Last week, an ER doctor at Monument Health in Rapid City refused to examine a woman with a broken back. Assuming intoxication was the primary concern, even though the woman was communicating her inability to safely walk, sit, or stand as well as the intense pain she was in, Monument sent her to detox.

The ER doctor decided that intoxication was a good reason to discontinue triage and refuse care. Is that policy?

The woman returned to Monument the next day and was treated- undergoing a 17 hour back surgery. She is still in the hospital, and her family is documenting the substandard care she is receiving; being placed on her side when she should only be on her back, wet bedding, an overflowing catheter, compression sleeves to prevent clots not being hooked up and not working properly. Dirty gloves, food, dishes, soiled bedding left in the room.

Refusing care to a woman with a broken back is unacceptable. Citing intoxication as an acceptable reason to refuse care is unacceptable. And continued substandard care is unacceptable.

The family is asking for this information to be shared with the community, and for Monument to be held accountable.

We do our best to fit your schedule and with any special needs your pet may have. Quick service appointments available upon request. Highly trained with more challenging pets.
