The Native Oak and Elderberry Forest is an exciting project that will explore and offer insights into not only the market value of native plants, but the ecological and health value as well. This is one step on our path to sustainable and regenerative farming, and we can't wait to share the journey with you all.

Thank you to our indigenous tribal partners and local ecology experts for their commitment to this project.

Li'l Sprouts in the Garden is a multi-sensory exploration session for children ages 3-5 and an adult chaperone. Sing songs, play games, listen to stories and explore with all your senses!

In this session, participants will take a trip to the greenhouse to practice our early math skills by learning about the six plant parts! Students will make their own mini-greenhouses, learn the Plant Parts song, and hunt for, harvest and taste plants throughout the garden. We’ll end our day with a game and art project that will help the Li'l Sprouts connect to the plants in our world.

Last Fall, Soil Born Farms co-hosted the class "Teaching Science in Outdoor Settings" with California State University Sacramento. Students led field trips for kids, designed science activities, built eco-consciousness, and incorporated mindfulness and California’s Environmental Principles into their teaching.
We are inspired to see these future teachers fostering curiosity, care for the environment, and ecological responsibility in the next generation!

🚜⚡Electrifying Our Fleet! ⚡🚜
Big news from the farm—our Monarch electric tractor has arrived!
Its first task? Chipping pruned branches—without using fossil fuels! This marks a huge milestone as we continue to transition to clean, climate-resilient equipment.
The Monarch tractor joins our two John Deere Gators, which are also fully electric. With these additions, we are making great strides to electrify our fleet, reduce emissions, and lower our carbon footprint. By integrating clean technology into our daily operations, we are advancing our commitment to regenerative agriculture and a climate-smart food system.
A huge THANK YOU to SMUD, CDFA’s Urban Agriculture Grant Program, California CORE, and the California Air Resources Board for making this possible. Your support is helping us lead the way in sustainable farming innovation.

Our Youth Garden is thriving with cover crops like rye, oats, fava beans, winter peas, vetch, and phacelia which were planted with youth back in October. These plants do more than just look pretty; they’re hard at work enriching the soil with nutrients, preventing erosion, and boosting biodiversity.
Once they start flowering, we’ll mow them down and cover the soil to return those nutrients to the earth, creating a healthy foundation for future crops. We use this full-circle process in our field trip curriculum to educate youth about the importance of soil health and regenerative farm practices.
Our Youth Education Team loves using the garden as a classroom to inspire kids to think about the hidden world beneath their feet.

Our Story A Shared Vision of Healthy Food for All

Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project began as a for-profit farm in 2000 by Shawn Harrison and Marco Franciosa, two young and inexperienced organic farmers who had a dream and lots of ambition.

Wanting to reconnect urban dwellers with healthy food and where it is grown, Shawn and Marco put a handwritten note in the mailbox of a local Sacramento resident asking if they could farm on her land in exchange for produce. The next day a deal was struck, and Soil Born Farms was born.

The Dream Grows
