‼️5 THINGS YOU CAN DO BEFORE SENDING YOUR C**TS TO THE TRAINER ‼️

We get asked a lot from folks on our waiting list, “what can I start doing with my c**t before I send them?”
Great question!

1.) Make sure they are relatively easy to catch!
-this makes our lives easier, and we don’t have to spend time trying to catch your horse, instead we can use that time to teach them under saddle! Use your time wisely, to help us spend our time productively!

2.) Teach them to stand tied
-horses that already know how to stand tied, already know how to release to pressure and have started learning how to self soothe. We LOVE when babies come in already knowing how to stand tied. It makes saddling and handling just that much easier.

3.) Take them on walks!
-hand walk those babies or pony them around your property. It makes them that much more confident and that much better in hand and in a halter. Just 10-15 minutes a couple times a week does wonders for those baby brains!

4.) Pick up their feet!
-It’s a very simple task that most people skip! It’s one of the first things we do when we get your c**t to our barn: get control of those feet. If they already know how to pick them up and hold them, they are that much more ahead of the game!

5.) Groom them!
-make sure they are used to being touched all over! Spray them down with a hose if you like!

Don’t do anything you are uncomfortable with. Don’t saddle them for the first time if you aren’t keen on first saddlings or first rides. Don’t do a bunch of ground work if you’re not super sure what you are trying to achieve. 9/10 we have to re-do the ground work anyway for our program! Let that horse have a fresh slate when going to school ☺️ and if you want to learn how to do all those things, come on out and we will show you the ropes!

As always, if you have any questions, we are just a phone call or a message away!

Due to extreme weather moving in, and for the safety of the horses and for our sanity 🤪
We will not be working horses until the temp rises next week.

This also means lessons are cancelled until further notice. Please get ahold of Raina to get back on the books or to re-schedule pickup/drop off if you are waiting on that as well!

Horses will be rotated in and out of the barn, plenty of hay, blankets where needed, and fresh water.

Please feel free to drop a blanket or any supplements off that you might want for your horse.

Stay warm everyone! Luckily it looks like the negatives will be short lived and we can’t wait to get back to riding! ☺️

Picture One and Two.

First saddling for this handsome guy 😍

Let them be curious, let them be cautious.
Don’t sneak around them, don’t dumb it down for them.

They are toddlers essentially.
They ARE going to learn that 2+2=4 in school. Plain and simple.

But it’s going to be a lot harder for them to learn that equation if you let them think that, 2+2=(5-2)+attitude.

Treat them fair, let them be curious, let them be hesitant, but never change the question.

Reward the try, but praise the CORRECT answer.

This guys first saddling was quiet, fair, and thoughtful. Just how we expect the first ride to go. Foundation is everything

Little bit of a long post but we are doing some cool things right now!!!

We have quite the different theme in our string of incoming horses right now. You all know Aries, well we have a few that are similar to her.

Most a little weary of humans and mostly unhandled. We truly enjoy the challenge of getting them connected and trusting. We almost prefer, that the older they are, the less they are handled. Then it seems that you are only fighting instinct and genetics VS instinct, genetics AND human error/interaction. Human error as in no boundaries, no respect of personal space, nipping, running off, running over ect. It’s not always purposefully instilled, but it’s there. They become friends, companions, “our little babies” and we let them get away with some little things here and there that become bad habits. Keep your horses accountable. It’s easier to “correct” (re-direct/train) pure horse behavior than it is to correct human influenced horse behavior.

IF you have a young one you are wanting to send off to get started, have a plan in mind of who you are going to send it to. Do your re-search. Makes sure their plan/program aligns with what you are looking for. Build a relationship. And then PLEASE talk to your c**t starter about what you should and shouldn’t do for “pre-training/preparation.” Everyone has a different method, and I promise you, having that conversation early on and being honest, will save you money and time, and save your c**t starter/trainer headache and frustration. Let your expectations be known early, have those tougher conversations early, but be open-minded to timelines set by your trainer. THEN when the horse is ready to come home, please take at least one lesson from your trainer on said horse. Learn how they cue, how they handle, what they set as their standard. Don’t expect a broke kids horse after 60-90 days.
It’s an investment and a process, not a cookie cutter nor is it black and white.

With ALL that being said: we would like to introduce you to another hardly handled c**t that we are REALLY excited about

We call this one Boss, he had a halter on him just a few times and mostly had to be roped to catch even after he came here.
He was an orphan foal but never hand fed (would love to have a discussion with different trainer’s experiences with orphan foals.)
Boss definitely was, and still is, pretty watchy and weary of us 2 leggers. We are slowly but surely building that trust up and getting through the basics. He is a fast learner and extremely eager to do the right thing, even though he isn’t sure if he wants to be a bff 🤣 he’s curios and play driven and really wants to please despite his natural fight or in his case, mostly flight instinct.

Today he was caught in the big pen with a halter with ease, went through ground work like a champion and then he got hosed down, fly sprayed, all four feet picked up and picked, tied in the barn and brushed all over without hardly twitching an ear. It’s doesn’t seem like much but the effort and patience it took to get to this point is huge, by both 4 and 2 legger. It’s the TRY from him that counts the most.

Basics are a huge factor to making a partner. They gotta trust you, and you have to trust them.

We are excited to see how Boss progresses as we are gearing him up to riding!

We love a Cinderella story!
This mare has quite the history.
8 years old. Untouched. Unhandled. Very sentimental horse to the owner for so many heart touching reasons.
By the end of the first day, Luke was able to pet her all over and lead her by the rope.
We are really looking forward to how Aries progresses after we get her to the place!

We hope everyone had a fabulous Labor Day weekend!
We took a small getaway to the mountains, and we are away until tomorrow morning. If you have texted or called for updates, we will get back to you as soon as we are in full service and back at the barn!
Thanks to our awesome chore help for making it possible for us to be gone!
I will get caught up on horse updates, pics and videos, calendars, scheduling, all the fun stuff tomorrow!

Kadoka SD has been so great to us and we have cherished our summer here. Between spending time and working with family, to re-uniting with old friends, Kadoka has been the perfect kick start to 9 of Spades. We don’t take lightly to what our family and the community has done for us here. We were welcomed with open arms and taken care of like we have lived here our entire lives. And our clients… YOU GUYS ROCK! We couldn’t have asked for a better set of clients for our first official few months in business. You know who you are, and we couldn’t be more thankful for you… But the winters of SD are pretty hard on a guy making a living with the four leggers, as most of you know…

We are really excited to announce that we are moving the business to Caputa! Holzer Arena LLC runs a great operation and we are so thrilled to be working with them!
This facility gives us opportunity to keep operations moving along through the winter time!
We also will be able to do more on property and off property lessons/riding!

C**t starts, problem horses, tune-ups, lessons!
Please don’t hesitate to call, message, text for our rates and openings!

Thank you Kadoka! Thank you Bill and Jacque Weller 🤍 We love you guys so much and are so thankful that we were able to spend the summer here with you guys and it’s hard to leave this beautiful place.

Hello Caputa. We are excited to make new connections, relationships and memories with you!
