The Beginning
It was about a year ago today that I began to wonder if what I was doing with my life was enough. Enough for me. Enough for my family. Enough for my animals. It is so easy for us to get caught up in the routines, even if they do not make us completely happy. Our daughters have grown up hearing the phrase “You have to do what you need to do before you can do what you want to do.” And I have done exactly that, but about a year ago I realized I was so caught up in doing what I needed to do that I totally forgot about what I wanted to do with my life. Help Animals. And so the journey began.
This journey began with tons of soul searching. When I was a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. I have always had animals in my life. They were all a very important part of that life. They helped me through hard times and they were there with me through the good times. I’ve loved and lost and then loved again, because I could not imagine my life without them. My loves have been cats, dogs, birds, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, cows, pigs, owls, hamsters, mice, and last but certainly not least, horses. I hate to say one animal has had a larger impact on me over another, because I love them all so much, but horses have had such a profound and monumental impact on my life that I must give in to the reality that I love them most of all. My horses have taught me more then I have ever taught them. How to live, how to relax, how to stay grounded. My connection with them is something of fairy tales and I knew I needed to do something to help give back what they have given to me. So, I started researching the equine industries and when I saw equine massage therapy I knew I found my calling.
The next step in this journey began right after a horrible car accident that occurred on July 21, 2019. Oh, how quickly things can change and without notice. One minute my wife and I were on our way to a casino and the next we were hanging upside down by our seat belts on the side of the road. An oncoming car failed to turn a corner and came fully into our lane, Right At Us.... I avoided a head on collision, but she ended up hitting the back corner of our car, which in turn, sent us spinning and flipping off the road. My wife incurred lots of soft tissue damage and a torn labrum in her hip. I ended up with several compression fractures in my spine (C7-T4). Luckily, surgery was not necessary because nothing moved out of place and my spinal cord was untouched. However, being confined to a full brace for 3 months allowed for much contemplation and soul searching.
It didn’t take me long to decide that if I came out of this healthy I was going to pursue my dream of helping animals. To help me stay motivated, that I would in fact come out of this situation, I made the decision to become certified in equine massage therapy and small animal massage therapy through Holistic Animal Studies by Angel's Animals LLC (an accredited course by International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork, IAAMB and National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, NCBTMB). One step at a time, I completed my coursework. And as soon as I was healthy enough to began my hands-on hours I jumped on it.
