Just a reminder
Black Saddle Farrier Services is open on Saturdays for haul ins. This year, with more of a regular schedule at work, I will be able to schedule follow up appointments as well. For those that are interested this may cause Saturdays to fill up early this year.

Also, there is a limited opportunity for me to come to you on my way home from work during the Weekdays. For now this will be limited to the area between Spokane and Rathdrum. Appointment times during the week will need to be flexible as I get off at different times in the evening.

Look forward to seeing you

The first part of my farrier career, I would run into people that wanted to learn how to shoe horses. Maybe it doesn’t happen as much because it looks remarkably similar to hard work.

My best advice to them was to ride and work with as many horses as they could, before trying to become a farrier. I felt the more you could expand on horsemanship and experience. By dealing with all facets of horses and learning from other horsemen. Not only would a person be able to relate to the owners, but the safer one could be in a dangerous industry.

The means of trimming and shoeing horses I have felt is very mechanical, each type of hoof gets approached in a certain way according to each horse. A farrier school gives you enough experience to apprentice under an established farrier. Allowing you to be helpful, as they cannot stop what they are doing on each horse to teach everything along the way.

I had 8 years of working with horses and other horsemen in a working (ex. Ranching, Feedlots, Roping) environment. Before I started to work under a horse. Its an opportunity I feel was invaluable to a career as a professional farrier. And should continue to grow throughout a farrier’s career as you meet new people.

It’s a career like many that are short on professionals and also unique in my opinion because the long term success of farrier depends on horsemanship skills, people skills, business skills, farrier skills, and personal attributes.

This is just a glimpse of my journey, but hopefully maybe gets someone else interested possibly in the career field.
