Does My Horse Need a Blanket?

The short answer is probably not.

But with all things horses, it depends.

The horse's ancestor survived the ice age in most places, without human intervention, but evolution and domestication have made some horses less cold-resistant.

In humans, our "thermal comfort zone" is quite small. A horse's comfort zone is about 15-60 degrees Fahrenheit.

When it gets cold, your horse's body will naturally

🐎 begin to shiver (producing heat via muscle contractions)
🐎 the hair on his back will stand up, trapping air and creating the effect of a down jacket
🐎 their blood vessels will constrict at the extremities
🐎 their coat thickens
🐎 they even distribute their fatty tissue differently to facilitate insulation

In fact, blanketing a horse who has a healthy coat may actually make him COLDER because you're flattening down the fur and now allowing it to trap air inside.

However, I will blanket a horse if they meet any of these criteria:

🐎 the horse is very young or very old
🐎 the horse's Winter coat isn't as thick as I would like it to be
🐎 the horse's Winter coat isn't as shiny as I would like it to be (a shiny coat has oils that allow rain and snow to run off the fur, however a dull coat may allow the rain to reach the skin which can chill a horse)
🐎 the horse isn't as fat as I would like them to be (I don't want them wasting calories shivering)
🐎 their clipped for riding

Midnight isn’t in any pain, the sedative just hit a little too good 😂 He put his legs out to relieve himself and then decided he was perfectly comfortable just standing like that!

Check out this drastic change made from a backwards shoe. V***n had a tendon injury when she was younger and as a result she will stand and walk on her heel bulbs on her right hind leg. I applied a horseshoe to her foot backwards to extend the base of support behind her heels, she can now stand and walk with her foot in a natural position.

Managed to find the only dry ground in north Idaho to work on today! Don’t forget to be vigilant in picking your horses hooves with all this mud we’ve been getting
