over 8 and cats over 12 years old.
What causes arthritis in our pets? Similar to humans, it's often a result of wear and tear on the joints over time. Factors like developmental issues, previous injuries, and obesity can also contribute to the development of arthritis.
So, how might you know that your cat or dog may be experiencing arthritis? Look for symptoms like walking and moving stiffly, limping after exercise, lagging behind on walks, difficulty jumping and using stairs, and being slow to get up. You may even notice that your pet is more grumpy than normal.
Call us at 919-948-4210 for an appointment with Dr. Simmons or Dr. Bejat to discuss how we can help relieve your pet's arthritis pain. There are many different treatment options available to help your pet feel better, and we can help you choose the right one for your cat or dog. ๐ฉบ๐๐

Today we honor National Rescue Dog Day to bring awareness to all the dogs living in shelters, just waiting to meet their new owners and leave for their forever homes. Most shelters and rescues across the nation are overflowing with amazing pets in need of homes. If you are ready to welcome a new furry four-legged family member, consider adoption and check out your local shelters and rescues.
Beach weather is here, and many of our canine companions love adventuring in the surf and the sand just as much as we do! Here are some tips to keep your pet safe so you can all have fun.
๐ Check the rules before you go. Some beaches have time or date restrictions for when dogs can play, and some do not allow dogs at all.
๐งMake sure your pup has access to plenty of fresh water and do your best to keep them from drinking seawater.
๐ Provide your dog with a shady spot to get out of the hot sun and rest. Some pups get overexcited and don't know when it's time to chill, so you may have to help them make that choice.
๐กWatch closely for signs of heatstroke - rapid panting, increased heart rate, excessive drooling, dry/bright red gums and tongue - even in the cooler parts of the day.
๐พ Protect their paws. The sand can get hot enough to burn their paw pads, and the surf can wash up dangerous things like broken seashells, glass, and jellyfish.
๐ Keep an eye on the water conditions...rough waves and strong currents can make swimming dangerous for your dog.
๐ Do your best to keep your pup from eating sand or items they find on the beach. These things could cause a range of issues from vomiting and diarrhea to life-threatening bowel obstruction.
๐ฆ Rinse your dog at the end of the day. This can help protect them from ingesting sand and salt as they try to lick themselves clean, and it can help keep their skin from becoming irritated.
๐งโโ๏ธ Seek veterinary care right away if you think your pet is showing signs of heatstroke or other symptoms of illness or injury.
Rain, rain go away....but maybe not for all the dogs! Have you ever wondered why some dogs love going for walks in the rain and others hate it?
Rain can be fun and enriching for some dogs because it stirs up and intensifies scents that normally lie dormant. It also changes the feel and texture of their environment, which can trigger their natural instincts like digging, hunting, and playing.
In the other camp are dogs who don't like the sensation of raindrops falling on them and the feeling of wet paws and fur. The sound of rain and thunder can also be overwhelming for them because their sense of hearing is much more sensitive than ours is.
So which describes your dog best...are they a rain lover or a rain hater?

Vaccinations can protect your pets from many potentially deadly illnesses like parvovirus in dogs and panleukopenia in cats. To provide the best protection, puppies and kittens should ideally go through a vaccine booster series starting at about 8 weeks through 16-20 weeks of age. After that, many vaccine boosters need to be given annually.
When born, puppies and kittens have some antibodies that carry over from their mothers but those naturally decline between 6 and 16 weeks of age. As those maternal antibodies fall, we start to give initial vaccines and continue vaccine boosters to activate their immune systems and help them build their own antibodies and immunity. Once the initial series is complete, boosters are given every 1-3 years depending on the vaccine.
We'd love to help protect your pet from viruses that can be prevented with regular vaccination. Call us at 919-948-4210 to start your puppy or kitten's vaccine series, or to schedule their adult boosters.
Does your dog or cat need their vaccines updated? Do they need a spay, neuter, or dental cleaning? We are here for you! Give us a call today to schedule...we may even have some same-day or same-week openings.
Sending you a big Happy Fri-YAY from the Raleigh Community Animal Hospital team and a few of our adorable patients. We hope you and your pets have a great time out in the sunshine this weekend!

๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐พ๐ชปSpring has sprung and it is time to revive and restart your garden, so it is important to know that some plants are toxic to pets. This list is not all-inclusive, so be sure to look up any new plants to make sure they're safe for your furry family members.
Symptoms of ingesting a toxic plant vary widely, but some common signs are lethargy, vomiting, drooling, nausea, and diarrhea. If you think your pet may have ingested a toxic plant, call us at 919-948-4210. If we are closed please contact your local UrgentVet or emergency clinic.
Fleas and ticks not only make our cats and dogs itchy and uncomfortable, they can also cause serious health conditions. The best defense for your pet is year-round prescription flea and tick prevention. Call us at 919-948-4210 to schedule an appointment to talk to a veterinarian about the right medication for your pet.
Why should you come see us for prescription flea and tick medication?
๐พ Many over-the-counter flea and tick medications provide poor protection and may also contain ingredients that are harmful to your pet.
๐พ Fleas cause skin irritation, allergic dermatitis, skin infections, tapeworms and bartonellosis (cat scratch disease).
๐พ Ticks transmit Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, cytauxzoonosis and other infections.
๐พ Heavy infestations of fleas and ticks can cause life-threatening blood loss and anemia.
๐พ Prescription flea and tick preventatives come in several forms, from chewable pills to topical solutions, and we can help you choose the best one for your pet.
Thank you Alley Cats and Angels of NC! We love working with you and our community...and we'll never pass up an opportunity to snuggle KITTENS!! ๐ป

April may be National Heartworm Awareness Month, but awareness and prevention are important year-round. Here are a few tips to help you stay on top of your pet's heartworm prevention.
๐ฉบWork with your veterinarian to choose a prevention that works for your pets' lifestyle and is easy to give.
๐Test yearly for heartworms. All it takes is a few drops of blood.
๐Keep your pet on prevention all year. In our area, mosquitos can be active even in the winter.
๐ฆMosquitos can easily find their way indoors, so be sure that your indoor-only pets are on prevention, too.
๐ถ๐ธIf you have multiple pets on prevention, keep them on the same schedule.
๐
Set a calendar reminder and give your pets' prevention on the same day each month.
โณBe sure to order your pets' prevention before you run out. You can do that with ease at the clinic through our app or by calling us. You can also use our online pharmacy to have it delivered right to your door.
Give us a call at 919-948-4210 today to schedule your pet's appointment!

For today's Fri-YAY post, we'd like to support our friends at the SPCA of Wake County. They, like so many other shelters across the country, are incredibly full with sweet, lovable, adoptable dogs and cats. If you've been thinking of welcoming a new furry family member, go check them out! Any dog adopted between now and the end of April will go home with their very own pair of soft, snuggly, adorable DUCKIE PAJAMAS! Adopt a pup today...they'd love to have a pajama party with their new family. ๐ค๐
Many pets can feel nervous when they come to the vet, so we strive to make our clinic a less scary experience. Lucky for us, many of our patients' love languages are delicious treats! So far their faves are peanut butter for dogs and Churu for cats. Here are a few of our friends enjoying a little snacky-snack while we take care of them. Forgive the blurry photos, snack shots are action shots! ๐
We also have an exam room that is peanut butter-free for people with allergies. Just let our team know if that room works better for you and your family, and we'll offer your pup some delicious squeeze cheese instead. โค๏ธ

Remember, any food that isn't a regular part of a pet's dietโespecially fatty foods like ham, gravy, dark turkey meat, and turkey skinโcan cause issues ranging from diarrhea to pancreatitis, and some human foods can even poison your pets. Side dishes like stuffing and mashed potatoes may contain garlic, onion, leeks, or chives that are toxic to dogs and cats. Desserts may include dangerous-to-pets ingredients like chocolate, raisins, currants, and Xylitol (a popular sugar substitute)โso reserve the sweet stuff for humans only. Plus, chewing and swallowing bones may cause a life-threatening obstruction that requires emergency surgery.
Taking care of your furry friends is our top priority! Bring your pets to our clinic for a check-up, call us at 919-948-4210.
Did you know that Siamese cat coloring actually comes from albinism? Their unique coloring is believed to be the result of a mutation from albino genes. They are sometimes referred to as โtemperature sensitive albinosโ due to their color developing after exposure to lower temperatures and being the darkest on their extremities. Most modern Siamese cats are not considered true albinos and the full mutation is recessive within the breed, which is characterized by an all-white coat with blue eyes. We love your pets as much as you do and want to keep them as healthy as possible! Contact us at 919-948-4210 to schedule an appointment.
You're in luck! We're EXTENDING our Dental Special till next Friday, Sept 15th. Receive $50 OFF your Pets Dental Cleaning. Contact us for an appointment.
