With pomegranates in season, one of our homeschool students wrote this beautiful haiku inspired by the fruit:
"The Pomegranate"
pomegranates oh,
I adore their scrumptiousness,
so sweet and yummy.
It’s amazing to see how students connect with nature through poetry and hands-on learning. We’re excited to continue nurturing their creativity and knowledge of seasonal fruits!

October and November are a great time to plant spring blooming bulbs in your garden! Here is the low-down for successful planting:

Who? Spring blooming bulbs such as tulips, hyacinth, daffodils, Iris, alliums and crocus.

When? Plant most of these bulbs now, except for tulips, hyacinth and crocus, which should be chilled in the refrigerator for 6-10 weeks before planting.

How? Plant larger bulbs about 8 inches deep and smaller bulbs around 4 inches deep. Make sure to plant them with the pointy side facing up and the flatter, rougher, root side facing down. After planting, water the bulbs and add mulch to the soil to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Don’t worry about covering the bulbs with the mulch, they’ll be able to grow through it!

Where? If you’re unsure about where to plant them, try tossing a handful in the air and planting them in whatever spot they land! If you have limited space, consider planting bulbs in containers.

Just for Kids is a special program for youth ages 6-11. Join us on the first Saturday of the month at Soil Born Farms as you explore, investigate, taste, make and garden. Each Saturday has a unique focus that will offer students new learning experiences, opportunities to make new friends and a chance for them to connect with the outdoor world.
Parents are encouraged to enjoy a relaxing morning on the farm, listen to live music, meet friends for coffee at Phoebe’s, take a walk or class, shop for produce and plants or drop off their kids and have three hours to themselves on Saturday morning.

Praying mantises are beneficial insects that naturally control garden pests like aphids, flies, and grasshoppers. They're expert hunters with sharp vision and fast reflexes, helping maintain a balanced ecosystem without chemicals.
Fun fact: Sacramento is home to a native pink praying mantis, Stagmomantis californica! These unique mantises blend into flowers, making them even more effective hunters.

Did you know that therapy chickens are helping kids build social skills?
These gentle birds can offer comfort, reduce anxiety, and create opportunities for children to practice communication and empathy. By caring for chickens, kids learn responsibility, patience, and how to interact positively with others.
Plus, spending time with animals like chickens fosters a sense of calm and connection to nature.

We’re buzzing with excitement to announce that Soil Born Farms has received a grant for our bee program! Thanks to the incredible support from , we’re able to host and nurture these vital pollinators.

Not only will these bees help our farm thrive, but they will also be a key part of our educational programs for children, teaching future generations the importance of pollinators and sustainable farming practices.

Our dedicated team, including Amy (swipe to see her in action), is working hard to create a safe haven for our bees, ensuring they thrive and inspire young minds about the wonders of nature.

A big THANK YOU to Whole Kids Foundation for helping us grow our impact! Together, we’re making a difference—one bee and one child at a time.

Our Story A Shared Vision of Healthy Food for All

Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project began as a for-profit farm in 2000 by Shawn Harrison and Marco Franciosa, two young and inexperienced organic farmers who had a dream and lots of ambition.

Wanting to reconnect urban dwellers with healthy food and where it is grown, Shawn and Marco put a handwritten note in the mailbox of a local Sacramento resident asking if they could farm on her land in exchange for produce. The next day a deal was struck, and Soil Born Farms was born.
