We moved to the Reagan, Texas in 2001 when I was accepted to Texas A&M University in College Station. I started working on my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and collecting animals for our miniature farm. It was the first time we owned land and we had heard we could get an agricultural exemption on our property taxes if we raised livestock or had farm animals such as cattle, chickens and goats.

Over the years, we raised or rescued all types of animals including goats, chickens, a llama, rabbits, horses, fish, dogs, cats, parrots, a monkey, mice, iguana, bearded dragons, miniature cattle and I’m sure countless other animals I have forgotten to mention.

Most of the animals or livestock that I acquired were purchased as gifts for me (at my request) from my husband. I had many Valentine, anniversary, birthday and Christmas gifts in the form of goats, horses, and cattle (including my miniature American Aberdeen Angus & American Herefords.)

One evening we were dining with several friends and one of the ladies started showing off her new gift from her husband. It was a large diamond ring- several carats. It was a beautiful ring and I leaned over and asked my husband jokingly, “Why don’t you ever buy me diamonds like that?” He instantly replied with a smile on his face, “Honey, your diamonds are in the pasture!”
