When horses sustain a soft tissue injury, the first point of call has often been to use box rest. But is this the best option when managing a tendinopathy? ⁣

A tendinopathy is an overuse injury of the tendon. While there is still much we don’t know about managing them, there are a few things that human research tells us. ⁣

1) Tendinopathy doesn’t improve with rest. Pain may settle but typically returns once activity resumes.

2) Exercise is currently the most evidence based treatment for tendinopathy in humans. Tendons need to be loaded progressively so that they can develop greater tolerance to the loads that are placed on them. In humans we see that the vast majority of cases tendinopathy will not improve without this vital load stimulus. Is this why there is a low success rate in horses?⁣

3) Modifying load is important in settling tendon pain. This often involves reducing (at least in the short-term) loads that involves energy storage and compression. In a horse this involves activities like higher speed, jumping, repeated transitions.⁣

4) Tendinopathy rarely improves long term with only passive treatments such as massage, therapeutic ultrasound, injections, shock-wave therapy, laser etc. Exercise and load management are the key factors and passive treatments are adjuncts to help manage pain. ⁣

5) Exercise needs to be individualised. There is no recipe and exercise should be prescribed based on factors such as horse age, discipline, and owner’s goals and expectations. ⁣

6) Tendinopathy doesn’t resolve in a hurry. You need to have patience, ensure that exercise is correct and progressed appropriately, and try and resist the common temptation to accept ‘short cuts’.

EQ Active has a library of over 200 exercises to help in your prescription of rehab programs for tendinopathy. Give it a try free for 30 days or take advantage of our extended trial promotion.

SITTING TROT (Quick tip)

To practice your sitting trot: STAND UP! Yes that’s right! Standing up in the stirrups while trotting is one of the first steps to real balance.

It’s done in all the European military schools (e.g. Spanish School of Riding). Not jumping position leaning over, but STRAIGHT UP.

Are you wobbling around up there? When you learn to absorb through your joints - hip, knee and ankle joints, up there standing in trot, then your sitting trot stands a chance of being good too.

If you can’t stand with a tiny gap between your p***c bone and the saddle standing fully, your stirrups are too long to help your balance. And, your heels will be up. If the gap is Huge when you stand, your stirrups are too short.

Good luck with this exercise!

Did you know? Who has a horse with one of these thumbprints?

A "Prophet's Thumbprint" is a birthmark in the form of an indentation, usually found on the side of a horse’s neck, and it is totally harmless although it comes with a lovely legendary story!

The Prophet Mohammed was wandering the desert with his herd of horses for many days, and as they approached an oasis he sent them forth to drink. But as the thirsty horses approached the water, he called them back. Only five of his mares stopped and returned to him, and to thank them for their loyalty he blessed them by pressing his thumbprint into their necks.
It’s believed that a horse with such a mark will be outstanding, being a descendant of one of these brood mares that the Prophet Mohammed particularly treasured.

So thankful I'm not in the boarding business anymore 😬 🤑😵‍💫

So thankful I'm not in the boarding business anymore 😬 🤑😵‍💫

“$61.99”

“How much for the Amplify? Not $61.99 A BAG, right?”

“62, yeah. Before delivery and the fuel surcharge.”

This is an actual conversation Em (if you don’t know who that is, she’s my head girl, right hand, the reason your horse gets 5* care here at the farm) and I had this morning. A grim reminder that while horse prices are higher than Snoop Dogg at the Super Bowl, we horse owners are in for a major crash and burn when it comes to the care and upkeep on said horses.

If you’re a regular middle classer and keep your horse at home, you’re already keenly aware; and if you boarded your horse previously you now understand why he wasn’t bedded knee deep and standing in front of 20lbs of alfalfa like he was the 2nd coming of Storm Cat. Champagne taste, beer budget, am I right? Yeah, same here.

If you currently board your horse somewhere, I beg you to read all the foreboding posts about prices going up and being kind to your barn owners. We have been quietly absorbing the price increases in every aspect of horse care and I’m about to lay some hard truths on ya’ll, so buckle up lol.

Grain prices go up WEEKLY. Yes, that’s not an exaggeration here in the NY/CT area. Since January the grain we feed has increased 11-15% depending on the brand and type. Hay went up 13% from the last load we had delivered, and I’m guessing this year’s first cut is going to be easily 33% more than last year. EASILY. Maybe more, I’m trying to be conservative in a market that’s anything but. Shavings, same thing- 16%, and who knows what this next load will be.

