🐥In today’s edition of the Poultry Profiles, we will be exploring a dual-purpose American breed known as the Wyandotte. 🐥

The Wyandotte chicken is an all-American breed that originated in New York. The breed was named after a Native American tribe. However, it is unknown whether this breed was truly associated with the tribe or not. Today, the Wyandotte is a very popular breed of chicken to raise, and for good reason.

Wyandotte chickens are dependable egg layers, producing an average of 200-250 large brown eggs per year. This breed is healthy, robust, and exceptionally cold hardy, continuing to lay eggs even during the chill of winter. Thanks to their small comb, they are not prone to developing frostbite.

Wyandotte hens weigh around 6-7 pounds with roosters reaching 8-9 pounds. They have a rose comb and thick, soft, fluffy feathers that come in a lovely variety of colors and patterns. Some colors that you can find this breed in include, gold laced, silver laced, blue laced red, splash laced red, lavender, black, blue, silver penciled, partridge, and Columbian, just to name a few.

Wyandottes are quiet, intelligent, gentle, sweet-tempered, and tend to be very people oriented. Due to their hardiness and their pleasant personalities, they make a fantastic breed for children and beginners. It is not unusual for this breed to go broody and when they do, they have been known to make great mothers to their chicks.

Wyandotte chickens are not prone to any major health issues. They can tolerate both the heat and the cold and can live between 6-12 years with proper care.

🐥In today’s edition of our Poultry Profiles, we will be taking a look at the breed that holds the world record for the most eggs laid in one year: the Black Australorp. 🐥

The Black Australorp is a hardy, dual purpose breed that originated in Australia. Orpington chickens were used to create the breed, and they are sometimes referred to as the “Australian Orpington”. Another famous breed that helped create the Australorp is Rhode Island Reds, which were added to enhance egg laying abilities.

Black Australorps are excellent egg layers, producing an average of 260-300 eggs per year. Their eggs are large and brown, and hens tend to lay well even in the heat of summer or the cold of winter. It is a Black Australorp hen that holds the world record for the greatest number of eggs laid one year, allegedly producing one egg every day for 364 days straight. Hens usually weigh around 6-7 pounds with roosters reaching 8-10 pounds, making them a robust, dual-purpose bird that can also be used for meat.

As the name suggests, Black Australorps have glossy black feathers. Their feathers shine in the sunlight, revealing hues of green and sometimes purple. They are very soft to the touch, and have a large, single red comb. This breed can be found in different color varieties, such as blue and splash.

Not only are Australorps tremendous egg layers but this versatile breed also makes a wonderful pet. This breed is known to be laid-back, quiet, sociable, intelligent, and very gentle. Their sweet nature makes them a fantastic breed for beginners and children. Australorp hens sometimes go broody and tend to make nurturing and devoted mothers if allowed to hatch eggs.

In general, Australorps are a hardy and healthy breed. They are not prone to any major health issues and with proper care can thrive in both warm and cold climates. This easy-going breed can live for 6-10 years on average, providing their owners with plenty of eggs and happiness along the way.

🐣In today’s Poultry Profile we will be exploring a flashy and charismatic breed called the Speckled Sussex. 🐥

As the name would suggest, Speckled Sussex originated in Sussex, England. Many different breeds are believed to have helped create the Speckled Sussex, including the Sussex, Dorkings, and possibly Cochins and Malays. The mix created a bird that is extremely hardy, dual purpose, adaptable, and bold.

Speckled Sussex hens are robust egg layers, producing around 200-250 light brown eggs per year. Hens can sometimes go broody and usually make attentive mothers if allowed to hatch eggs. This resilient breed can thrive in both hot and cold climates and is not prone to any major health concerns. On average, you can expect this breed to live for 5-9 years.

The Speckled Sussex has brown feathers with sheens of green and striking white speckles. Each season when the Speckled Sussex molts, they will often develop more speckles of white across their body, creating a gorgeous contrast. This breed has a single red comb and clean legs. Hens can reach 6-7 pounds with roosters often tipping the scales at 8-9 pounds.

The Speckled Sussex is adored not only for its hardiness and consistent egg laying capabilities, but also because of their charming personalities. This breed tends to be extremely friendly, outgoing, intelligent, gentle, and curious, making them a joy to be around. 🐣In today’s Poultry Profile we will be taking a look at the Plymouth Barred Rock! 🐣

The Barred Rock originated in New England in the early 19th century. The breed was created by crossing the Dominique chicken with Black Javas and it didn’t take long until the newly developed breed became a top choice for farmers. In fact, by the early 20th century the Barred Rock had earned the affectionate nickname of “America’s favorite breed”.

