It’s no secret that 2024 has been a difficult year for us. We’re up to our eyeballs in debt, and we still can’t use any Meta fundraising tools. But, it’s after sunset in December, and Ranchita is a comfortable 53° with no wind. We can’t help but feel very grateful for that.

It won’t surprise anyone to hear that pigs are tough on infrastructure. Particularly big pigs on infrastructure that separates them from their food bins… 😖
When their main fence was destroyed for the second time, and funding didn’t allow us to repair or replace it, we tied it up. For more than a year, we’ve relied on our best Tarzan impersonations to scale the fence, lifting hay bales and feed buckets over as needed. But today, Tierra looked at the forecast, and realized that we’ll very soon need to move new shelters into the lower yards, along with tools, materials, and thousands of pounds of winter bedding.
Using only scrap lumber, pallets, and braided baling twine to allow hinging, she single-handedly created a 10.5’ long, mega heavy, ultra duty, wide-opening gate, complete with extended stops to prevent it from opening outward - even if tackled by our strongest pigs at breakfast time!
On this eve of her very special Golden Birthday, I couldn’t be more proud of Tierra’s true grit, raw determination, gentle compassion, creative spirit, wry humor, and loyal friendship. Erick and I couldn’t ask for a more extraordinary baby girl. Truly.

We’re feeling 🥵🥵🥵 as we get ready for the 6th (and FINAL!) day of Oktoberfest 2024, but getting the One Year Ago reminder of tiny Chance - who beat every odd stacked against him to become the spunky, funky, chunky boy snoring away in the dining room this morning - is keeping me going.

Erick made a trip to Ramona for a single day of pig food yesterday. I had planned to post about our fundraising crisis - the reason we’ve been buying food by the day; the first time since 2021 that we’ve been unable to pay for bulk food direct from the mill. It’s twice the price per pound, but we don’t have enough in the bank to get our usual, 8-ton delivery. As stressed and hopeless as I’ve felt when we pay double each day, yesterday’s trip to Ramona was even more depressing than usual. Erick was driving past a local egg ranch, a “small, family farm”, the kind applauded for being separate from the evils of factory farming. There was a fire burning as he drove by. When news came out this morning, it was reported that 70,000 birds were in that single building, just one of over a dozen buildings on the ranch. While the loss of lives is sad, what depresses me even more is to know how many individual hearts and minds live their lives in cramped captivity. It’s a painful reminder that eggs are not a victimless food. 70,000 lives in one building. Seventy THOUSAND. Tierra is an extraordinary chef, and can share ideas and advice on egg replacement.