Dumpster, that’s gone up. Also the mowers, Kubota, truck and tractor don’t run off love. $7 a gallon anyone?

And lest we forget lumber- those fence boards and posts your angel muffin EATS? Boards- they’re about $16 each, posts are running $32. EACH, PEOPLE! Your sweet Pon Pon, who crashes through gates- yeah those are roughly $250 each at TSC. None of this is including the time and labor of a hungry and disgruntled boyfriend who is fixing the broken fencing at 8:30 at night after a full day of work.

I can tell you here at Stoneleigh we have implemented minor changes to absorb the cost for our boarder where we can. I know every horse owner loves to look in their stall and see copious amounts of hay. You know what you don’t see? How much gets churned into the bedding and s**t and pi**ed on. Trust me, it’s a lot. Same for the paddocks; spend a Sunday here when the big machines come out to strip the fronts of the muck. The waste is sinful. Look, my personal horses are the biggest diva as****es- so now they get a flake at a time. You finish your flake, you get another. Finish that? Boom! Another! But I’m not wasting hay. Also, we use hay nets when applicable, so the hay stays clean and available longer. Please don’t fret if you don’t see hay out in front of them 24/7, and look, with money all things are possible, so if you just can’t stand the thought, then we’re happy to accommodate the visual you need.

If your horse blows through a gate or beavers my boards down to spindles, you’re going to get a bill for it. It’s not personal, it’s horses.

One of my coaches sent an email that her boarding and training prices were increasing-20% to cover costs. It’s an accurate number. Presently. I wouldn’t be shocked if it goes up again if inflation doesn’t shake out. But it was something else she said that resonated with me as well- that her boarding business needed to cover itself and not be supplemented by her lessons and clinic fees. Oh man. Light bulb moment for sure.

I don’t think most boarders understand that- for me personally my lessons and schooling fees go right back into the farm account- I essentially make NO SALARY. I’m clearly not the only pro doing this, and while I’m not complaining, (it’s my farm and I think that’s fair for now) it’s something to think about.

In the coming months you’ll see price changes happening at all levels of the boarding industry- maybe some will do a tiered pricing structure, a la carte services, surcharges or just a general percentage price increase, but it’s coming.

Satire aside, rest assured Em and I will do our best to keep board as affordable as possible without sacrificing the 5* care you’ve come to expect here. We’re not asking for hugs or accolades, just a momentary pause to remember as crazy horse owners, we’re all in this together.

(Horse in photo says he’s not responsible, but ain’t no snitch either 🤣)

Horses sleep in three different positions: standing, semi-recumbent, and fully recumbent.

Each of these positions allow the horse to reach different levels of sleep.

1. Standing, which is the safest position for a prey animal, offers the lightest level of sleep.

This allows the horse to wake and run away quickly if in danger.

2. Semi-recumbent, as shown in the picture, is where the horse lays down, but with their legs underneath them.

This allows for a deeper sleep than standing, but their legs are still underneath them for a quick stand up and run away.

3. Fully recumbent is where a horse is laid flat out on their sides. This is the only position in which a horse can get to REM sleep - deep, restful sleep.

However due to the horse's body size, they can only lay fully out for 45 minutes a time or risk crushing internal organs.

In total, horses need anywhere from 30 min to 3 hours of REM sleep a day.

What happens if a horse doesn't get enough sleep? In the next post we'll go over common symptoms of a sleep-deprived horse.

What did you learn from your last bad ride?
04/29/2022

What did you learn from your last bad ride?

Rides that we perceive as bad can make us feel hopeless and untalented.

They wreak havoc on our ego, because they show us that we are not nearly as advanced as we had imagined on our good days. They are reality checks that impress on us that we still have so much farther to go and so much more to learn.

For many years I really struggled and suffered when bad rides “happened to me” - until I realised that these bad rides were actually more valuable than the good ones in some ways because they were the ones that propelled me forward.

Often the value of a “bad” ride lies not so much in what I learn DURING that particular ride, but in what the analytical process teaches me that follows the bad ride.

These rides make us feel like failures for not being able to do something that we think we should be able to do. They bring us face to face with our inadequacies. They show us where we are too imprecise, too sloppy, too uncoordinated, to rough, too clumsy, too hasty, too late, you name it. The horse essentially lets us know us that what we thought was acceptable is not only NOT acceptable, it is actually quite poor...
