Roughly 12 years old, around 17 hands (haven’t taped her yet), and is believed to be half Belgian Draft and half Quarter Horse. Rescued from a junk yard sometime last year but hasn’t had much attention or training in the last 6+ months. Excited to see this beautiful girls transformation and see what we can do together.

Nikita, a prior Grand Prix jumper, got her first massage today. She was retired early due to an injury and can no longer be ridden. Sports Massage Therapy isn’t strictly for athletes. Horses, just like us humans, get older, get out of shape, can move or do something that tweaks a muscle and causes pain/ discomfort. Sports Massage Therapy can help horses or all disciplines and all activity levels.

Miss La Reina got her first massage today. She is a Gypsy Vanner, 18 years young and has what is called Chronic Progressive Lymphedema (CPL). It’s a disease in some draft breeds that resembles elephantiasis verrucosa nostra in humans. Sadly there is no cure. The best option for horses with CPL is to manage the signs and slow progression of the disease with careful management and supportive therapy.

Massages are one of those supportive therapies and can help improve circulation, release pain blocking endorphins and can aid in slowing the progression of CPL along with daily exercise and other regimens.

Lorena was extremely tense on both sides of her neck, specifically at the poll. Which tells me her body is compensating for her hind legs where the CPL has progressed more so than her front legs. As you swipe to the left you’ll see her initial reactions of this section, her head is high in discomfort and leaning away as I’m treating a spot. As I’m closing this section of her massage she lowers her head and leans into my hand.

It’s such a rewarding feeling when a horse lets you know you’ve relieved some of their pain/ tension/ discomfort. 🥰🐴

🐶 Chiquis (almost 9 yrs, pronounced “chee-keys”) she’s the crazy little dog that doesn’t think she’s little and she’s everyone’s favorite “little” dog 😂

🐶 Mendi (little over 4 yrs) is our non-stop hunter, 🐰🐭🦎 don’t stand a chance in our yard 😂, she’s also the goofiest and constantly makes us laugh
