We are the proud producers of "Kells" Morgans - 100%/High Percentage Foundation Morgans - and have been breeding for family pleasure for over 25 years.

Check out our website for breeding options and sales list. Our 50 acre farm is nestled in the bluffs of the Mississippi River valley, just outside Red Wing in southeastern Minnesota. Our hilly pastures offer good natural exercise for our Morgans and good shelter from the cold Minnesota winters. aling. How did our love affair with the Morgan begin……

I had grown up with horses – mostly grades - and as an adult purchased my own grade mare and had a couple Arabian geldings that we trained to ride and drive. Then over 40 years ago, after having seen my first Morgan stallion at a stallion service auction, I was hooked. I purchased the breeding service and bred my grade mare; the result being a c**t of definite Morgan type. Of course a half-Morgan was not enough for me and the search for a purebred followed. We purchased a couple Morgan mares and raised a couple nice foals, but having learned more about breed type and correct conformation, replaced these first mares with what would basically be our foundation mares – Pittridge Shonda and Coal Creek Onyx. Both these mares lived long and productive lives and we are fortunate to have descendants. While taking our mares to be bred at Spring Hills Farm, we just happened upon our senior stallion, Spring Hills K C L, then a two year old and had the opportunity to buy him. We hadn’t planned to own a stallion, but couldn’t resist him, and he has been the perfect stallion. Though we don’t show, KC has been used for trailriding and driving, besides breeding. KC has sired well over 100 foals and was our introduction to the “sport” bred Morgan. We breed for “sport” movement, exceptional disposition, good type and conformation. We have sold over 75 Morgans in the past 30 years and produce a couple exceptional foals each year. Upon KC’s retirement his son, Kells Above R Xpectations filled his breeding duties following in KC’s foot steps. In 1997 we purchased RC Black Tie Affair (Funquest Cafallero x Miss Prairie Queen) as a yearling and he has produced many wonderful typy foals with exceptional fun personalities. Since retiring, we no longer stand a stallion. KC and Tie have gone to greener pastures, and Jake now stands at stud in Ohio. We produce one to two foals a year now.

Congrats to Dr. Amy ZumBrunnen on selecting the yearling gelding, Kells Eoghan It All To U (Whippoorwill Aristocrat x Kells Maija Blessed Event), as her next Morgan. Dr. Amy had years ago purchased an older Morgan mare from us. We wish Dr. Amy and Eoghan (Oh-in) much future success together.

He has been handled from day 1 and loves attention. Quinn should mature to at least 15 hands. Video upon request.

This has to be one of my favorite pictures of Kells Maija Blessed Event (Spring Hills K C L x Coal Creek Onyx) ridden by our granddaughter, McKenna, whose getting some riding tips from Colin. Sadly, Maija has struggled since August with severe laminitis brought on by a bout of Potomac Horse Fever. Mayflies were the expected culprits that made her ill. Our vet’s quick treatment helped with many issues, but X-rays showed extreme laminitis that caused her constant pain. Her prognosis didn’t look good and quality of life had deteriorated. We laid Maija to rest today. Also painful, is the loss of the precious foal she carried. She was our youngest mare at 19 and the last producing mare we had by our old stallion. RIP Maija 😢.

And it’s a wrap…. Got our 3 crops of hay in and even had some to sell. Nice to be done and have a full hay barn.

Though it’s nasty hot, haying must get done. First of hopefully 4 loads baled up. I’ll be helping unload 😥 but great to get our first crop all in dry.

We welcomed another c**t early morning May 18th - a full brother to our 2021 c**t (Whippoorwill Aristocrat x Kells Maija Blessed Event). This leggy c**t is straightening up and working on filling out.

Our unnamed c**t is just over 2 weeks old and filling out nicely. Need to get decided on a name instead of just calling him “Boy”. Foal #2 is expected soon. “Boy” needs someone to play with.

Shortly before midnight we welcomed this wonderful c**t (Kells MemorialDayCasanova x Kells Onyx Pearl). High % Foundation. No name yet. His legs are kind of all over the place but he can use them. Delighted to catch the birth. Expecting another foal later in May.

Foaling season has started for a few, but soon will be in full force. Our two foals aren’t expected until May, but this is one of my favorite past photos. Nothing better than watching a mare welcome her newborn!

Hard to see him go — Kells Aristocratic Heir (Whippoorwill Aristocrat x Kells Maija Blessed Event) loaded right up early this morning for his long trip to join new owner, Janette Giles, in Winterport Maine. We thank and congratulate Janette on her acquiring this fine 2021 c**t. Sounds like his new barn name will be Sachi. Safe travels to Sachi (previously known as Angus) and I’m sure Janette is anxiously awaiting his arrival. We look forward to a full sibling in May 2022.

Our 2nd foal due late May 2022 is a repeat cross that produced our 2021 Angus c**t. Kells Maija Blessed Event is bred back to Whippoorwill Aristocrat (photo belongs to stallion owner). This will be a 100% Foundation foal.

SOLD—Kells Aristocratic Heir, aka Angus, is now just over 5 months old and we plan to wean this big black boy soon. He’s already wearing some winter Woolies. His foreleg measurement says he’ll mature close to 16 hands. Angus will be offered for sale.
