🎃Halloween Can Be Stressful for Cats🎃: While Halloween is a fun time for humans, it can be stressful for cats due to the unfamiliar and sometimes frightening costumes, sounds, and gadgets associated with the holiday.

🎃Black Cats Are at Risk🎃: Black cats are particularly at risk as some individuals may harm them due to superstitions and myths associated with Halloween. The article advises keeping all cats, regardless of color, indoors in the days leading up to Halloween and on Halloween night to protect them from potential harm.

🎃Candy and Cats🎃: Halloween candy is not suitable for cats, and some can be toxic, like chocolate. The article also warns about the dangers of candy packaging, such as lollipop sticks and wrappers that cats may ingest.

🎃Jack O' Lantern Safety🎃: Cats might be curious about lit pumpkins, so it's important to ensure they are not left unattended in areas with candles inside pumpkins, as this could pose a fire risk.

🎃Avoid Dressing Up Cats🎃: Dressing up cats in Halloween costumes is discouraged, as it can frighten or harm the animals. If costumes are used, they should not restrict movement, vision, or breathing, and there should be no small accessories that the cat could swallow.

🎃Keep Cats Away from Trick-or-Treaters🎃: Keep your cat in a separate room during trick-or-treating to prevent it from getting scared and bolting outside due to the presence of strangers and scary costumes. This is especially important for indoor cats and those without defense capabilities due to declawing.

Overall, the article provides advice to keep your cat safe, calm, and happy during the Halloween festivities by minimizing potential stressors and dangers associated with the holiday.

What is clostridium?

Clostridial enterotoxicosis is a complex and poorly understood syndrome characterized by diarrhea that is associated with the bacteria Clostridium perfringens (CP). "Clostridial" refers to the Clostridium bacteria, "entero" refers to the intestines, and "toxicosis" is the medical term assigned to any condition caused by a toxin or a poison.

It is suspected that up to 15-20% of diarrhea cases in dogs are CP-related. While clostridial enterotoxicosis may occur in dogs of any age, most dogs who develop chronic signs are middle-aged or older.

What are the clinical signs associated with clostridial enterotoxicosis?

Clostridial enterotoxicosis is associated with either acute (sudden) diarrhea that is typically self-limiting, lasting for 5-7 days, or chronic (long-term), intermittent diarrhea.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a simple, tiny (about the size of a grain of rice), and an inexpensive way to give your pet a “voice.”

It gives your pet the ability to tell the person who finds them who they are and where they live.

A microchip provides secure, reliable, and permanent identification, which greatly increases the likelihood that your pet if lost, will be returned home to you!

Toxoplasmosis!

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). It is one of the most common parasitic diseases and infects nearly all warm-blooded animals, including pets and humans. Although cats are a necessary part of the life cycle of T. gondii, the parasite rarely causes clinical disease in them. While T. gondii seldomly causes significant symptoms in healthy adults either (see below for exceptions), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently identified toxoplasmosis as one of five neglected parasitic infections of people due to its high prevalence. More than 60 million people in the U.S. are thought to be infected.

Worm Wednesday

🪱Whipworm🪱

Whipworms are intestinal parasites that are about 1/4 inch long. They live in the cecum (a pouch that forms the first part of the large intestine) and large intestine of dogs, where they cause severe irritation to the intestinal lining. Whipworm infection results in bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and general debilitation.

Whipworms pass microscopic eggs in the stool. The eggs are resistant to drying and heat so they can remain alive in the environment for up to five years. Once laid, they mature to an infective stage and can re-infect a new dog in 10-60 days. The mature eggs are swallowed by the dog, hatch, and then mature into adults in the lower intestinal tract, completing their life cycle

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is a common skeletal condition, often seen in large or giant breed dogs, although it can occur in smaller breeds, as well.

Some puppies have special nutrition requirements and need food specially formulated for large-breed puppies. These foods help prevent excessive growth, which can lead to skeletal disorders such as hip dysplasia, along with elbow dysplasia and other joint conditions. Slowing down these breeds’ growth allows their joints to develop without putting too much strain on them, helping to prevent problems down the line.

Improper nutrition can also influence a dog’s likelihood of developing hip dysplasia, as can giving a dog too much or too little exercise. Obesity puts a lot of stress on your dog’s joints, which can exacerbate a pre-existing condition such as hip dysplasia or even cause hip dysplasia. Talk to your vet about the best diet for your dog and the appropriate amount of exercise your dog needs each day to keep them in good physical condition.

Worm Wednesday!

🪱Tape Worms 🪱

Tapeworms are flat, segmented intestinal parasites of the cat and dog. The tapeworm uses its hook-like mouthparts for anchoring to the wall of the small intestine. Eventually, adult tapeworms reach lengths of up to 11 inches. As the adult tapeworm matures, individual segments break off from the main body of the tapeworm and pass in the dog’s f***s. The segments resemble grains of rice or cucumber seeds and are about 1/2 inch long and about 1/8 inch wide. Occasionally, they can be seen moving on the hairs around the a**s, or more commonly, on the surface of freshly passed f***s.

Feline Asthma

Cats suffering from asthma may show signs of:

-Difficulty breathing
-Wheezing
-Rapid breathing
-Coughing or Hacking
-Open-Mouthed Breathing
-Vomiting

These signs can vary in intensity, ranging from acute respiratory crises to chronic, low-grade coughing, elevated respiratory rate, or increased respiratory effort. These signs may happen spontaneously or they may be elicited by pressing lightly on the cat’s throat area. During an asthma attack, many cats hunch their body close to the ground and extend their necks forward in a characteristic posture
