Day 4-Toft Photo Safaris ‘Walking with Pumas’ Chile tour was filled with promise. We set out once more at 6:15am, returning to the area where Petaca’s family was thriving. Finally, we had the opportunity to capture the entire family together, a truly heartening moment. With their Guanaco kill from the previous night finished, Petaca embarked on a new journey to find sustenance, while her cubs rested together. We reunited with Petaca in the evening, witnessing her triumphant return to her cubs.

Day #3 Toft Photo Safari-“Walking with Pumas”
Day 3 started at 6:15am- We stopped on the road to photograph the full moon setting over the Torres peaks. Then preceded back to Coiron’s kill location to see if she was still in the area. We found her overlooking the glorious Laguna Amarga. Then followed her as she moved way up the valley. Following a puma as they walk up hill is never easy and push our group till exhaustion. She finally settled into a spot to rest in the rocks at the top of the valley. Our afternoon was spent back at Petaca’s kill where we waited all afternoon without much action as the family slept near the kill.

Day #2 Toft Photo Safari’s Puma tour: We embarked on an exhilarating mission to start day 2, driven by a promising tip from another guide that the renowned Petaca had secured a meal on the far side of the ranch. We arrived in the field at 7am, thrilled to begin our adventure. After a 45-minute walk, we were rewarded with the breathtaking sight of Petaca and her two 15-month-old cubs basking near the guanaco carcass. It was clear that the family had feasted through the night, and the prospect of witnessing this incredibly intimate moment filled us with awe. As the sun rose over the hill, Petaca diligently covered the kill with vegetation, undeterred by the fierce 50 mph winds. We seized the opportunity to sneak into position and capture some truly epic photos of the male cub against the stunning backdrop of the Torres mountains. With the pumas settled in for a well-deserved rest, we ventured out to soak up the majestic landscapes of this extraordinary location.

We are back home from our fantastic Puma expedition in Chile’s Patagonia. I finally had some time to process images and thought I would share them. I’ll be posting for the next 5 days in the order of our 5 days in the field. Here is Day #1:
We left our lodge at 6am and arrived in the field around 6:45am. Our spotter, Junior Mendes, had already found a Puma on a fresh Guanaco kill. By using a thermo scope, which detects heat, Junior could see the cat and still warm prey in the dark. We hiked a short distance and waited for the light to come up on this 7-8 year old female Puma called Coiron. After 30 mins. watcher her feed we saw another Puma crest the adjacent hill. This second cat slowly made her way near the kill site and laid down behind Coiron. Coiron left the kill after another 30 mins and walked away....allowing the second Puma to come and feed. This cat was identified by our guide Javiera Vargas as Bastona. Bastona is a relatively new cat for the area and has a dog-leg bend in her tail making identification easy. After feeding for awhile she left the kill and walked up the hill passing Coiron...who gave her a dirty look. We left the scene for lunch and siesta back at our lodge and returned in the afternoon. We arrived to a full and sleepy Coiron. We left her to rest and went to do some scenic photography and get back to our lodge for dinner. What a great first day in Pumaland!

Not cute and cuddly animal images here, but an interesting natural history story. I heard the distress calls of this female Hooded Oriole and found her fussing around her nest. At first the snake was not visible, but it was pretty obvious something was going on. I went back to the house and got my camera and returned to see the Gopher Snake coming out of the nest with a nearly fledged chick in its mouth. The mother Oriole continued to harass the snake without success and the snake finally released from the palm frond and fell to the ground...slithering away with a nice meal. The big question for me is how did the snake know the nest was there? It certainly would not be found with a random crawl by. It took a ten foot climb up the trunk of the palm and then traversing over to the frond. Smell??? Visually seeing the mother go into the nest? Perhaps both. Wild Ramona
