How to Train your Pyrdoodle

Because a Pyrdoodle is a cross between low energy and a high energy Breeds, they can vary from pup to pup depending on what traits they inherit.
Socialization is key from the very beginning. Do not train to a harness. It teaches them to pull against the leash. Always start with a slip leash and teach them to give to pressure by gently tugging on the leash until they take a step and then quickly release and praise. You can use a small piece of chicken in your closed fist to encourage but do not let them jump and grab at it. Once they get the hang of it they learn quickly from there. Take them everywhere! Let people pet them, but don’t let them get overly excited and jump.
Teach them to sit to be petted. Just this goes a long ways for a happy well adjusted dog. They learn to not panic in strange situations, learn to be sociable without being obnoxious and are easy to take places. Any advanced training after that will be easy to teach with consistency.

This is Karuk. He is 16
Months old now. His new hairdo! Before and after! I love the long look, but those adorable expressive eyes needed to be seen. Pyrdoodles are smart but sensitive, require a firm but soft and patient hand and lots of human attention! Your pyrdoodle will love you! It will be your best friend, be goofy and lovable, but yet protect you from anything!

I love the long look. Pyrdoodles that are true 50% Pyrenees have the best coat for long or short. They have the perfect mix of long hair and soft cotton undercoat. Different pups will have less or more of the soft coat depending on the Pyrenees coat quality. A true quality Pyrenees has a large fluffy thick coat, however, if groomed regularly it is easy to maintain. So a Pyrdoodle bred from a quality Pyrenees will have a thick undercoat as well but it easily combs out. Don’t be afraid to keep that coat it’s adorable but also because of this soft undercoat they can be groomed into cute teddy bear clips too! This guy is going through his puppy to adult transition and it requires a little bit more time but still quite easy. A few minutes of line combing them bristle brushing is all you need once a day :)

This is Karuk. He is a 50/50 bred pyrdoodle from AKC Champion parents. He is a brindle, 14 months old and is 110 lbs 🙂 I’ve seen a lot of crosses with these guys, golden pyrdoodles, pyrdoodle and bernadoodle, and the F1b etc breeding back to poodle. I’m convinced that the 50/50 breeding that produces the perfect mix of both breeds and pups coming from DNAd healthy and good representatives of the breed both in conformation and temperament are the best. This litter many of the pups have gone to become service dogs and training is going great.

I was asked a question about bones and things good for teeth cleaning. As a vet tech and second generation show breeder I can tell you the things I’ve seen that work the best and the things I’ve seen go wrong. Never feed any bones that have been cooked as they splinter when chewed on. Never feed rib bones because they can get wedged between the teeth sideways and really get seriously stuck. All small bones can be dangerous because some dogs just swallow them and then they create an intestinal blockage. And that’s fatal if not treated immediately. I’ve seen dogs having to be sedated because they panic and are clawing their mouth and tearing their tongue bloody from a rib bone stuck against the roof of their mouth. Buy large knuckle bones, the large leg joint of the cow. They can chew on those for days and not only does it scrape their teeth good, but it also is very nutritious as they get the cartilage and often some of the marrow but it doesn’t splinter into small pieces. I keep fresh water in the house as well as outside but the water in the house has an additive that nutrilizes the tarter when they drink it. It is safe and natural. I also never feed pig ears or real leather chews. If you watch a dog chew them, they get real soft and pliable and sticky. Often then they swallow it. These are common causes of intestinal blockages as well and usually require surgery to cure the issue. There are a lot of good chewies not made of leather or are made from chopped leather and formed together that are safe. And my dogs all love good old fashioned milk bone dog biscuits :)

Karuk at his vet appt. Just turned 5 months old and is 60 lbs. His parents are both exceptional but he is amazing. As I’ve said before, socialization is the key with this breed. He has been going at least twice a month and often more since he was 7 weeks old to the vets, Walmart, tractor supply, the park and wherever else possible. He is calm and friendly and happy. Teaching the heal, stop and sit, wait and the word GO is so important. Wait is for not doing anything until told to do it. Go means if they are in the way or not where they are supposed to be, you point where you want them to go and say ”GO”. Then make them go there. Start on leash and direct them. Eventually they learn to go the direction you point. This works for simple things like carrying in groceries and they are under foot but can save a life if they are headed towards a street you can point to the house and say GO! It’s a very important part of a dog human relationship just as you have with your kids. When mom says Move, it’s important so you move! Last picture is him falling asleep in the ride home :)

