Happy Trails....may your journey be all you are hoping for!

14/04/2023

I, Dr. Laurie, am proud to announce that the Country Vet will be under new ownership.

We have been in this together for over 23 years. It has been such a pleasure getting to know you all, so many wonderful people. Together we have shared laughs, tears, stories and friendship. I have had the honor of watching your little ones grow up, caring for them through the good and the bad. Yet, in everyoneโ€™s life, there comes a time when a new path or opportunity presents itself.

We get one go around in this beautiful life. Itโ€™s time for me to walk a new path, blaze a new trail, yet never forgetting the people and paths that have been part of this journey. The journey would not have been so beautiful had it not been for you all. A big thank you to the dedicated staff, the amazing clients and their 4-legged families, my family and friends.

A gathering will be planned this summer to celebrate. A celebration of new adventures, old friends, familiar faces and life. The date location and time will be announced on my page, Laurie Kaski-Hammar. Please come, share a memory, share a drink, share some fellowship and smiles. God Bless.

If you schedule a large animal farm call with Dr. Leah, she can do routine exams and vaccinations on your cats and dogs too! We know this can often be more convenient for owners than trying to bring in multiple pets or catch sneaky barn cats.

Dr. Leah will travel about a one hour radius from Country Vet for farm calls. We try to group our farm calls for a day to a certain area in order to decrease drive time, so itโ€™s helpful if you have other people in your area that can also schedule a farm call that same day.

Please call Country Vet at 906-474-6673 to schedule your crewโ€™s spring farm call! A staff member will take down your information and Dr. Leahโ€™s assistant will call you back in a timely manner to schedule the farm call accordingly. We are scheduling farm calls for Mondays and our soonest availability for routine farm calls is April 24th.

Did you know the term โ€œfloatingโ€ comes from the carpentry and masonry trades, and means โ€œlevelingโ€ and โ€œsmoothingโ€? This is the goal of equine dentistry: to remove any sharp points or problems so the mouth can once again be balanced.

Horses have large cheek teeth that have a rough chewing (occlusal) surface that they use to grind their fibrous feeds in an elliptical type motion. Their teeth erupt continuously and begin very long inside the skull when a horse is young and wear down over the life of the horse. The lower jaw (mandible) is narrower than the upper jaw (maxilla) so when the horse chews, the teeth can wear inappropriately creating sharp โ€œpoints.โ€ These points will arise most commonly on the cheek (buccal) aspect of the upper jaw and on the tongue (lingual) aspect of the lower jaw. These points can cause irritation along your horseโ€™s cheeks or tongue and cause them discomfort when grinding their feed or when using a bit. Other problems that can occur are โ€œhooksโ€, โ€œstepsโ€, โ€œrampsโ€ or โ€œwave mouthโ€ malocclusions and can cause discomfort or even cause your horse to not be able to move their jaw in the proper direction while grinding feed.

If a horse does not have a healthy mouth, they can drop feed or not fully digest their feed due to their improper grinding. Dental problems can also cause your horse to loose weight, can contribute to GI problems like choke, colic, or diarrhea, or have mobility issues like turning or flexing their neck. If their mouth is uncomfortable from sharp points, they can act up under saddle, making it difficult for them to do their job appropriately.

Equine dental exams are recommended yearly, but may need to occur more frequently depending on your horseโ€™s oral health and genetics. Sedated oral exams are the best way to do a thorough equine dental exam, so all of the teeth can be visualized with a speculum while keeping the horse and veterinarian as safe as possible. During the sedation, the teeth floating process will be done on the aspects of the teeth that are problematic for your horse. Care is taken to only file off only what is necessary of problem areas, while still maintaining the proper 45 degree angle of the occlusal surface of the teeth.

Dr. Leah uses hand float tools to file the sharp points and problem areas of your horseโ€™s teeth. Please call Country Vet at 906-474-6673 to schedule your horses' farm call for their spring dental float. A staff member will take down your information and Dr. Leahโ€™s assistant will call you back in a timely manner to schedule the farm call accordingly.

We are currently scheduling farm calls for Mondays, starting April 3rd. On April 3rd, we will be in the Gladstone/Rapid River area for the morning and could add another farm call for this area, or for the Gwinn area. On April 10th, we will be in the Skandia area and can add a few more farm calls to this day. Please contact the office today to get onto our schedule for either of these days, as they are on a first call, first fill basis.