To this day, the Barred Rock is still an extremely popular breed of chicken, and for good reason. Barred Rocks are dual purpose, meaning they can be raised for both their eggs and their meat. This heritage breed is quite hardy and handles both hot weather and cold weather very well. A dependable layer, Barred Rocks will provide their owners with an average of 250 large brown eggs per year.

As the name suggests, Barred Rocks have barred feathers that are black and white. They have a single comb and clean feet. Hens can weigh around 7-8lbs. and roosters can reach 9-10lbs. This breed is known to be highly intelligent and is typically calm, personable, adaptable, and curious. They tend to be very people-oriented, making them not only a great breed to raise for eggs, but a great pet as well.

On average, Barred Rocks can live for 6-8 years.

🐴Today is National Arabian Horse Day so we will be honoring the breed with some fun facts below. 👇🏻

The Arabian horse is one of the oldest breeds of horse in the world and has contributed to the creation of most modern, light riding breeds. Originating in the Middle East, the Arabian horse has historically been prized for its speed, loyalty, courage in battle, and unparalleled stamina. It has been said that prized Arabian war horses would often sleep alongside their owners inside of tents to prevent them from being stolen. Generations of Arabian horses living so closely with people is what likely attributed to the breeds affinity for human connection.

Arabian horses are typically gray, chestnut, black, bay, and sometimes roan. This compact and athletic breed has an average height of around 14.1-15.1 hands and usually weighs between 800-1,000 pounds. While most horse breeds have 24 vertebrae, Arabian horses only have 23. They carry their tails high and have small, dished heads with large, expressive eyes and wide nostrils. This breed has been known to live between 25-30 years, but with very few health issues, it is not unheard of for them to make it into their early to mid-thirties.

Today the Arabian horse can be found competing in both English and Western competitions, racing, serving as a simple pleasure horse, or competing in endurance riding where they tend to excel thanks to their superlative stamina. The Arabian horse is known to be highly intelligent, bold, inquisitive, people-oriented, and sometimes sensitive. With proper training and leadership, an Arabian horse can bond very deeply with its rider, making it a willing, loyal, and dependable steed.

Please share pictures of your favorite Arabian horse in the comments below. We'd love to see them! 🐎

🐣In today's Poultry Profile we will be exploring the Orpington. All of our Mill locations will be getting at least one color of Orpington in this chick season, so it’s time to get excited about this awesome breed! 🐥

Orpington chickens originated in Great Britain during the 1800s. They were developed by coachman, William Cook, who lived in Orpington, Kent, thus giving the breed their name. It is said that Cook used Black Plymoth Rocks and Minorcas to create the Orpington. Today, this popular chicken comes in a variety of different colors. While buff is the most common color seen today, Orpingtons can also be red, lavender, black, chocolate, silver laced, chocolate gold laced, and jubilee, just to name a few. Orpingtons have thick, fluffy feathers and can weigh around 8lbs. for hens or 10lbs. for roosters.

It is hard to go wrong by adding Orpingtons to your flock. A wonderful beginner breed, they tend to be docile, quiet, sweet, gentle, and human-oriented. Along with their pleasant personalities, they are also both heat and cold-hardy, generally healthy, and can be reliable egg layers. Hens can lay around 150-200 eggs per year. Their eggs are typically large and are light brown in color. It is common for hens of this breed to go broody and if allowed to hatch eggs they tend to make excellent mothers.

Orpingtons live for 5-8 years on average and are not prone to many health issues. Since Orpingtons are so mellow it is best not to house them with aggressive breeds as it could lead to your Orpingtons being picked on. All in all, the Orpington makes both a wonderful pet and a dependable layer. If you are interested in adding this breed to your flock, please call your nearest Mill location to check on availability.

The Mill of Red Lion Story

Our store is one of six Mill locations spread between upper Maryland and lower Pennsylvania. Our main location, The Mill of Bel Air opened in 1886.

For over 50 years, the DE Horn Company was a long time maker of quality feed for Red Lion before it was bought and became a member of the Mill family. It opened on January 1, 2011 and many original services have remained with expansions in pet, equine, livestock, wildlife feed and supplies. The Mill of Red Lion now packages vegetable seeds for all of The Mill’s locations.