I often get asked about diet. Here are some tips. Pyrenees are often picky eaters. And all big breed dogs are prone to bloat, diabetes when they get older and heart disease. Feeding foods that are heart healthy, low cholesterol and naturally healthy proteins and fats will lead to a longer healthier life and help prevent big dog old age diseases such as hip issues, diabetes and heart disease. A common reason for big dogs to go off their feed is because they are being fed dry kibble. They eat the dry food then drink water and their stomach bloats up. If the food has soy or corn it swells even more. My Pyrenees is a super picky eater but he almost always eats this diet and at 6 yrs old his recent exam and lab work is perfect including his protein levels and cholesterol. I feed Canidae brand dry kibble chicken and lamb mix. It is a little lower in fat which is good, has low cholesterol properties and no corn wheat or soy. I mix their kibble in warm goats milk until softened. All big breed dogs, but Pyrenees and standard poodles specifically are prone to bloat. By soaking the dry food it prevents the chance of bloat. I add one egg for 4 dogs and 1/4 cup per dog of a meat mixture which is 1/2 ground turkey meat and 1/2 ground beef heart. I cut back their recommended amount of dry kibble by 1/2 cup each. Mix this all together and let sit covered until the kibble is about half way softened and stir again to mix well. The turkey is an easily digested protein and a healthy fat and the beef heart is very low fat and has a lot of natural taurine for heart health. If you can’t find fresh goats milk you can buy powdered goats milk at the feed store made for baby goats that are bottle fed. Make sure and buy the one made of milk proteins and coconut oil because it is also heart healthy. I buy fresh and mix it with the powdered. All of my dogs do great on this diet and my puppies grow up big and healthy. Here is my crew. “Karuk “ my pyrdoodle puppy is the brindle, the pure white with mask is my 1 yr old female Pyrenees/ Anatolian “Ederra”, the poodle is the mom to the pyrdoodle and the Pyrenees is dad to both pups. Happy healthy dogs :)

Here are some tips for all of you pyrdoodle, Pyrenees and poodle owners that have giant land mines in your yard! They love to dig! But we have found a solution. At least for me this works great. Build them a sand box. Mine is 8 x 8 square made out of 2 x 12s. We dug out an area about 3 ft deep in a slight incline so it drains when it rains. We filled it with loam and sand. We often bury new toys in there or even their favorite toys when they are in the house and not watching. We encourage play time which includes digging in the sand box. When they try to dig in other places they get put on a leash made to sit and watch as we fill it in and are told this is a Nono! Then the leash comes off and we run to the sand box to look for new toys 🙂 they love this. Also mine happens to be under a big oak tree so it is shaded in summer and so we hung a big thick rope from a branch there. They love to grab the rope and swing it and play tug of war with the tree. It gives them lots of outlet for digging and chewing when outside. We never find digging outside of the sandbox any more.

So you think you want a Pyrdoodle. Doing research on the breed itself is your first step. Second step, study both the Pyrenees and the standard poodle breeds, conformation, temperament and instincts. Look at pictures of show dogs and go to breeders web sites so you can learn to recognize what a quality purebred looks like. Then when you are ready ask to see pictures of the parents, ask about temperament and health testing. Take your time and don’t be color blind. Just because they are a more desirable color doesn’t mean they are what you want. We had a very colorful litter last year. 10 babies. We had whites and bi colors and brindles too. Look at the pictures to see how my friend and I evaluated them and chose for train ability and temperament.

This is my pup Karuk. He was my pick from a litter of ten. This guy is amazing. Last vet visit at 4 months he was 50 lbs 🙂 If you are looking for a puppy, let’s talk about what to look for in the parents before choosing. Well bred dogs make the best offspring. This boys dad is an AKC Champion bred Great Pyrenees and his mom is a King poodle, or Royal poodle, over 70 lbs that comes from a show line that is bred as service dogs. That’s what his litter was produced for.

Hi guys! You can all participate in this fun and informative page to add your experiences, ask for advice and help each other to learn how to have a great experience with your dog. Remember all dog breeds are born with their own particular set of personalities and instincts. It is our job to teach them how to use the way they think to learn how to fit into our life and the lifestyle we chose for them. No question is a dumb question. One rule though, no bullying or ridiculing. We all have some experience to share, including the mistakes. This is a safe page to ask whatever questions you need to to learn how to avoid those mistakes. My posts will often be detailed so bear with me, but I have been doing this my whole life so have a lot to share. This is not a breeder page! No posts for selling puppies. Sorry
