“Lest Best” - Making changes with the power of patience.

Day 142 with “Lest Best” was a very big day, as Lester turned 8! It has been just under 6 months since this guy came to us and it has been incredible to see his progress given the time he needs. We couldn’t have done it with out the amazing team and sponsors we have, and we would like to give a special thanks to Kate Whitney and , and .eq. We wouldn’t be on this journey with you. Happy birthday Lester🥳

It was great to be back at Del Mar National after 5 years! Viveka Chang and her own “Zaretina B” and Mikayla Vosseller and “Geez Louise” put in smooth and efficient rounds in the 1.0 this week. Wendy and “Origi Van HD” also jumped around competitively in the 1.0 and 1.10. We are thrilled to see these horses and riders continue to grow!

“Lest Best” - Making Changes with the Power of Patience
Part Two

Day 67 we arrive home from the show and find that Lester is quite sore in his body. Back to easy work, lots of movement, and lots of therapy to help his muscles and joints.

Day 80 and Lester is feeling much stronger in his body. The magnetic therapy and Class 4 laser on the neck, back, feet, and sacrum have brought huge improvements.

Day 90 my longtime mentor Mauro Atzeri comes from Italy to hold a clinic at Rancho Cielo and work with Lester and I. We work with simple exercises that are anything but easy. Mauro brings wisdom, understanding, and feeling to the sport and it is a honor to work with him. He is a reminder that it is not what you do, but the way in which you do them that matters. Thank you Mauro!

Day 95 we leave for DIHP. On Wednesday we do one 1.0 class and have two rails. The ride-ability isn’t all there and he is getting down the lines early and trying to take over. After a little bit of flat and pole work in between, we go in for our 1.10 round on Thursday and what a difference! Mauro and I spent hours with this horse hand walking, short longe, gymnastics, and flatting. The time invested in this horse, getting him out of his stall several times a day and utilizing different therapies and bodywork truly changes the outcome. He is learning to trust his rider. Thank you again to Mauro Atzeri for taking the time to share your expertise with us.

Day 105 we end two weeks of showing in a beautiful, smooth round in the 1.10 stake. The most technical track we have jumped together and I was very impressed with the level of ride-ability I had.

The goal is to continue to develop Lester to the top levels of the sport with the power of patience.

“Lest Best” - Making Changes with the Power of Patience
Part One

This lovely gelding came to us three months ago to continue his development as a show jumper. At 8 years old Lester is already a war horse. He has a strong mind but is weak in his body, both of which needed rehabilitation to move forward with his training. His story reminds us of Simpatica 33 and her journey to Grand Prix competition through the power of patience.

Day 1, Lester arrives with quarter cracks that need attention and tired muscles. He is unsure about me, worried about traffic, and is always tuned into other horses acting out. I begin with gentle work, mostly just waking and trotting, as it feels that he does not need pressure right now. He’s very much behind the bit so we put him in a simple rubber snaffle to encourage him to stretch and use his neck. We adjusted the shoeing and used Equisani hoof oil twice a day to strengthen the feet. I am spending a lot of time with him in and out of the stall.

Day 30 Lester and I jump out first course together at a training day in Temecula. The course is small and we trotted almost everything as that’s all I felt I could ask of him, and even then we had no brakes. Lester can be like a freight train when he feels nervous. He is naturally a big, strong horse and our experience brought me to the realization that I needed to build my strength to work properly with this horse. I began going to the gym again to jump rope and lift weights.

Day 60 we take Lester to our first horse show together. This is also the first time we canter a full course. We decided to put him in the hunter ring the first day as that felt like a natural progression from the training we had been doing at home. The ask was simple and he jumped around beautifully. The following day we tackled the jumper ring, competing in the 1.10 jumpers and I was blown away by his tremendous progress. This horse is all heart.

16 years ago “Valentino 33”was born . He survived the equivalent of ICU in the hospital for babies . Had a 40 percent chance of survival at 3 days old . I would visit him on the hospital and sit Indian style on the floor with him in my lap. He was so little . I prayed for a miracle ♥️

Meet Wendy Lee Thompson

Wendy has been training horses for almost 30 years and has competed, coached and trained horses and riders all over the United States and Europe. She has recently returned from the 2014 Global Champions Tour in Europe including Chantilly, London,Valkenswaard and the Stephex Masters in Belgium. Prior to this Wendy had been a private coach, rider, and trainer for various families including La Joie Farms, Bo Shin Farms, Cypress Trails Farm and Fleur de Lis Farms; training their horses from baby green hunters to grand prix jumpers. She also coached the members of those families from junior and amateur riders preparing them for competition of all levels throughout the United States. In 1997 she operated her business known as “Coastline Hunters and Jumpers” and competed her Grand Prix Horse “Winstar” on the California Grand Prix Circuit, competing in the World Cup qualifiers for the “Will to Win” Foundation. Her goal, alongside this foundation was to promote cancer awareness and her quest for the Olympic Games representing American Samoa. This was of great importance to her both professionally and personally, as she is a stage 4 cancer survivor of synovial sarcoma. Her battle with cancer has given her a deeper understanding of health and fitness for herself and her horses. Physical health and a balance of emotional well-being are closely intertwined and are the foundation and success with her training.

Wendy consistently and competitively competes on her mare, Simpatica 33 in the 1.40 jumpers. As well, she shows her young horses in the young hunters and jumpers. Wendy also has a reputation for rehabbing horses. She has brought back numerous horses that the owners had almost given up on. She believes in order to keep a horse physically and mentally sound for the show ring, lasting results will be achieved through a consistent program based on trust and time for natural progression to develop. She takes a gentle approach to every situation. Wendy looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with horses and riders of all levels in Southern California
