Brilliant management solution for this with counter surfing dogs

Management is something every trainer I know talks about - it’s one of the first conversations I have with clients. Baby gates, x-pens, leash tethers, the list goes on…

I’ve always thought I was good at finding adaptive solutions but today I walked into a lesson and was blown away by the genius of my client! Their dog is a big boy who loves to counter surf, but also struggles with being confined.

Look at this beautiful AND creative solution they came up with! This is a portable ping pong net 🤯 I am so in love with this and was so impressed with their ingenious idea.

You can find them on Amazon - get one while you can because I think this is gonna be a new trend 😂

The dog world has lost someone special. All Dog’s is the the only place I recommend for boarding and her influence is apparent in the way it is run.

Dear All Dogs Family,

Early this morning, our fearless leader, teacher, mentor, and friend, Gail Fisher passed away after a six year battle with ovarian cancer.

All Dogs Gym has benefited from Gail’s innovative spirit, guidance, and love for decades. It would not be the exceptional place it is without her leadership.

Gail’s mission was education. Not just to educate dogs, but to educate their families, our staff, and the general public with her books and newspaper column.
By doing this, she helped to build stronger relationships between dogs and their families.

Gail spent just as much time educating her staff on the behavior of dogs. She was always ready to pull up a quick Power Point or share engaging stories and anecdotes from her experiences throughout her lifetime.

As we navigate this new normal, we will rely heavily on all we have learned from Gail. She was a legend and we were all the lucky ones to be along for the ride. We can still hear Gail in the background “of course this can be done! Nothing is impossible! Click THEN treat!”

All Dogs Gym will remain what we have always known it to be - a home! A home for our staff, the dogs in our care and their owners, we are family.

Gail…. We hold an enormous amount of gratitude for the lessons, the love and the confidence you have instilled in us to make a difference in the lives of dogs and their loved ones.
Thank you for all of these gifts.
We love you.

If it is too hot or rainy or something else, you can keep your dog busy and give them an outlet for their energy by putting some treats in an empty toilet paper roll and folding it so the dog has to work to get the treats out. 🧻 🐕

Work challenges popular idea that breeds have specific, reliable behaviors

Super interesting article about personality and breeds that includes a few quote from some dog experts I know well.

Breed doesn’t have that big an effect on a dog’s personality.

Bark magazine has a great article on the benefit of not labeling a dog’s breed–or more likely, it’s supposed breed, on its cage in a shelter. A Shelter Dog’s Fate Can Rest on What Breed He is Labeled describes how breed labels are first, often wrong, and second, influence buyers of all dogs,...

It is worth taking the time to get your dog used to having its nails cut or filed.

Sometimes ignoring an unwanted behavior is the best bet.😄

Yup. I am a proud owner of a dog who can be like this.

Had him since he was 8 weeks old. He’s been to classes from day one; he lives with 8 other dogs, he goes to NMBDT weekly and play dates constantly. He has daily training, management, reinforcement….. but today …… he was an absolute as***le.

Every dog that walked by him he barked at. He pulled me on leash cos I stupidly left his harness at home. He didn’t give a F about the treats I had for him, so I stopped and got some higher value ones, yeah…. better but still no. Even my verbal praise did nothing, neither did my whisper swearing at him through gritted teeth that when we got home I was going to kill him.

Have I failed? NOPE. Is this normal? YUP.

He’s coming up on 9 months old. The testosterone, independence, new stuff/dogs/people is going to kill us all hysteria and F U period is hitting and hitting strong and some days now will be absolutely awful and some will be a dream.

This doesn’t mean I stop training, or go to harsher methods, or give up or think there’s something wrong with me/him/life. It means I need to pick my battles carefully and stay consistent, while also making sure I give him a break from stuff - even if it’s stuff he WAS doing great at - like walking past other dogs.

I’m sharing this so you all know dog trainers have AWESOME dogs sometimes, but we still have dogs who can be complete as***les sometimes too. Any trainer who doesn’t admit that isn’t telling the whole truth.

It’s normal everyone. IT’S NORMAL. I hate him right now but it’s still normal. Tomorrow will be better… and if it isn’t there’s always wine.

Yup. If my dog makes a mistake, He should make it 100%.

I am training the newest Wagline dog to compete in agility. These are the first two sessions where she starts to do a sequence of jumps and then in the comments you can see her doing jumps and a tunnel together.