We are happy to formally introduce you to our newest veterinarian addition, Dr. Leah!

Dr. Leah Reid started at Country Vet in June of last year, but has had a few months off due to adding two beautiful twins to her family. She will be starting back up next week and is looking forward to caring for your animals, large or small.

With Dr. Leahโ€™s return, we will be opening the schedule for dog and cat surgeryappointments, which include but are not limited to spays, neuters, mass removals, etc. Additionally, beginning in April, farm calls will be available. Over the next few days, we will be reaching out to our current waitlist of surgery appointments, but should you not be on our waitlist or would like to schedule a farm call, please call the office at 906-474-6673.

Dr. Leah is a 2018 graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine who has been practicing mixed animal medicine in the UP ever since. Growing up in the thumb of Michigan, Leah developed her love for animals very early in life. She was an active 4-H participant for 9 years and also volunteered in a therapeutic riding program for twelve years. Prior to vet school, Dr. Leah attended Northern Michigan University for undergraduate studies and resided in the Marquette, MI area for several years before moving down state for veterinary school.

Dr. Leah and her husband, Larry, who is a commercial truck driver, have been married since 2014. They currently reside on 196 acres in Trenary, MI with their beautiful, fiery red headed, twin daughters, Alice and Marie who were born January 2023. In her spare time, Leah enjoys cross country skiing, snow shoeing, crocheting, sewing, trail horseback riding, fishing, and kayaking.

Dr. Leah and Larry have a slew of critters large and small at home. Sky, โ€˜The Old Manโ€™, is a 27 year old palomino Quarter Horse gelding, who Dr. Leah has had for 25 years and affectionately refers to as her โ€˜heart horseโ€™. The pair has had many adventures, including but not limited to: showing western, english, dressage, show jumping, speed events, and saddleseat. They have ridden shore-to-shore with the Michigan Trail Riders Association and thousands of additional miles on other trails. Dr. Leahโ€™s second horse, Wrangler, is a 4 year old bay Quarter Horse gelding that was purchased as a yearling in hopes to have him be the next โ€˜Old Manโ€™ of the crew. Dr. Leahโ€™s third horse, Dolly, is a 22 year old chestnut Quarter Horse mare who was adopted from UPAWS as a pasture mate for Sky. She spends her days soaking up the sun and keeping the boys in line.

Dr. Leah has two female dogs, Edritza (Eddie, black) and Sitznitza (Suzie, white) who are 1.5 year old Karakachan littermates and are both genetic carriers for a blood clotting disorder (which is how Dr. Leah was lucky enough to have them). Their job is to be the best โ€˜North American Snow Floofsโ€™ they can be and to chase the flying squirrels from tree to tree.

To complete their crew, Leah and Larry have three cats. Sylvia Jean, a 12 year old female spayed Siamese whose job is to be (what Dr. Leah calls) a โ€œlead balloonโ€ because she can weigh a blanket down like an anvil. Opossum (male lilac point Siamese) and Squirrel (female Domestic Shorthair gray tabby) are 5.5 year old littermates that came home with Dr. Leah from a clinical rotation when she was in vet school. They are named such because they were found on the side of a dirt road and were almost roadkill. Opossum is the โ€˜Walmart Greeterโ€™ in their house and he loves belly rubs, while Squirrel will catch any mouse unfortunate enough to cross her path.

Dr. Leah is passionate about caring for cats and dogs, as well as our large animal companions. She has a special interest in dentistry and she assists in teaching equine dentistry twice a year at Midwest Equine Dental Academy in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Dr. Leah is Fear Free certified in small animals and horses, and prides herself on using these practices to make her veterinary patients have more enjoyable visits.

Dr. Leah is beyond excited to meet you and your furry friends! Should you be interested in scheduling an appointment with her, please call the office at 906-474-6673.

Happy January!
For pets that stay outdoors, here are some tips on caring for them
If your pet is outside during cold weather:
Remember that staying warm requires extra calories. Outdoor animals typically need more calories in the winter, so feed them accordingly when the temperature drops. Talk to your veterinarian for advice on proper diet.
Watch your petโ€™s outside fresh-water bowl. If it is not heated, you may need to refresh it more often as it freezes in cold weather.
