KEEP PETS' TEETH SPARKLING TO PREVENT EARLY DEATH.

Bad breath, loose teeth, swelling in the mouth or face and inflamed gums are signs of dental disease in dogs and cats, but most pets with dental disease don't stop eating, say veterinarian Sherri Dubuc. Brushing pets' teeth prevents dental disease, and dogs and cats should have their teeth professionally cleaned every year or so to prevent infections, bone decay and other diseases.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month and local veterinarians are trying to educate owners about potential dangers.
According to the American Medical Veterinarian Association ( AMVA), there are certain signs in a pet's health that point to a dental problem.

If there's an issue it can present with bad breath, it can present with swelling in the jaw, behind the eye, or anywhere else in the mouth along with inflamed gums . Most dogs and cats will eat despite them having tremendous periodontal disease and things like that.
Cornell University reports 80 - 90 % of dogs over the the age of 3 have some component of periodontal disease. Dr. Dubuc said this is where preventative care comes into play but it depends on the breed. The smaller the dog, the toy breeds generally have genetically poor teeth, so they actually should have their teeth cleaned every year to a year and a half once they get to be about two or three years old. Larger breed dogs don't build up as much plaque. They don't get as much dental disease, and you can usually space that cleaning out three, sometimes, even four years, said Dr. Dubuc.
Dubuc said proper treatment and check ups can help keep your loved one around longer.
Having periodontal disease can lead to bone decay, infections in the jaw or the bone. It can lead to heart disease. Vegetative endocarditis can be a result of periodontal disease. It can actually shorten their lifespan if they have a bad enough infection. Dubuc said.
The AMVA said brushing your pet's teeth regularly is the best way to prevent frequent vets bills or major dental problems.
They said dogs accept brushing much easier than cats, but it's best to start them young.
Dubuc said, many local veterinarians offer special on dental care this month ( February) and owners should reach out to their preferred clinic for more information.

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone.

Since there will be lots of flowers and chocolate exchanged today, just a reminder that lilies are extremely toxic to cats and chocolate is toxic to dogs. Just a friendly reminder. Have a fun and safe Valentine's Day.
