It is just getting started and we are so excited.

These little long legged babes are the first of the batch. We happen to walk out to check in their mama about 5 minutes after these cuties were born.

This mama is Devon, she was the first ewe we ever brought onto the ranch with 3 babes in tow. She is the sweetest girl and even in her old age (coming up on 9 years old) she is still lambing beautifully and unassisted.

Every day here on our farm at Happy Hens, we are reminded of the spirit that drives us forward and the original promise that set us on this path. It’s more than cultivating an incredible egg. It’s instilling integrity and hard work in the hearts of our children. It’s serving our community in a meaningful way. It’s about creating an entire ecosystem that nourishes. This is our legacy.

Although we don’t normally think of them this way, eggs are a seasonal product. They have peaks in size, color, and abundance throughout the year.

Are they jumbo, deep gold, and plentiful? It’s March. Have numbers decreased and yolks paled in color? Yup, it’s June. Are we getting cute, tiny eggs? The pullets have started laying. Have numbers and size leveled off? It’s definitely Fall, winter is coming, and I guarantee that farmer and fowl are ready for cooler weather.

The real takeaway from seeing changes in egg production is that you can be assured the chickens have been allowed to act naturally. Nature is diverse and changes with the seasons, and those changes are apparent in each and every egg. When the weather heats up and the grasses die back, chickens just don’t forage and eat as much – they’re hot, just like us! Chickens that lay eggs with an extreme vivid orange year-round most likely have feed with supplements. Chickens that are truly pasture-raised (as opposed to just having a small door to “access” pasture) will show variations in yolk color as the forage changes and the season changes.

Being the best at what you do takes a lot of work, remaining the best takes passion and dedication.

At Happy Hens, we believe that you deserve the best egg possible on the market. It is from this belief that we created our own 5-step process for our farm to ensure the quality of life for the hens, which in turn makes for a far superior egg.

What gives a yolks color it’s vibrancy, you ask? In simple terms it’s a combination of what season you are in and if hens have a diet rich in carotenoids.

Color of yolk is not the only tell of the quality of the egg but it is a coveted feature in the quality egg endeavor. As spring time brings about lush green pastures and the bug population begins to flourish, the yolk can become an even darker rich orange as a sign of this increased consumption of fresh grasses, worms and grasshoppers.

We’re at the front of the flock! Rated the #1 egg nation wide by The Cornucopia Institute means we never cut corners or let cost and profit cloud our commitment to our farm and the community it supports.

“The Cornucopia Institute is a non-profit consumer education and watchdog organization. We research brands and investigate the industry to identify and elevate authentic organic foods and farmers, while we scrutinize the USDA National Organic Program’s enforcement and application of the organic law.”

Always 100% organic, non-GMO, never any corn or soy, zero exceptions.

Why you might ask? We all know by now that in so many ways we truly ARE WHAT WE EAT, but we are also then just as influenced by WHAT THEY EAT.

We want to provide the absolute best for our birds. Our world is filled with so many toxins in our food and environment, we feel an obligation to minimize exposure both for the health of the hen and the community in which they support. Cutting corners is not part of our DNA here at Happy Hens and this is a staple in how we nourish our chickens.

“Why have roosters when they don’t lay eggs?” is a common question with a simple answer. Roosters, like all animals in nature, serve more purpose than just the occasional fertility of an egg. In fact, they are yet another layer of protection for the hens. With an eye on the sky and a keen sense for safety, these bold birds help to alert and warn of potential predators.

We keep our rooster numbers relatively low but their impact is important and they seem to know that.

“Does that mean your eggs are fertilized?” is usually the follow up question. While some eggs do get fertilized, we collect twice a day to ensure the incubation process doesn’t start to take place. Without a constant source of heat or the 21 days of incubation to develop, these eggs remain in a dormant stage.

In short, a fertilized egg does not mean a developing egg and embryo.

“Are fertilized eggs more nutritious?” is a common myth. There is currently zero scientific evidence to support the claim that a fertilized egg is more nutritionally dense.

A big thanks to our regal roosters who serve, swerve, peck and protect!

Give them plenty of room to roam! This goes for our chickens and our children.

One key element of our 5 Step Process for a Truly OUTDOOR Pasture-Raised chickens is having ample acreage for their exploration. By giving our birds the space and freedom to run and dig and bathe we avoid overcrowding and all the problems that creates.

Not only do we far exceed pasture-raised standards for space per chicken but we are also raising our flocks in small numbers to create a far less stressful environment so our hens can thrive. Think city living versus expansive country life. Less stress on the hens means a happier hen and ultimately a healthier egg.

Liquid gold right inside that colorful shell!

Did you know that eggs produced in a Truly OUTDOOR Pasture-Raised environment pack far more nutrients than your conventional or even cage-free eggs!!?

Researchers from the Pennsylvanian State University found that hens who are actually raised outdoors with all the right foods for their diet produce twice the amount of omega-3 fat, three times more vitamin D, four times the average amount of vitamin E and SEVEN times more beta-carotene!

Here at Happy Hens we are honored to provide such a nutritionally dense food for our community. That means YOU!
