I was in a meeting yesterday speaking to someone from the Ag marketing community. We were talking about how the littlest thing can make a difference. Social media has now come to the forefront of where people get their info and food and farming has become polarizing.
Farmers and most Ag organizations (not corporations) have not changed their stance and continue to be transparent and as helpful as they can when presenting the benefits and advances in agriculture. In ag advocacy, all media platforms need to be saturated with people pushing the envelope of advocacy. Often what is heard though when someone tries to fill that gap is… “We have a person doing that” or “We think we are doing a great job! We don’t see a need to do anymore.”
The latter should immediately be met with an eye roll. Winning someone over to be a supporter of Ag is always a win. I dont care how many followers you have or don’t, ADVOCATE.
One Facebook/Instagram comment can win someone over or turn them against the industry.

The comment below is a prime example. This was actually posted on the Indiana Lt Governor’s page. Her response got more favorable responses than his post. The Lt. Governor here literally oversees The Indiana Department of Agriculture. He comments to people on the page, but didn’t say anything to this “health influencer” (ie NOT a farmer, agronomist, soil scientist, etc.)
I was really disappointed because he has access to the Indiana Dept of Agriculture and all the amazing people working there that could have given him a very thoughtful and factual response.
My hope is he got busy and didn’t have time to respond. This was brought to my attention by a good number of people and I agree the lack of response and allowing his platform to be used for such nonesense is as I said, disappointing. A real missed opportunity to advocate and if it changed even one person’s mind it would have been worth.

Genetically Engineered crops being drenched in carcinogenic pesticides? I have GE tomatoes growing right now and they have been sprayed by absolutely nothing other than calcium, both sprayed and fertigated. Drenching your crops in anything would cost a lot of $$$. No one is doing that. As far as the mutagenic pesticides? There was only one that really worried me. It was rotenone, which thankfully is now banned in the US because there was scientific evidence that is caused Parkinson’s and would attack human mitochondria. Oh yeah… It is 100 percent Organic too.
