A natural connection
The conception for Summers Dog Guardian came January 27th 2018, when I brought home a beautiful 6 week old puppy; Whom I named Luna.
As a young adult still living at my parents house, I was completely under prepared and totally overwhelmed with the presence of this demonstratively cute creature. Within the first few weeks the pressure and strain she seemingly caused me had grown too much, I was unable to go to the gym, my sleeping schedule was wildly thrown out of wack, I had less time for my friends and my bedroom smelled a lot more of urine. I attempted to find a new home for Luna, I called around and even met several potential loving families to take her off my hands.
Now a few of the candidates seemed like good fits, and some of the others less so... But what I realized then was that Luna was my responsibility and I felt as though only I could truly give her the life she really deserved. I resolved to keep her and with that I consciously made the decision to do the best I could for her. So naturally I began researching how best to take care of Dogs, what I found was a widely extensive culture of Canine and Human relationships that has its start point roughly 25,000 years ago!
Dogs of the past of the past were not pets, these noble animals worked symbiotically with homo sapiens to increase the likely hood of survival for both parties. Dogs for centuries have universally had one of four functions they preformed in proto and even modern humanity. Hunting, dogs helped track, exhaust, and kill prey animals needed both for their own and their humans nutrient needs. Guarding, dogs lived within tribal villages and alerted there people to dangers and even physically protected there human pack from threats such as predatory animals or even invading tribes. Pulling, dogs in Inuit areas such as North America and Greenland played a crucial role of transportation, sled dogs became a way for peoples of this hostile frozen terrain to travel further and have access to more natural resources, such as arctic seals and wood. Lastly we have Herding, dogs working with the “Shepard” to direct and protect flocks of sheep, cows and goats. Allowing for Shepards to have larger and safer flocks, and providing a sustainable food resource for both man and dog. Dogs full fill one other role in early human culture, which is that of War companions, as a combination of Hunting and Guarding it is worth noting that all of these working variations and more exist today. In the 21st century dogs have gained even more of foothold in human culture and picked up a few more jobs too. Such as Emotional support animals, Certified therapy animals, Specially trained service animals along with a impressive list of uses the police force and military have found for our canine companions.
