Yesterday we had a call from a couple who were driving on a secondary highway and who saw a box on the side of the road. They slowed down and saw little heads peering over the edge of the box.

They immediately stopped and found that the box held 7 puppies, emaciated, mangy, of course full of worms, and one with head trauma.

They called a couple of rescues and were told they could not take them in. Their next call was to Hearts & Hands. After a few questions, we knew we had to take them in and get them to the help they needed.

After receiving the puppies, and triaging their condition, we called San Diego County Animal Services to get them immediate veterinary care.

Now the question is, as always, with these situations,how could anyone let these dear babies get to this state, and then put them on a box on the highway, where a predator could get to them immediately, or where they could have tipped the box and spilled out onto the road to be run over?

There was a note in the box, covered in excrement. It gave the pups' birthdate as August 11, 2023.

It said that the owner could no longer care for them and asked that they not be euthanized. Absolutely pathetic.

They are now at the beginning of their road to recovery, thanks to this good Samaritan couple, to Hearts & Hands facilitating the process and holding them for Animal Services, and to Countt Animal Services for getting the vet care they desperately need and then eventually placing them for adoption to qualified families.

They look to be Min Pin x with Jack Russells and have Jack Russell personalities to match. If anyone would like to consider adopting one of them, please PM us for their case number at Animal Services. They are almost a year old so theor size will be pretty much what you see.

It was a big day at Hearts & Hands today. Twenty one volunteers! What an incredible group and more are coming tomorrow. Some of which we got accomplished was constructing a new piggy pen. Angel welded it together so the two little piggies will be safe and secure. They come out for day time romps but need to be in there for night time safety.

Next we found that our wooden tack trailer was in really bad shape and had some rotting taking place from so much rain. Sal and Angel rebuilt it and will put shelves in it to organize all the tack that we will be offering for sale to help support the rescue.

The weedwackers were humming all over the property, cutting down the high weeds that grew from the non stop winter rains.

Tree trimmers came in and cut down a large tree that died in the the 2007 fires.

Highdex heifer got a full spa treatment and then some glamor shots.

We cannot thank our volunteers and donor enough for this amazing day!!! It is so encouraging when people come together to join in on the animal rescue mission.

We want to thank LovePlusPet for the new wheelchair for Sage, the lamb that came in with selenium/E deficiency, eye issues, and neurological issues at three days of age.

Here is his update. He is gaining much more control of his head and neck, can now see shadows, and is getting drops that are clearing his remaining glaucoma, and he has gained a tremendous amount of strength in his legs. He is actually running in his wheelchair, and comes to our voices when we call him. His progress has been quite amazing in just 11 weeks, from being so near death at three days old. He has doubled in weight and size.

He is not completely out of danger, but as long as he continues to progress, we are so hopeful for his recovery.

He is very happy, loves to play, knows how to ask in a different way for his bottle, his pellets, wanting to get in his wheelchair, wanting to get put of his wheelchair, and wanting to play. He is very, very smart.

The straps across his rump are to keep his backside in the wheelchair. He gets excited and, like a healthy lamb or a goat will, he leaps with his hind legs and without the straps, will leap right out of the chair. So with the straps, he leaps with the whole wheelchair and he remains in it.
